GREAT START

It is wonderful to see our students refreshed after

their holidays and ready to learn. Already we have

some exciting opportunities in place for Term 1

including the new program “Journey” for students in

Years 6-10, a new Instrumental Music band program

for Year 5 students and continuing students,

Operation Flinders, Year 9 Aquatics Camp, Year 11

Surf Camp and our Swimming and Sports Days coming

up very soon.

The classrooms have been very busy with many

engaging learning activities across all subject areas for

students R-12. I would like to thank and congratulate

our teaching staff for the huge amount of preparation

through the holidays and also in Week 0. Some staff

are in new roles. We welcome Mrs Madelaine Farley

to the Year 5/6/7 class and Miss Heather Barnett in

the R/1/2 class.

Of course our start to the school year would not run

smoothly without the input of our very professional

support staff. Thank you for your efforts and helping

to make our school ready for the 2018 school year.

I would also like to introduce our new Deputy

Principal Mr Jacob Dawson who has commenced his 5

year tenure with us and is already having significant

impact in the school. We are delighted to welcome

him and look forward to his ongoing contributions to

the school both as a leader and specialist

Maths/Science teacher.

This week we have our exciting Parents in Education

STEM DAY on THURSDAY 8th FEBRUARY commencing

at 2pm with open classrooms running STEM

activities. (As per the note and RSVP sent home in

Week 1)

You will have the opportunity to see such things in

action as the mini skate-park challenge, 3D & Laser

printing, problem solving ‘Starburst’, Year 5 cooking,

virtual reality, building /picture books and re-creating

an invention. Afternoon Tea and BBQ Tea are

provided. The afternoon will be a wonderful

opportunity for parents to visit classrooms, hear and

try STEM in action at the workshop for teachers and

parents, meet our Governing Councillors and Parents

& Friends members, plus an opportunity to meet staff

and enjoy the food provided. If you haven’t returned

your reply slip, please use the RSVP form to respond

for catering purposes as a matter of urgency, or

telephone the school.

Last week at our first assembly for the year, I spoke to

students about the Australian of the Year Awards. It is

incredibly inspiring to think of the achievements of

the 2018 Australian of the Year, quantum physicist,

Michelle Yvonne Simmons. Five years ago she made

the world’s first transistor made from a single atom,

as well as the world’s thinnest wire. Now she is

looking to build a quantum computer capable of

solving problems in minutes, which would otherwise

take thousands of years. She sees our current era as

being like the space race of the computing era.

Australia’s Local Hero Award went to Eddie Woo, a

NSW Maths teacher who has become famous for

posting his videos about Maths on Wootube. In his

acceptance speech Mr Woo spoke about the powerful

transformational powers of education. He said

“Education can radically change the trajectory of a

child’s life. It can transform the possibilities of what a

child can become and achieve” and “That can change

a life, a family and a community forever.”

He said, “To all the children out there, I want you to

understand from my story that suffering doesn’t

define you, what other people say doesn’t define you

– what you choose to do with the opportunities

you’ve got – that’s what defines you.”

From 2018, DECD will be working to achieve its aspiration of becoming ‘A World Class Education and Child Development System’. Next week I will be attending the DECD Education Leaders Day, the theme being: ‘Our ambitious goal is to build a world-class education and child development system, enabling growth for every student, in every class, in every school’ as per the DECD Strategic Plan. It is an exciting time to be part of DECD and the quality of achievements in public education in our state. 2018 is a new year for all of us with new and exciting

opportunities at our school. So let’s all take up the

challenges that present themselves, be prepared to

give our best, when we think the job is done – ask

ourselves how can we do it better? Learning from

each other and using our teachers as the greatest

resource, is the key to success. Let’s make 2018 the

best school year for everyone.

WORK HARD, HAVE FUN, GROW YOUR BRAIN.

Hi my name is Jacob Dawson, I am the new Deputy

Principal at Coomandook. I have come from Murray

Bridge High, where I was the Year 8 coordinator. I

have experience in a range of school leadership roles

and am passionate about

teaching Mathematics. This year

I am currently teaching Year 8

and Year 10 Mathematics and I

also share the Year 8 Home

Class with Mr Roberts. I look

forward to getting to know all

the students, staff and families

as I settle in to life here at Coomy.
