At the June 2016 SEAONC Business Meeting I had the honor of presenting Natalie Tse and Rose McClure with the Edwin G. Zacher Award for their work in creating and leading the SE3 Project, now the SE3 Committee. SE3 stands for Structural Engineering, Equity, and Engagement, and was originally established as an ad hoc group in 2015 to study the non-technical barriers that can prevent structural engineers from succeeding in their chosen profession. The study particularly sought to focus on learning why engineers leave the structural engineering profession before reaching management positions, in particular women, who are leaving at a disproportionally higher rate compared to their male colleagues.

In a little over a year, the SE3 group developed a charter and a set of goals and then developed an online survey on the workplace environment in structural engineering firms. The survey included focused questions pertaining to issues such as work/life balance; pay; the effect of family life and professional activities on one’s career; how engineers are hired, promoted, and retained; why engineers left or considered leaving the profession; and other topics related to the workplace environment. After studying the answers from the over 2,000 engineers who took the survey, the SE3 group, now a fully charged committee, went to work on developing programs and initiatives to address the issues and concerns that the survey had identified. These initiatives have included:

• Organizing discussions and presentations on the survey results to structural engineering associations across the country.

• Organizing and presenting a symposium in San Francisco with panel discussions on the key issues that were raised by the survey results.

• Organizing “speed mentoring” events where engineers with less than five years of experience could meet with more experienced engineers and receive career advice.

Continued from p. 1

• Writing and publishing a best practices guide that could be used by engineering firm leaders to improve the workplace environment in their firms. This can be found at http://www.se3project.org/best-practices.html.

• Working with the Business Forum to organize seminars focusing on business training and project management that were tailored specifically for structural engineers.

• Creating a web site, http://www.se3project.org/, to publish the study findings and follow-up reports, and provide a forum for discussion of work environment issues.

• Producing a video that features structural engineers talking about the survey results, what structural engineers do, and why they joined the profession.

• Assisting other structural engineering associations, including NCSEA, with creating their own equity and engagement committees.

Under the leadership of SEAONC members Angie Sommer and Nick Sherrow-Groves, the NCSEA SE3 Committee developed a new equity and engagement survey that was sent out to structural engineers across the nation a few months ago. The committee is now processing the results and analyzing the data.

The SEAONC SE3 Committee has remained busy as well. A few weeks ago, the committee submitted a draft report to the Board of a comprehensive study of the pay data from the 2016 survey. The Board has reviewed the document and provided comments back to the committee. The SE3 Committee has also organized a work/life balance symposium and assembled a stellar panel of structural engineers to discuss the challenges that they have faced balancing their careers with their personal and family lives. Registration is now open for the event, which will be at Thornton Tomasetti’s San Francisco office on Thursday, October 11. I am very much looking forward to this event and I hope you will be able to join us.

I cannot begin to describe how amazed I am of the work that has been done by the SEAONC SE3 Committee. I have never been involved in a committee or group, SEAONC or otherwise, that has as many motivated and dedicated volunteers as they have. I particularly admire them for their courage. Personnel topics such as gender equity, retention, promotion, and work/life balance tend to be very difficult for us to discuss outside of closed-door meetings within our firms. They typically have not been discussed in the open very often, if at all. This silence could be interpreted as an indication that there are no industry wide issues, that there is nothing in fact to talk about. Perhaps there isn’t, but how do we know unless we have the courage to ask? How do we know how prevalent issues like gender equity and work/life balance are in our profession if those who are suffering from inequity or imbalance are too afraid to say anything and we are too afraid to ask them? I deeply admire the members of the SE3 Committee for having not only the courage to ask these questions, but also for having the courage to address the answers to those questions. Their courage has opened the doors to a long overdue discussion in our profession. I am proud to be the president of an association that has such motivated, dedicated, and courageous members.

SEAONC is pleased to report that we have launched a brand new website, which includes a new and improved design, a robust member profile tool, special tools for committees, an online searchable member directory, an interactive job board, and much more!

Current members should have received an email notice with instructions for how to log in, pay 2018/2019 dues and review/update their new member profile.

Buildings are typically designed by the Structural Engineer of Record for the final, fully-constructed condition with no consideration of the structural requirements during construction. Ensuring the stability and safety of the incomplete structure during construction is the responsibility of the contractor doing the work. For steel buildings, these responsibilities include staged construction analysis, design of temporary lateral bracing, lifting and stability of horizontal and vertical elements, temporary cantilever supports, general erection aids, and development of an erection procedure. This presentation will describe these tasks with examples from recent projects; discuss the standards and codes erection engineers utilize; and discuss simple and inexpensive ways for engineers of record to aid in the erection process during design.

Speaker: Keith D. Palmer, Simpson, Gumpertz and Heger

Keith Palmer is a senior structural engineer in the San Francisco office of Simpson, Gumpertz and Heger. Dr. Palmer has 14 years of experience as a practicing structural engineer. He earned his Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from Penn State, his M.S. in Structural Engineering from the University of Minnesota and his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of Washington. His doctoral research focused on the behavior, performance and design of buckling-restrained braced frames. His work as a practicing engineer has included new design of museums, churches and hospitals and seismic performance assessment and retrofit of existing buildings. Over the last four years, Dr. Palmer has performed the erection engineering for numerous projects in the Bay Area and throughout California including the Sacramento Kings Arena. He is the current Chair of the Existing Buildings Committee of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California and the Chair of the Non-Ductile Concrete Subcommittee.

Above and Below the Line: A Framework for Cultivating Conscious Leadership

Date: Wednesday, October 17, 2018Registration: 11:45 pm

Event: 12:00 pm - 2:00 pmLocation: HOK Conference Room,

1 Bush Street, Suite 200, San Francisco, CA 94104

Lunch Provided. Pre-registration is required.

Conscious leaders experience what is here now and respond in the moment. They are self-aware, tell themselves the truth, and aren’t trapped in old patterns. They are free to lead and serve others, the world, and themselves.

When we are leading consciously, we are responsive, creative, curious, and present. We see ourselves as having agency; we are open and available to growth and learning. In the opposite state, we are triggered, reactive, and defensive. We see ourselves as victims to our circumstances; we are invested in what we think we know and resistant to discovering new possibilities.

In this workshop, Gina Tesser Phelan will introduce us to “Above and Below the Line,” a simple, practicable framework that we can use at any time, in any given situation, to shift from a triggered, habitually reactive, and self-limiting (unconscious, below the line) state to one in which we are creative, responsive, courageous, and fully present (conscious, above the line). This framework comes to us from Jim Dethmer and Diana Chapman, founders of The Conscious Leadership Group and authors of The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership.

C O M M I T T E E N E W S

The Structural Engineering Engagement and Equity (SE3) committee has had a really great year. Biggest, the survey, which took up most of our time and effort for the past two years, was passed on to an NCSEA committee, allowing our committee to really focus on local engagement and equity initiatives. This year we have had two very successful speed mentorship events (which we plan to continue sponsoring) and we have been planning our fall Work-Life Balance: Perspectives and Real Life solutions panel discussion on Thursday October 11th - which is hopefully already on your calendars! We have also presented our 2015 survey results in multiple locations all over the country, including at the Cal Poly Structural Forum, Thornton Tomasetti’s Midtown New York office, the Structural Engineering Associations of Oklahoma and Montana, as well as via an NCSEA webinar. We hope that all of this outreach has gotten conversations started and has sparked other local SE3 chapters in some of these areas. I am very happy to introduce the co-chairs for the 2018-2019 year - Hayley Dickson will continue on as co-chair, joined by Zahraa Saiyed. I’m really excited for this duo to continue on this year with many additional new efforts. The committee is planning a more wide reaching diversity and inclusion initiative, while maintaining the mentorship efforts that we have been supporting for the last two years. Additionally, we anticipate that new survey results from the 2018 NCSEA survey will be released sometime this fall, which we hope to help guide further programs and discussion. I am honored to have been able to serve as co-chair of this committee for the past year. I want to thank everyone sincerely for all of their help and efforts over the last year – without the help of everyone our efforts this year wouldn’t have been possible. While everyone has really done wonderful things this last year, I want to specifically thank Hayley Dickson for being my co-chair this last year - it has been great working with you and I’m sure that you will continue to do great things this next year! I also want to thank the past committee chairs (Angie Sommer and Nick Sherrow-Groves) and the group’s founders (Natalie Tse and Rose McClure) for their guidance over the past year. Lastly, I want to encourage all SEAONC members to join us in our efforts. SE3 is here to promote change that benefits everyone in the structural engineering practice - everyone deserves to experience equity and to be engaged in what they do. That is why I am so incredibly excited to see where the new diversity and inclusion initiative takes us not just this next year, but in future years as well. This diversity will only strengthen our profession for years to come.
