ABOUTFor hundreds of years, Portsmouth’s importance as a naval base meant that it was one of the most heavily defended cities in Europe. The Round Tower was the first of a series of permanent fortifications that were built in Ports-mouth over the centuries. Work on the Round Tower was begun in about 1418, and it was completed in the 1420s. Before 1400, Portsmouth had been attacked and burnt sev-eral times by the French during the Hundred Years War. The Tower was intended to defend the entrance to the Harbour and prevent enemy ships from entering. The Round Tower and the other nearby fortifications were purchased by Portsmouth City Council the 1960s. Currently the tower is undergoing redevelopment into a contemporary creative quarter. “A medium term project that will enable Portsmouth to bring back into use, its built Herit-age. The Hot Walls arches have been used by Point Battery Artists for many years while the Point Barracks and Round Tower have stood empty with little or no public access, except for Heritage Open days once a year when the tower has been opened and has been visited by 100’s of people. Point Barracks was once used by Fort Cumberland Guard as their ‘museum’ and there is still some evidence of this, but not in a condition where it could be displayed. The ARTches project aims to turn these buildings into an Arts and Crafts quarter for the city. “ David Evans, Seafront Manager

ERIC YOUNG

BIO Eric Young is a graduate in illustration and has recently come home from his travels being a graphic designer and arts teacher in hong kong. Full of inspiration and ideas he back on the local scene to share his vision of art to the people. TITLE Heaven’s Light Our Guide The piece illustrates a contemporary take on the city’s motto ‘ Heaven’s light Our Guide’. ‘Heaven’s Light Our Guide’ is the motto of the Order of the Star of India. This order was founded by Queen Victoria in 1861, and the insignia included a star, which in this instance has five points not eight, as shown in todays emblem. It was very fitting that the star, with its gilded rays, should form a prominent and frequent ornament on the troopships which formerly conveyed the British Troops to and from India and called regulary at Portsmouth. There at once is a link with the Navy and with Portsmouth. The words of the motto are appropriate to the time-honoured Star and Crescent badge of Portsmouth which over 700 years has served as arms and seal for the Borough, and now the city.
