If one has a talent, in exercising it, more will be asked; in not exercising it, less will be possible to have. We approach our lives in the same way. However, we are not equal in talent, but, rather, in effort. What we are asked to do is to use what we have to enrich to world and strengthen our brothers and sisters on the journey. Namely, that we have all been given a common gift that must not be wasted: Christ Himself. Our participation in the divine life is something that I have called “infinite wealth” very often. Our prayers constantly refer to our life as one of adopted children. It is good to remember that ours is a life of abundance, fullness… The gifts we receive are not small; it is a great talent, in a sense, to live as a Christian. We remember, too, that Jesus may have been directing this with a similar idea very much in mind. The Pharisees were the keepers of the law. Jesus respects and fulfills the law in his very self. He was certainly telling this parable as a rebuke of sorts. Given great talent, the Pharisees were still among the wicked because they buried the talent (the Law) and did not put what had been entrusted them to productive use. Jesus was saying “What you have will be taken from you.” We have to consider this. What have we been entrusted? How do I proclaim Christ in the use of my gifts and abilities? Am I welcoming, loving? How do I assist the most vulnerable with my time? Do I take care of the things that are entrusted to me? All of these questions need to be asked if we are to enjoy the wealth given us in Jesus Christ. So that we may live full and rich lives, may we always in all that we do, proclaim that Jesus is Lord, and in so doing, become wealthy. Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. The parable in this Sunday’s liturgy is one that most of us know and whose theme is

immediately clear to most of us. If one has a talent, in exercising it, more will be asked; in not

exercising it, less will be possible to have. We approach our lives in the same way.

However, we are not equal in talent, but, rather, in effort. What we are asked to do is to use

what we have to enrich to world and strengthen our brothers and sisters on the journey. If we

are artists, we must find a way to express ourselves artistically. If we are scientists, we must try

to examine and analyze the world around us for greater understanding. And so on. We are

asked here to work from those gifts we have been given.

But there is another, infrequently made, but greater point in this parable. Namely, that we

have all been given a common gift that must not be wasted: Christ Himself. Our participation in

the divine life is something that I have called “infinite wealth” very often. Our prayers

constantly refer to our life as one of adopted children. It is good to remember that ours is a life

of abundance, fullness… The gifts we receive are not small; it is a great talent, in a sense, to live

as a Christian.

We remember, too, that Jesus may have been directing this with a similar idea very much in

mind. The Pharisees were the keepers of the law. Jesus respects and fulfills the law in his very

self. He was certainly telling this parable as a rebuke of sorts. Given great talent, the Pharisees

were still among the wicked because they buried the talent (the Law) and did not put what had

been entrusted them to productive use. Jesus was saying “What you have will be taken from

you.”

We have to consider this. What have we been entrusted? How do I proclaim Christ in the use

of my gifts and abilities? Am I welcoming, loving? How do I assist the most vulnerable with my

time? Do I take care of the things that are entrusted to me? All of these questions need to be

asked if we are to enjoy the wealth given us in Jesus Christ. So that we may live full and rich

lives, may we always in all that we do, proclaim that Jesus is Lord, and in so doing, become

wealthy.

Your servant in Our Blessed Lord,

Fr. Michael

Question of the Week:

What are the riches God has given you, and how have you utilized them?

Knowing The master, with the expectation that each servant will increase what has been given, gives every servant in this parable riches. Even one talent was a significant amount of riches - by some calculations in today's economy a talent was close to a million dollars! The wealth each of us has been given by our Master is a share in his very life.

This wealth that we’ve received from the Father does not necessarily mean financial riches; our riches can be great compassion for others, or the artistic abilities we possess, or other such strengths. To bury it was to waste its potential. Even a small amount is an incalculable richness. We will be judged by how we have chosen to allow this life to increase, to grow within us. Loving We are to grow into the rich person God intends us to be. In our everyday living of the Gospel, we can be fear-ful or lazy, we can be safe. We can do what is minimally necessary — go to Mass, get to confession, say our daily prayers — but take no risks. Real growth in our spiritual walk and the life God has given us comes by taking risks. When we choose to die to ourselves, we receive from God truly abundant life, because in the dying to self we are more perfectly conformed to Christ. Serving We participate in the risk of dying to self and increasing our life when we see someone we don't know, poor and in need, and choose to reach out to them. We risk dying to self and increasing our life when we share our own "talents" by volunteering for a liturgical ministry or for one of the parish committees, even if we feel others may be more qualified.

God's life is given to us to show how we can have an even greater abundance of life.

Take a risk and increase life by: • Participating in upcoming Parish Advent service

opportunities: ◦ Involvement in Christmas baskets ◦ Salvation Army bell ringing ◦ Kid’s Shop/Canandaigua Christmas Shop

• Investing money to grow the Kingdom. For in-stance, donate to the Kalama Project

• Posting a story of a risk taken to encourage others

Sharing the Gospel You can choose to waste your time, your money, and your special tal-ents. You can be selfish with them, too. Or you can use those gifts from God to spread good news about Je-sus. When you choose to use your gifts for God, and he will fill your heart with joy.

Prayer God, help me to use my time, my money, and my special talents for you.
