Having a full complement of material handling equipment and service helped Wiese USA provide a new and improved solution for one of Missouri’s premier manufacturers, Emerson Climate Technologies in Lebanon, MO. But it took more than the right equipment to make an impact; Wiese provided the experts who crafted an ‘outside the box’ solution to material handling equipment maintenance problems plaguing the manufacturer.

After thoroughly evaluating more than 50 electric trucks in Emerson’s fleet and identifying performance oppor-tunities, the Wiese team provided a comprehensive recommendation. Because Emerson has a membership in MAM they were able to secure a discounted rate from Allied Partner Wiese, resulting in the entire fleet under-going a maintenance overhaul to bring the fleet back to peak condition. Along the way, the Wiese Team learned the plant has a strong safety culture embedded with continuous improvement methodologies, designed to ensure employees have a safe working environment.

In keeping with those initiatives, step one was to be certain proper battery handling procedures were met. “This is a critical area,” explained Lee Maggard, Wiese Product Support Specialist. “You must have an understand-ing of the entire operation – not just how the trucks are used. Our team relied on their expertise in operations to develop a plan to ensure continued worker safety as well as improve overall operational efficiency with electric fork trucks,” said Maggard. “One of the most extreme examples of project savings was made possible by our expertise with battery handling and electric vehicles. Battery test indicated some batteries had bad cells, so Wiese technicians set out to create two good batteries from the cells of three that had gone bad. By recycling all the battery components we could, we saved the customer thousands of dollars in product plus avoided the expense and waste of battery disposal,” said Maggard.

With the fleet back in shape, Maggard provided a detail maintenance plan for each individual piece of equip-ment, including parts breakdown and necessary repairs; then he outlined a Total Maintenance and Repair pro-gram to help ensure Emerson can keep the fleet in top condition. With fixed pricing on preventive mainte-nance and repairs, the outcome has been significant. According to the Lebanon Plant Manager, Keith Calhoun, overall efficiency has improved 10-15% primarily due to equipment uptime. “Prior to contracting with Wiese, it was common to have three or four trucks down all the time while we sorted out quotes, contracts and billing issues related to repairs. With Wiese’s Total Maintenance and Repair program we’ve eliminated all that hassle,” Calhoun said.

In addition, rental units from Wiese’s fleet of current model electrics were offered at prices similar to competi-tive units, many of which were nearly ten years old. “The quality of the rental fleet from Wiese versus our previous supplier is a tremendous advantage for us,” said Calhoun. “We are very appreciative of the service we receive from the entire Wiese Team.” According to Maggard, providing reliable rental units means far less maintenance and virtually eliminates downtime at this busy facility. “Using their MAM benefits has truly helped this plant improve their overall process. They have even come to rely on Wiese for crane and hoist inspections plus dock and door service, helping to eliminate the vendor/contractor count at the facility and streamlining the process of hiring and invoicing multiple vendors. We really are working as a great team,” he concluded.
