STUDENT COUNCIL UPDATE Student Council had another great year in 2010-2011. They worked extremely hard to put on two successful dances this year. First was the Homecoming Dance in which 1500 students attended in October. The second was the Candyland Winter Dance in February.

Money was raised for several Different charities. In addition to donations, Student Council also worked to make a difference in the community by sponsoring and running two blood mobiles and also made contributions of time and effort to the two Yearbook blood drives. With the sponsorship and help at these four blood drives the American Red Cross received 579 pints of blood resulting in $4000 worth of scholarships for seniors. Andrew McClain received a $1000 scholarship and Adam LaPlante, Allison Wrabel, Greg Scott, Stephanie Schwarz, Travis Bosanac and Lauren Niemiec all received $500.

Good luck to all the newly elected Student Council officers and representatives that have been elected for 2011-2012. They are:

SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE AT THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WEBSITE.

DRAMA NEWSIt has been another exciting year for the Drama Club! This fall the thespians produced Romeo and Juliet with a modern twist. It was set in San Francisco in 1967, replete with tie-dye, fringe and a psychedelic sound track. The cast created an atmosphere of what someone might have felt walking into Golden Gate Park during the summer of love. Seniors, Mallory King, Brian Capuder and Ryan Gates brought their considerable talent and experience to the stage, while freshman Spencer Kilgore, a neophyte of the theatre, wowed audiences with his portrayal of Romeo. It was great fun for all the students! In the spring, 12 students journeyed to state conferences to participate in activities; Senior Scott Miesse played the lead in Good Times, and was joined by juniors Lauren Macatangay and Terry Hugo in supporting roles. It was an outstanding performance! The Drama Club hopes that with the passing of the levy, the musical will return next spring so that students will be able to enjoy that experience!

SCIENCE SPECTRUM

Biology - Biology students completed their genetics unit by researching inheritable disorders and reporting them in the form of brochures, power points and posters.  Recently, they have culminated their study of evolution by constructing geologic timelines that mark the evolution of multicellular lifeforms.  Now, the students are geared up and ready to finish the year with dissections!

BIO II- The BIO II classes were into Botany the fourth quarter with a multitude of activities and labs as they discover and unearth the secret lives of plants. In the classroom, they grew “Fast Plants”; observed different fruits, nuts and seeds along with designing seeds for the best dispersal distance. Outside the classroom the students continue to beautify the school courtyard by the planning and planting of low maintenance perennial bulbs. The purchase of Dahlias; Asiatic Day Lilies; Sedums; Liatris and Daffodils along with mulch was made possible through a PTA grant awarded to Ms. Conway. Donation of a rain barrel and composter were made by Tractor Supply Company in Medina. Check the courtyard out as each of the four BIO II classes was responsible for the planting and maintaining of a flower bed against the walls of the building.

Chemistry- 12 students from Honors and AP Chemistry participated in the Regional Chemistry Olympiad exam down at CSU.  Chemistry students have been working hard in the classroom and laboratory in preparation for lab based college courses. Many chemistry students have been selected for summer internships at Cleveland Clinic and NASA.

Earth Systems Science- 4th quarter geology labs with real old rocks, fossils, and minerals!   CPE Science- This spring all CPE Science students competed in the 3rd annual pine car derby competition. Students were challenged to use the kit they were given in class to construct a car that would complete the track in the least possible time. Students also related the construction and racing of their car to many of the physics principles covered this semester in class by authoring physics problems, writing a short paper, and presenting what they learned. The students spent a week racing their cars in the wrestling room to determine the fastest car from each class period. The top car from each class was entered into the final races which took place as an in-school field trip.

PHYSICS- As always, the physics and honors physics students were busy during the second semester. We studied a medley of topics including structures, heat, electrostatics, basic circuitry, sound and light. Laboratory work included investigations of calorimetry, circuitry, simple harmonic motion, resonance, reflection and refraction.

The highlights of the semester definitely revolved around the projects. The third quarter project was the 12th annual balsa wood structure competition in which students research, design and build balsa wood bridges. The bridges were required to span 60-cm and have a mass of 80-grams (or less). After the bridges were tested (to the point of failure), they were graded based on an efficiency ratio (of the weight held by the bridge to the weight of the structure itself). The winning (physics) bridge was constructed by Rachael Walcoff and Angie Schon. It had an efficiency ratio of 748 having a mass of 71.6 grams and held 117.5 pounds. The winning honors physics bridge (which had to hold a larger testing block than physics bridges) was constructed by Brian Kammer and Bryce Blake. It had a mass of 79.8 grams and held 122.5 pounds (a ratio of 700). GREAT JOB!

The fourth quarter project was the 3rd annual eco-egg drop. Students were required to research, design and build a structure to safely transport up to 3 eggs from the top of Catan stadium to the ground; a descent of almost 12-meters. Prizes were awarded to the best (safest, lightest and most accurate) went to Duncan O’Leary and the most creative design went to Kyle Overton, who built the “Lunar Lander”.

Our AP Physics students worked feverishly to prepare for the AP physics exam in early May. In addition, students worked on independent studies in which they could design a unique experiment to investigate the topic of their choice. Following the AP exam, students worked on an exciting new project for which they designed and built (paper) roller coasters. This was an amazing project from both the student and teacher perspective.

The Physics department would like to thank all the students for an absolutely fabulous year and wish the seniors luck in their futures. Juniors … we’ll see you next year.

Page 14: Strongsville City Schools / Overview€¦ · Web viewStrongsville art students’ “green” themes illustrated ideas for changing vacant city lots into “community city gardens”,

Forensics - Forensic students studied toxicology, analyzed blood spatter patterns, determined age, race and gender based on skeletal remains, studied aspects of forensic law, analyzed fingerprints and had a guest speaker from the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office.

SOCIAL STUDIESThe SHS Social Studies Department hosted a visit by the Ohio Secretary of State, Mr. Jon Husted, on Tuesday, June 17, 2011. Members of the junior class listened as Mr. Husted explained the importance of voter registration, as well as Ohio’s importance in national elections. Students were then encouraged to apply what they learned in their classes and participate in the “Elect Your Sticker” campaign, to choose a new “I Voted Today” sticker for Ohio. Anyone can participate by going to www.ElectYourSticker.com by August 8, 2011.

The SHS Academic “Academic Challenge” Team consisting of Seniors Sam Blankenship, and Divya Raj and Junior Shriya Srinvasan defeated rival Brunswick and Painesville Riverside in an exciting, “come-from-behind” performance. A plaque commemorating the victory can be seen on the main office of the High School. Congratulations to these students and the alternates, Brian Cook, Mudd Hussain, Junior Bristee Das, and Sophomore Carter Frazee. This year’s academic team was again led by Mrs. Wakefield and assisted by Mr. Tumino.

Congratulations to seniors Michael Meldon and Jeffrey Shumay for receiving certificates from the organization TOPSS (Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools), a branch of the American Psychological Association, for their academic work this semester in their psychology classes. These young men were the top Psychology students at SHS this school year.

Congratulations to Michael C. Meldon, who was selected as the Social Studies Department’s senior scholar for 2011. Michael had taken in Honors Global Studies, AP US History, AP Government, Economics, Sociology and Psychology classes. Michael plans on attending The Ohio State University in the fall.

U.S. History teacher, Mrs. Lucile Jordan, was selected as “Connections Teacher of Year” by members of the Connections class. A luncheon was held to recognize the program at the Crown Plaza Hotel, thanks to the generosity of the Strongsville Optimist Club.

Mr. Michael Sack and Mr. Brian Tumino were among the recipients of the inaugural presentation of the Top 5% of the Senior Class Most Influential Educator awards program. This is a new honor that Principal William Steffen instituted this year. Mr. Sack was selected by Jimmy Cheng and Kevin Kesicki. Mr. Tumino was selected by Michael Meldon.

The members of the department were also very involved in preparing our students for various exams. Sophomore teachers used the Pro-Ohio software to prepare students for the OGT exam. AP teachers, Mr. Mack, Mr. Sack, and Mrs. Papish, conducted after school and weekend review sessions to provide students with additional opportunities to score well on their exams. College credit is available for those who score well on these exams.

The end of the year in Mrs. Wakefield’s Advanced Placement United States History often seems like it should end with the AP test the first week of May. To keep the students interest in learning, Mrs. Wakefield had her students evaluating the presidents of the United States in a format similar to March Madness: Presidential Bracketology! The presidents were ranked and paired and the students were required to find a historically valid reason for the president to move on. The goal was a one-page paper highlighting their top choice for president! Presidents who “won” the bracketology included Ronald Reagan, Franklin Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.

Also her class also hosted a “Dessert Party from History.” Each student chose a person from history (American) that they would like to invite to the party. Their assignment was to write five in depth questions, along with their rationale for asking the question. The culminating component of the party was the reading of the students’ Bio - Poems, that reflected the research they had completed on their person. We had great cookies, brownies and taco dip and chips as we listened to the poems being read. While a great time was had by all, the learning in class continued to the very end!

Page 15: Strongsville City Schools / Overview€¦ · Web viewStrongsville art students’ “green” themes illustrated ideas for changing vacant city lots into “community city gardens”,

Mrs. Papish’s AP US Government classes were treated to special guest lecturers. Cuyahoga County Probate Judge, Laura Gallagher, and her bailiff, Ed Klafka, spent a period with the students discussing the day-to-day operations of the courts. Mr. Genther's Global Studies classes throughout the 4th quarter have been examining various cultures from around the globe to gain an understanding and appreciation for both their rich history and also cultural diversity.  Throughout the journey students researched cultures in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.  As students developed their understanding they also gained valuable insight into the globalized economies and world in which they soon will enter into.

Congratulations to Mr. Richard C. Mack and Mrs. Deborah M. Wakefield, on their retirements from Strongsville High School. Mr. Mack, a graduate of The University of Akron (B.A., M.A.), has spent 33 years in Strongsville, having taught at Albion Junior High and Strongsville High School. Among his teaching assignments were 7th grade Geography, 9th grade American History, 9th grade Global Studies and World History, and 10th grade U.S. History, as well as Advanced Placement U.S. History. Mrs.Wakefield, a graduate of Miami University (B.S.Ed.) and Kent State (M.Ed.), has spent 26 years in Strongsville. She, like Mr. Mack, taught at Albion Junior High and SHS. Geography, World History, Global Studies, American History, US Government, Current Issues, Philosophy, AP US History, and AP US Government are among the many courses she has taught in that time. The department wishes them both good luck and good health!

On Art Ambassador trips, which happen once a month, the Cleveland Museum of Art staff teaches the students how to give guided tours, improve their knowledge of historical events related to art, understand the restoration process of art and the arrangements of the pieces in the galleries, and comprehend the artistic techniques that empower each piece of art, along with so much more. Strongsville Art Ambassadors design philanthropic events for the Cleveland Museum of Art with students from schools all over Cuyahoga County. This school year, our Ambassadors created an amazing educational program in relation to “The Lure of Painted Poetry”, a special exhibition at the museum, which highlighted achievements of Japanese and Korean artists who imaginatively fused the genres of art and poetry together in their art. The Ambassadors taught the community how to paint in the style of Asian painters using sumi brushes, inks, stencils of Chinese kanji writing and watercolors. Parents and children put their own spin on works from the exhibition with the help of our Ambassadors. Afterwards, parents and children were given a scavenger hunt sheet with 10 pieces of work from this exhibition with clues created by our ambassadors. Community Day brings Strongsville and the Cleveland Communities to the museum. The Art Ambassadors Program would not be possible without the support of the following sponsors and their love and support of the arts: The Cleveland Museum of Art Women’s League, Arts in Strongsville, The Strongsville Rotary Club, Legacy in Education and Judith and Vince Sagan. Earth Day Coalition Competition

Strongsville art students’ “green” themes illustrated ideas for changing vacant city lots into “community city gardens”, and how the “importation of food from outside our state contributes to global warming” for the Earth Day Coalition’s Competition. In their artworks they had to show solutions to these problems and construct something environmentally friendly. High Schools from all over the greater Cleveland area were invited to enter this competition. Remarkably, Strongsville High School students received the most awards. Winning students received six tickets to the Cleveland Metropark Zoo, fifty dollars, and their works will be published on the Earth Day tour site. They also encouraged Strongsville’s elementary students to develop chalk compositions using the theme of “safety”. High School and Middle School students worked three hours on their compositions using the theme of “Freedom”. Artwork was judged on originality, composition, and the development of the theme. Congratulations to the following High School students who won awards in this competition.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC DEPARTMENT

The instrumental music department had a fabulous spring! Our bands did a fantastic job at OMEA District contest with the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble qualifying for state competition. The bands had a great spring concert and awards, which featured all four concert bands, our jazz band and our percussion ensemble. Anthony Jakubowski was awarded the John Philip Sousa band award and Kevin Kesicki was the recipient of the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. Both are national awards given to outstanding musicians.

The Strongsville orchestras had a fantastic spring with an exciting spring concert and senior recognition. The Symphony Orchestra, String Orchestra and Chamber Strings all received superior ratings at OMEA State Orchestra Contest held at Lakewood H.S. in March.

We wish all of our seniors good luck as they go forth into the world.

Even though it is summer, all of the bands and orchestras are still preparing for a busy fall season of concerts and performances. We thank our Strongsville Instrumental Music Boosters for funding our program and everyone in our city for their support.
