    COURSE SYLLABUSStructural Geology GEOL3510

ANDStructural Geology Lab - GEOL 3515

    Fall, 2008

GEO 3510: Fundamentals of descriptive, kinematic and dynamic analysis of structures in theEarth's crust and a theoretical treatment of stress and strain. Prerequisites; Math 1050, 1060,

GEO 1110/1115, and GEO 1220/1225, and advanced standing in program. Co-requisite: GEO3515.

GEO 3515: Consists of structural problems solved by geometrical, graphical and stereographicmethods. Includes extensive work with maps and cross sections. Co-requisite: GEO 3510.

Instructor: Mark Colberg, SC 014, 865-8331, [email protected]

Class Meetings: (SC 007) Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8:00-8:50 am

Lab Meetings: (SC 007) Thursday, 2:00-4:50 pm

Office Hours: Monday through Friday; 9:00 - 10:00 am, otherwise catch me when you can.Outside of set office hours, appointments are encouraged.

    Required Texts:

    1. Davis and Reynolds, 1996, Structural Geology of Rocks and Regions, 2nd ed, John Wiley andSons, New York, New York

    2. Rowland, Duebendorfer and Schiefelbein, 2007, Structural Analysis and Synthesis Alaboratory course in structural geology, 3rd ed., Blackwell, Malden, MA

    Other Required Materials:

    1. Colored pencils (at least 15)2. Ruler (centimeter and inches)3. Straight edge4. Protractor5. Drawing compass (get a good one)6. 4H or 5H pencils7. Drawing pen set8. Scientific calculator

Course Structure: At SUU, geology courses are often subdivided into a lecture component anda laboratory component. Although these two components are listed as separate courses, THEYARE CO-REQUISITES AND MUST BE TAKEN TOGETHER. Lecture courses and labcourses are closely related. In this course, the lab will allow the student to put into practiceconcepts learned in lecture.

Course Objectives: Geology is a very broad science and encompasses a very wide range oftopics. Structural geology is just one of the topics, or disciplines, associated with geology. Asgeologists, however, structural geology is one of the most important disciplines you will study. The Earth is composed of rocks, and these rocks are often deformed due to differential stressesand tectonic forces. Understanding the resulting folds, faults and other structural features is

important to understanding mineral deposits, petroleum resources, environmental issues, and thetectonic evolution of planet earth. Additionally, structural geology is fundamental to geologicalmapping. Students should leave this course with an understanding of basic geological structures, the skills needed to describe and analyze these structures, the forces required to produce thesestructures, and the basic understanding of the fundamentals of geologic mapping.

Requirements and Grading: Separate grades will be assigned for the lecture and laboratorycomponents. Grades for the lecture component will be assessed through performance on three

lecture exams and a final exam. The laboratory component will be assessed through performanceon laboratory exercises, and a local mapping project.

    Lecture Grades Lab Grades

    Exams (3) 75% Lab Exercises 70%

Final Exam 25% Mapping project 30%

Grades will be assigned according to the following scale.

    A 93 - 100 C 73 - 76A- 90 - 93 C- 70 - 72B+ 87 - 89 D+ 67 - 69B 83 - 86 D 63 - 66B- 80 - 82 D- 60 - 63C+ 77 - 79 F < 60

Attendance: Students should attend all classes. Attendance will not be monitored. However, because material covered in the latter portions of the course is dependent on material from theearly portions of the course, missing classes can be VERY detrimental to your understanding andyour performance in class. DO NOT MISS EXAMS! MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL NOT BEGIVEN EXCEPT IN SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES (I.E. ILLNESS, DEATH IN FAMILY,ETC.). YOU MUST PROVIDE DOCUMENTATION (DR'S EXCUSE, DEATH

CERTIFICATE / OBITUARIES ETC.) IN ORDER TO TAKE AN EXAM LATE. IF YOUKNOW THAT YOU MUST MISS AN EXAM ON A GIVEN DATE, YOU CAN MAKEARRANGEMENTS TO TAKE THE TEST AT ANOTHER TIME. TURN IN ALL LECTUREOR LAB ASSIGNMENTS ON TIME. EXCEPT DURING SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES (I.E.ILLNESS, DEATH IN FAMILY, ETC.) ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE DOCKED 5 POINTS FOREVERY DAY THEY ARE LATE. ASSIGNMENTS TURNED IN MORE THAN 5 DAYSAFTER THE DUE DATE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AND WILL BE GIVEN A GRADE OFZERO. AGAIN UNDER SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES, MISSED ASSIGNMENTS OREXAMS CAN BE MADE UP AFTER MAKING ARRANGEMENTS WITH THEINSTRUCTOR.

Test Policy: It is departmental policy that students do not receive completed tests to keep. Testswill be returned in class for review only, and must be returned to the instructor by the end of theclass period. Grades will be held for unreturned tests. Students may review their tests at any timein the instructors office.

Disruptions: Please respect your instructor and fellow students and limit class room disruptionsby observing the following; 1) Please do not arrive to class late. 2) Unless you are an emergencyresponder, please turn off cell phones. 3) Do not have a conversation with your neighbor. Yourinstructor reserves the right to ask you to leave in the event of continuous disruptions.

Academic Dishonesty: Academic (scholastic) dishonesty will not be tolerated and will beprosecuted to the fullest extent. You are expected to have read and understood the appropriate

section of the student handbook (published by Student Services) regarding studentresponsibilities and rights, and the intellectual property policy, for information about proceduresand what constitutes acceptable on-campus behavior. In short, don't cheat - it's not worth it! Ifyou are caught, the consequences can be BAD. If you are not caught, remember that by beingdishonest in a class you are being dishonest with yourself since you are not allowing yourself tolearn, and learning is why we are at this institution in the first place.

Students with Disabilities: Students with medical, psychological, learning, or other disabilities

desiring academic adjustments, accommodations, or auxiliary aids will need to contact theSouthern Utah University Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), room206F of the Sharwan Smith Center, or phone (435) 865-8022. SSD, not your instructor, determines eligibility for and authorizes the provision of these services.

Class Schedule: A schedule for both the lecture and laboratory components of this coursefollows on the next page. Note that this schedule is subject to change.

    Course Fees: A $20.00 lab fee is required for the lab portion of this course (GEO 3215). Inaddition, the College of Science has a centralized fee of $2.00 per credit hour to be used for thecontinuous improvement of the quality of our science courses.;

Disclaimer: Information contained in this syllabus, other than the grading, late assignments, makeup work, and attendance policies, may be subject to change without notice, as deemedappropriate by the instructor.
