STRIPPING PIPES IN AZERBAIJAN
Introduction
Project target: CPC (Caspian Pipe Coating) managed by Bredero Shaw has the necessity
to remove the coating on more than 700 pipes which have been stocked during the last
Project. The company can not stop its production because of tight schedule. As a result,
Bredero seeks alternative methods to solve the problem.
Finally the meeting among Indan, RPR and Bredero was carried out in early summer.
People Involved
RPR: Dag Rune Wiksten (Technical Sales Manager).
Indan: Patxi Anza (Manager)
Sergio Lebrero (Project Manager)
Bredero Shaw: Peter Steel (Maintenance Manager)
Farzad Zaeem (Engineering and Mobilisation Manager)
Jamila Jabbarli (Procurement and Contracts Manager)
Scope of the Project
Place: Azerbaijan (BP Project)
Date: 1 September 2015
Duration: 3,5 month
Features: Bredero Shaw Company got removed the coating on 776 pipes with 12,3
meters of length and 0,8 metres of diameter. Steel thickness between 21 and 24 mm.
Removed area 25475 m2, Coating of the pipes (70% = PE + Adhesive + FBE / 20% = FBE
+ adhesive / 10% = PE + adhesive).
Thickness PE= 6-8 mm.

Implementation
Equipment: Induction Generator of 400 V, Induction Head 10 cm x 10 cm, Transformer
3:1 XL and Chiller.
Special request: 4 electricity filters placed between generator and power plant to avoid the problems with the high frequencies.
Auxiliaries: Bogey to semi-automate stripping process.

Experience
Description: Stripping rejected pipes executed during the production and daily pipes
generated in the starting up of the plant, which are used every day like a test at start up. Duration of the removing process for a pipe with 3 Layer: PE + Adh. + FBE = 2 hours.
Stripping Speeds
Stripping in one time (3 Layer)
Rotation: 5 - 7 Hz
Travel: 2 - 2.4 Hz
Stripping in two times (1º PE and Adhesive /2º FBE)
Rotation: 8.5 - 10 Hz
Travel: 2.5 – 3 Hz

Relevant problems
1. Chiller: Without enough power to work continuously
2. Generator: Trip Fault
3. Supply: Power unit
4. Performance: Environmental Conditions
5. Bogey: guidance system
6. Cables damaged because of stress and friction
Solutions
1. Chiller AX5 was changed by new model: AX10
2. 4 filters were installed to remove earth faults
3. The equipment was plugged in to power plant
4. Stripping method was modified to increase the performance
5. New guidance system where the forces are distributed 6. The cable was cut and spliced.
Conclusions
Process carried out to remove the accumulation of stock occurred during a project of
more than 2 years of duration, completed successfully and replacing a system of waterjet of 1000 bar of pressure.
