MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
As we approach the final days of this momentous school year, I pause to reflect on the
celebrations that have taken place in the past week and the connections I have made
with many of you. These celebrations acknowledge student accomplishment and
personal growth, but they also instill a great sense of pride to be part of this thriving
community. Thank you to each of you for your commitment to excellence, your support
and enthusiasm. You have filled my heart with joy.
To our graduating class of 2019, I am excited for you as you embark on new adventures
and face different challenges to build on the character that you have developed during
your time as students at STS. I wish you well in your journey and look forward to hearing of
your accomplishments as alumni.
The tranquil energy that is developing on campus is a sign that some well-deserved time
away from daily routines is approaching. While I am eager for the new beginnings that
September brings, I wish each of you a wonderful summer filled with rejuvenation, fun
and happiness with those you love. I look forward to seeing you in the fall.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Carol Grant-Watt
Head of School

THANK YOU FOR VOLUNTEERING
Thank you to all the volunteers for another wonderful year!
The extent to which you support our children, the staff and the many STS events is
amazing. Without your help these activities would not be possible. Your contributions span
across all grades and encompass areas such as in-class helpers, athletics, graduations,
speech/debate tournaments, appreciation lunch and treats for teachers, as well as
performing and visuals arts (just to name a few). Volunteers also run Tweeds and More, the
Lost and Found and build a stronger STS community through the Welcome Coffee, New
Parent Committee, fundraising and the Homecoming Fall Fair.
I am proud to work with such a dedicated group of volunteers. Have a great summer and
we look forward to seeing you in September.

The STS Advancement Office is offering an opportunity for any recent STS grads who are still
in their university studies that will be job hunting for co-op or summer placements, or people
in their early-career stage looking to advance to a ’bigger’ role. It provides practical
advice and a methodical approach to networking, job searching, interviewing and
managing your digital footprint. It is particularly helpful for young adults with limited working
experience to present their skills and strengths in a compelling fashion.
Facilitated Workshops
This is a facilitated hands-on course consisting of four one-day workshops. It is educational,
interactive, and experiential. Participants should be prepared to complete a few hours of
guided preparation prior to each workshop and to be ready roll-up their sleeves when we
all meet.
Day 1: Resumes and Information Interviews
Day 2: Personal Brand Framework
Day 3: Digital Footprint including LinkedIn
Day 4: Cover Letters and Job Interviews
Benefits
Gain confidence, devote the required time, focus your energy, adopt a purposeful
approach and find fellowship with peers pursuing similar goals.
Course Facilitator: Linda Williams
Adept at facilitating contributors of all stripes toward a common end, Linda brings extensive
facilitation, branding, communications and marketing experience. Linda holds an MBA
from the University of Toronto as well as a Certificate in Facilitation (JIBC) and Teaching
Excellence Foundations (SAIT). She is certified as a Professional Facilitator from the
International Association of Facilitators.
Beginning in 2015, inspired by the classic Tom Peters “The Brand Called You” article, she
applied the discipline of corporate branding to personal branding. More recently, she
taught Marketing You at the SAIT School of Business to guide students who are launching
their careers.
In addition to teaching, Linda is a branding and marketing consultant with an emphasis on
developing value propositions (what you say), brand personality (how you say it) and

marketing plans (reaching the right audience in the right channel at the right time). More
recently, Linda has been collaborating with STS on their recent value proposition exercise
and ‘Say Yes To STS” advertising campaign.
UNIVERSITY PLANNING
Grade 12 Application Process
In University Planning class last week, we went over some important final tasks for the year:
All students who will be attending post-secondary in
the fall must order their final transcript from Alberta
Education via MyPass. If this step is missed, the
student will lose their conditional offer of admission.
STS has no way of tracking who has completed this
step, so it is incumbent upon each student to ensure
that it is completed before the school year ends. It is
also imperative that the students select the option
for the transcript to be sent after June exams rather
than immediately.
Mr. Ruskay came to class to preview how students go about ordering their IB grades
to be sent to universities. Full IB students must complete this step, and partial IB
students are encouraged to do so. There is no downside to sending the grades in,
and having them on file allows students to use advanced credit if they choose. In
some cases, universities may require these partial IB grades in the conditions of
admission. Mr. Ruskay has sent an email to students with written instructions as well.
Every Alberta student is eligible for funds through the Alexander Rutherford
Scholarship, if they had a 75% or higher average in any of their Senior School years.
To receive this money, the student must fill out the form in mid-July at
https://studentaid.alberta.ca/scholarships/alberta-scholarships/alexander-rutherford-
scholarship/how-to-apply/
If a student is concerned about meeting the conditions of an offer, they would be
wise to consider accepting a back-up offer that is less competitive as well. While this
has the downside of losing one deposit, it is worth it if the first choice offer is revoked
after diploma exam results and final grades are released (please note that students
can only hold one offer in the province of Ontario).
If they haven’t already done so, students should apply for residence as early in the
process as possible. Not every university has guaranteed residence for first year
students, and those that do also assign the best rooms first.
Grade 11 Application Preparation
______________________________________________________________________________________________________
STS EXPRESS – Weekly Newsletter Page | 17
As Grade 11 students near the end of the school year, there are a few items to keep in
mind for over the summer:
Several scholarship applications require that the student be nominated by their high school.
The nominees for these “High School Nominated Awards” are decided in September by a
panel of faculty members. To be considered, students must submit an application package
in the first week of Grade 12. The details will be previewed in our final University Planning
class next week, and an information package will be emailed to students and parents after
that.
There are some courses and universities that require entrance testing and/or preparation
over the summer. International, direct-entry medicine programs, U.S. colleges, as well as
Cambridge and Oxford all have entrance testing requirements. If you need information
about any of these processes, please book an appointment with Ms. Caines before classes
finish in June.
Any current Grade 11 student planning to submit international applications next year will
need to declare this intention in our University Planning class next week. This allows Ms.
Caines to ensure that they are doing the required work over the summer, as well as to plan
for letters of recommendation. International applications are a complex system and we
strongly encourage parents to be highly engaged in the process. Many deadlines occur as
early as October in the international application process.
All current Grade 11 students should enter Grade 12 with a short list of four to six universities
for each country to which they plan to apply. This list should be realistic to their academic
performance and consider the factors and values that we explored throughout University
Planning class in Grade 11.

WHAT’S HAPPENING ON CAMPUS
STS has a blog! Visit https://www.strathconatweedsmuir.com/blog/ for stories and what is
happening on campus. Be sure to bookmark this page! In addition to the blog, here are
some highlights this week:
HUMANITARIAN OUTREACH PROJECT (HOP) JOINS HANDS TO SUPPORT BROWN
BAGGING FOR CALGARY KIDS
Our Elementary Humanitarian Outreach Projects team (HOP) worked hard these past
months to support a local organization called Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids. We learned
that this brilliant organization brings food to 4,200 hungry kids each day in Calgary.
Volunteers travel to 220 schools in every quadrant of our city to deliver snacks and lunches
to students who don’t have the means to bring lunch with them during the day. HOP
members invited all of our PYP students to donate non-perishable snacks and money to this
cause. The HOP team has been busy decorating bags with messages of kindness and filling
them with delicious snacks. After weeks of dedication, we are happy to share that we
decorated and packed 1,150 snack bags and donated an additional $250 to Brown
Bagging for Calgary Kids. Way to go, HOP!
We hope this brings inspiration for all of us to look for ways to make the day a little brighter
for someone in need. Enjoy taking action this summer!
