Children in books of the nineteenth

century were often depicted as

examples of good and bad behaviour.

In December 1844 Heinrich Hoffman, a Frankfurt physician and writer, wanted to buy his three-year-old son a picture book as a Christmas present

but was not impressed by what was offered. Instead he bought a notebook and began to write

and draw his now famous picture book.

Struwwelpeter,Hoffmann's moral tales for

children - stories which tried to teach good manners and safety awareness - were translated into dozens of

languages and have deeply influenced children's

literature.

The stories and the illustrations were often fairly violent and shocking, and

perhaps are a good indication of society’s attitude to

children at that time. Physical and mental cruelty and

exploitation of children was not uncommon.

Hoffman’s tales of naughty children who did not do as they were told and paid the penalty are an early example of moral didactic – the teaching good manners and behaviour.

We can see the legacy of Hoffman’s work in Dennis the Menace, who challenges society’s rules but usually gets punished for it.

The Dreadful Story of Pauline and the Matches

Mamma and Nurse went out one day,And left Pauline alone at play;

Around the room she gayly sprung,Clapp'd her hands, and danced, and sung.,

Now, on the table close at hand,A box of matches chanced to stand,

And kind Mamma and Nurse had told her,That if she touched them they would scold her;

But Pauline said, "Oh, what a pity!
