STRING THEORYIn May of 2015, the initial inspiration and creative concepts for what would become String Theory began to take shape, triggering a creative ripple effect that would manifest into a new stage show and album from the Fly My Pretties collective.

The search began to find 14 key musicians and songwriters in Aotearoa who could explore new territory for the project and begin writing tracks for what would become Fly My Pretties’ sixth album, String Theory.

The early demos of the songs were presented in a group writing day at Wellington’s Surgery Studio only one month out from the shows.

18 songs were then refined and polished across four days at Auckland’s Lot23, before being presented the next evening at the first of 9 sold out shows at Auckland’s Mercury Theatre, and then at Wellington’s Paramount Theatre.

This new show was a living, breathing organism, with a server brain created for visuals which linked directly to the 56 channels of the show, and synced directly with each strain of music. The result was an entirely new visual and musical experience for Fly My Pretties.

A huge thank you goes out to not only all the incredible musicians who were a part of this journey, but also to the visual team and everyone who added their talents to this project.

We set out with a goal to bring String Theory to life through original song & collaboration, and we hope you enjoy the ride.

Enjoy, Barnaby Weir & Mikee Tucker

THE CONCEPTWaves of energy surround us constantly. Our heartbeat sets the rhythm and our mind syncs in harmony with the frequencies of our existence at every point in time simultaneously.

Music expresses our emotions, and its gravity pulls us together and pushes us apart. This continuation expands like a ripple through the multiverse.

This was the theme for String Theory - exploring each artists perspective and their own creative understanding of this life through musical storytelling.

The strong visual element in the live shows and on the artwork reflect our curiosity into finding meaning in our infinite universe, using wave patterns literally triggered by the musicians instruments as they played them.

STRING THEORY LYRICS

Page 13: STRING THEORY - Loop

Diamonds in the mine,Love is getting a rap.I’m not seeing it right I thought it was communal light.Down where the feeding frenzy formsYou come to realise that after you have eaten the minds And gotten hold of the individual insideThen they’ll just get up, stand up, and piss in the breeze.Get em on their knees! They’ll slip into a slow slide downward with ease.Beckon a life where everything is just a tease.

We’ve got to get it together

What’s it gonna takeTo collectively wakeTo give us all the big shake upAnd turn us round and we make upHave we all missed the beat? Can we land on our feet?Or are we all just mistaken? Is this the end or the breakdown?

Don’t breakdown

We’ve got to get it together

1. GET IT TOGETHER

Page 14: STRING THEORY - Loop

Take it backWhat we lack isn’t fullySweet like cinnamon, you know that surelyFind that space in the place where we need to goI need to know

I look forward evermore Need you with me I like seeing the time coming towards meFind that space in the place where we need to go I need to know

We’ll be alright, driving til light And I want it back; you only want it half the timeBut I need yours You know I can handle all my limits but I can’t stand still til you’re mine

You ask like that stealing minutes away from me Blue black line that spreads purely before me Find that space in that place where we need to goI need to know

I look for evermore need you with me I like seeing the time coming towards me Find that space in the place where we need to go I need to know

We’ll be alright, driving til light And I want it back; you only want it half the time But I need yours You know just can handle all my limits but I can’t stand still til you’re mine

2. STILL

Page 15: STRING THEORY - Loop

Take it or leave it, I stand in between. I’m just a girl, with holes in my genes.I can make it rain, don’t you wanna see?Just listen, this shit, makes no difference to me.

Shine on it.Do you.Take a fall.Pull through. If time and space can’t change us, save us, what will?

I’m just a heart beating in tune

The next generation, you’re loosing your way.Tell me you gotta stand for something, believe in the moment that made you this way.See, I can make it rain.

I’ll catch you when you fallCause ima stand for something, bigger than an ocean but for the moment I’ll roll

Shine on it.Do you.Take a fall.Pull through. If time and space can’t change us, save us, what will?

I’m just a heart beating in tune.

3. HEARTS

Page 16: STRING THEORY - Loop

I’m made of mud and star dustI’m made of love and wander lustTwo eyes, two hands, two feet of ash and rustI’m made of mud and star dust

Lucky is the moon that comes and goesMany are the reckless who sell they soul Thoughtless is the wind, heartless is the cold Merciless, merciless – give something I can holdWhen plenty are the doubts that cloud my mindCountless are the chalices of lilac wineCruel is the taste so bitter to the tongueMerciless merciless – time is wasted in the young

Are you - are you - are you - are you what I am?And am I - am I - am I - am I made of you?

Keener is the heart that waits an ageFreer is the spirit that accepts its fateFearless is the wind, refreshing is the coldPassion/compassion – now here is something you can holdWhen plenty are the doubts that cloud your mindDare to look out yonder past the distant skies Sweeter is the taste, that flitters on the tonguePassion/compassion – this time is gifted to the young

Are you - are you - are you - are you what I am?And am I - am I - am I - am I made of you?

I’m made of mud and star dustI’m made of love and wander lustTwo eyes, two hands, two feet of ash and rustI’m made of mud and star dust

Are you - are you - are you - are you what I am?And am I - am I - am I - am I made of you?

I’m made of mud and star dust

I haven’t lost my wayCause I know where I’m heading tooThat doesn’t mean to sayThat I know where I come fromThis boat has changed its sailCatch a ride on this breezeI’m always scared to failBut now I’m the only one to please I am the watchman and the guard of my heartAnd I still feel something for youAnd in my dreams we don’t fall apartAnd I heal with you I haven’t lost my wayI’ve just stopped for a restTie my laces upAnd catch my breath I’m gonna light a fire babeAnd drink my wineAnd stare right into the flameAnd touch the heat

I am the watchman and the guard of my heartAnd I still feel something for youAnd in my dreams we don’t fall apartAnd I heal with you I know you think I’ve moved onThat’s not the way it isI might sound happy in this songThings aren’t just what they seem I’m just sending loveCause that’s what I’m supposed to doAnd you can count on me tooGonna send my love to you

I am the watchman and the guard of my heartAnd I still feel something for youAnd in my dreams we don’t fall apartAnd I heal with you

Woah ohh II don’t have many regretsJust a few memories I’d rather forgetI know most people feel the same way Yes its trueNothing remains in this lifeWe’re all turned by change overnightBut don’t worry cause its out of our hands And that’s whyI’m just lucky to playWatch as the night turns to dayDreams of you say stay So lets hang outAnd listen to some soul musicAnd try to figure outWhat it’s all about But there’s youYou are the message that shinesOn my heart and soul each dayAnd no one can take that away

Yes it’s timeTime is the treasure we holdShort like a winters dayAlways feels like it’s slipping away And that’s whyI’m just lucky to playWatch as the night turns to dayDreams of you say stay So lets hang outAnd listen to some soul musicAnd try to figure outWhat it’s all about Just rememberI will always be right hereRight here by your sideBy your side ohh

Page 19: STRING THEORY - Loop

In the dark Before I close my eyesI ask that open spaceTo get me through the nightAnd if I should wakeWithout you by my side Grant me the wisdomGive me the strengthTo carry on

All I needIs someone to watch over meSomeone heaven sent From the stars aboveAll I needIs someone to watch over me Hold me close Never part

I pray in timeI’ll make it through this stormShelter me from heavy weatherFrom the dark into the dawn

I know it will rain ‘pon meWhen it does, I know I’ll beI’ll be ready

When I get thereI’m gonna be alright When I get thereI’m gonna be alright

All I needIs someone to watch over meSomeone heaven sent From the stars above All I needIs someone to watch over me Hold me closeNever partHold me closeDaddy can you hear meNever part

Page 20: STRING THEORY - Loop

Did God pluck hair from demons’ wings? And play a tune with every stringWhich gathered dust before life sprungInto attention one by one

A billionth of a single strand?Every mystery has its puzzleEvery mystery has its puzzle

Sweet music sing singBetween the stringsSweet music sing singBetween the strings

Between the stringsOooh sing

Some get lost at heavens gatesParallels loose time and fateDivine intention round and roundRound and roundRound and round

Every mystery has its puzzleEvery mystery has its puzzle

Sweet music sing sing Between the stringsSweet music singBetween the strings

Between the stringsOooh sing

8. EVERY MYSTERY

Page 21: STRING THEORY - Loop

I’ve been seeing it clearUnder colourful starsOn the rippling wavesIn the alley of sharksNow it’s deep in my headAnd I’m feeling the pullTry to push it awayBut it’s rolling around in my heart

This isn’t something to hold

Feel reality swayAs it enters the foldAnd the whispers they say ‘Tell me who have you told?’But it all wraps aroundAnd it’s thinning the airHow did something like thisBecome something we’ve missed?

There isn’t something to hold

9. SOMETHING TO HOLD

10. FOREVER

Page 23: STRING THEORY - Loop

As I look up to the sky and I ask the questions why,Am I here, what does this mean, tell me.

As I stand here with this microphone in my hand, I am just one man trying my hardest to understand,Without doubt what is it all about yeah,This thing that we call life through its turbulence and its strife,Always looking to move forward and not to reverse,There is one I have learnt its the power of the universe,If there’s something standing in my way then I will traverse,And I shall keep doing this until its time to leave in a hearse,Ain’t none of us getting out of here alive,That’s why we should live our lives to the fullest and realise,That we are all connected made of the same things,Yes that’s me and you, you and me, us the human beings,Break it down and we are just molecules in space and time,Searching for the answers to this complex grand design,We have come together collectively our third eye,So spread your wings and fly my pretties up into the sky.

As I look up to the sky and I ask the questions why,Am I here, what does this mean, tell me.

I ain’t no scientist but I know a little cosmology,The universe is dark and original matter but mostly dark energy,Now this is something that we cannot see,It’s a constant energy density filling space harmogenously,When I was going up my old man use to read national geographic,He would explain to me how the universe was mathematic,He also taught me about IO, the Maori belief on how the universe started with Te Kore and Te Po,Ko te Kore, Te Kore Te WhiWhia, Te Kore Te Kere, Te Kore te Taumaua, Te Kore te Matua,IO existed in this parentless void this is where he became conscious and formulated,Papatuanuku and Ranginui were now created,Through the koas and darkness Mother Earth she gave birth to seventy sons,Tanemahuta seperated his Dad and Mum,So here we are now in this world of light,All of us as one.

As I look up to the sky and I ask the questions why,Am I here, what does this mean, tell me.

11. THIS LIFE

Page 24: STRING THEORY - Loop

Here I amLiving on this twirling ballFloating in space thinking..What?!

I’ve gotta big big heart,It pumps blood, through my body,It makes me do things that areNaughty,So much detailIt blows the mind

Maybe we have lived beforeOn a different frequencyMaybe we just disappearAnd turn into energyCrashed out like strange attractorsBeing the anomaly

But for all that glory, power, divine..I’ll be yours if you are mine

Thinking, what?

Maybe we have lived beforeOn a different frequencyMaybe we just disappearAnd turn into energyCrashed out like strange attractorsCrashed out like strange attractorsCrashed out like strange attractorsCrashed out like strange attractors
