GBGMAPS Structural and Utility Assessment

GBGMAPS, formed in 2008, is a joint venture between GBG Australia and McMullen Nolan Group (MNG). The partnership brings GBG’s advanced subsurface investigation techniques together with MNG’s industry leading survey and spatial information services.

Through a process of consultation and pre-project planning, GBGMAPS can tailor a geophysical solution to provide enhanced structural or subsurface information to add value to almost any geotechnical, engineering or remediation project including:

• Miningandinfrastructure• Marine• Environmentalandgroundwater• Archaeology• Structuralandnon-destructivetesting

The application of appropriate geophysical methods carried out by trained and experienced personnel makes GBGMAPS a leader in subsurface geophysical solutions.

The assessment and maintenance of infrastructure is of importance for both the private and public sector. This includes infrastructure above ground such as buildings and bridges, on ground such as roads and rail, and below ground such as tunnels, culverts and utilities.

By using a combination of non-destructive and geophysical test methods as well as targeted invasive testing and laboratory testing GBGMAPS can carry out a holistic assessment of engineered structures of most construction types. Typically investigations can be carried out for:

• Assessmentofinternalconditionanddefectsofstructures• Re-specificationofstructuressuchasreinforcementdetailforengineering

calculations• Assessmentofheritagestructures• Locatinganddefiningexistingundergroundutilities.• Locatingundergroundinfrastructureincludingstoragetanksandsoakwells

GBGMAPS offer a suite of investigative techniques to locate underground utilities. By combining non-invasive test methods including ground penetrating radar and electro-magnetics with known information and utility access pits, a subsurface infrastructure model can be generated. Physical exposure of identified utilities can be carried out using vacuum potholing to obtain a verified model. Together with our parent company MNG, we can carry out high level feature surveys integrating above ground and below ground infrastructure into a 3D survey package.

Structural Assessment

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) utilises a number of methods designed to non-invasively measure the internal properties and condition of engineered structures. NDT methods can be carried out on a wide range of building materials including concrete, masonry, timber and asphalt. NDT methods can be used for structural investigations to assess the as-built construction details, workmanship defects, degradation and the durability of construction.

GBGMAPS offers comprehensive testing on engineered structures with minimal intrusion or damage. By using NDT methods, together with targeted invasive testing, laboratory testing and visual inspection, a detailed condition assessment of a variety of engineered structures can be made including:

GBGMAPS Structural and Utility Assessment

As an active member of the National Utility Locating Contractors Association (NULCA), GBGMAPS is an industry leader in underground service and utility location. Together with parent company MNG, GBGMAPS carry out high resolution 3D feature surveys capturing both above ground and below ground assets.

GBGMAPS methodology for the classification of subsurface utility information meets and exceeds Australian Standards with a number of quality levels available depending on our client’s requirements. Typically an underground utility investigation includes:

• Pre-siteexaminationofexistingplansfromvarioussourcesincludingas-designedoras-builtplansandpublicallyavailableinformationsuchasDialBeforeYouDig

• Openingandinspectionofserviceaccesspitsforpipe/conduitdepths,orientationanddiameters

• Non-invasiveutilitydetectionusingGroundPenetratingRadarandElectro-magneticmethods• Verificationofidentifiedutilitieswithphysicalexposureusingvacuumpotholing

The data from the various phases of the investigation are combined into geospatial survey drawings for inclusion into most CAD software packages and visualisation software as required by the client.

GBGMAPS provides detection of underground utilities of various types including:

• Power(highandlowvoltage)cables• Telecommunications(copperandfibreoptic)• Potable,fireandrecycledwater• Sewer,stormwateranddrainage• Gas

In addition to utility location, GBGMAPS can accurately and effectively locate other below ground infrastructure including storage tanks, soak wells, footings and buried concrete slabs. This is particularly relevant to developments at brownfield sites including former petrol stations where remnant below ground infrastructure may be present after the removal of associated above ground infrastructure.
