TODAY’S READINGS Sunday, October 20 First Reading—As long as Mo-ses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the be er of the fight. Exodus 17:8-13 Second Reading—Remain faith-ful to what you have learned and believed. 2 Timothy 3:14—4:2 Gospel—Will not God secure the rights of His chosen ones who call out to Him day and night? Luke 18:1-8
PERSEVERANCE In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives a clever exam-ple of why we are to persevere in praying, even if we think the prayer is not being heard. The crooked judge just wanted to get that widow off his back. So we can pray to God with even more confidence because we know that God loves us and will answer our prayers. St. Paul carries that theme of perseverance even further. He is not just talking about prayer here; he encourages Timothy to persevere in pro-claiming God’s word as well. That command we may find more challenging than prayer. He tells Timothy (and us!) to “convince, reprimand and encourage through all pa-
ence and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2). How can we do that? “Convince” reminds me that our faith should be reasonable. Jesus’ com-mand to love one another, for instance, can be taught much more convinc-ingly by giving examples of love. A mother who hugs her child when he is hurt and encourages him when he feels lost is teaching that command in a way that will be remembered much longer than just telling him to love people. Paul also talks about reprimanding each other. Most people find it diffi-cult to reprimand someone they are in charge of, much less one who is equal in status. That’s where pa ence comes in. A reprimand can be made pa ently and gently, as a sign of concern rather than authority. Paul lastly men ons teaching. Parents can do their part by teaching the stories from the Bible, helping children to see God in crea on, teaching them to pray and being good examples of God’s love for them. If you send your children to religion classes or the parish school, do what you can to support the teachers so that what the children learn at school is prac ced at home. What the children see (or don’t see) at home has a much greater effect than a few hours a week in a classroom. Tom Schmidt
PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS O loving and gracious God, Father of all, You bless Your people in every
me and season and provide for their needs through Your providen al care. Your Church is con nually in need of priests, sisters and brothers to offer themselves in the service of the Gospel by lives of dedicated love. Open the hearts of Your sons and daughters to listen to Your call in their lives. Give them the gi of understanding to discern Your invita on to serve You and Your Church. Give them the gi of courage to follow Your call. May they have the spirit of young Samuel who found fulfillment in his life when he said to You, "Speak Lord, for Your servant is listening." Bless those who are serving now with courage and perseverance. Grant that many will be inspired by their example and faith. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although the hours of daylight are rapidly dwindling, many people would say that these October days bring the year’s most splendid weather. Ameri-cans are riders and joggers, not strollers, and so the pleasures of the season are o en lost on us. This is not the case with many Jewish people, who ob-serve an ancient rule in walking to synagogue on the Sabbath. On city streets and suburban sidewalks in many ci es, we may no ce around sunset the nicely dressed families walking and cha ng on Friday a ernoon. A er a short prayer at dusk, the families stroll home again for a relaxing and fes ve meal. They return to synagogue in the morning and then spend an a ernoon in family leisure un l three stars appear in the night sky and Sabbath ends. Catholics, on the other hand, pile into the car and drive even a short dis-tance to Mass; some even divide the family to par cipate at different hours. For Jews, the leisurely walk marks a dividing line between hec c life commit-ments and a day of abundant joy and enrichment. Before we became an auto-mobile culture, Catholics embraced a similar pace, and in most places walked to church. These lovely days of fall invite us to tap into an old and life-giving tradi on. If you live within a mile of your church, walk next week. If you must drive, park at a good distance and walk the rest of the way. Talk about your life, greet strangers, no ce the crunch of leaves under your shoes. You may be surprised at how different Sunday Mass feels when it is framed by leisure! James Field

POPE JOHN PAUL II—OCTOBER 22 1920 - 2005: When this popular pope died, crowds in St. Peter’s Square chanted “santo subito” (“sainthood now”). The Va can heard, and the sainthood cause for the jet-se ng pon ff who helped bring down European communism was put on the fast track; he was bea fied in 2011. A Pole and former actor shaped by World War II and the Cold War, Car-dinal Karol Wojtyla of Krakow was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. In his 26-year pon ficate, he evangelized on trips to 129 countries, upheld tradi onal church doctrine against dissent, connected with the world’s youth, and named more than 450 new saints. He also modeled Chris an values by forgiving his would-be assassin and living an increasingly frail old age in public. He was can-onized in 2014.
JOHN OF CAPISTRANO—OCTOBER 23 1386 - 1456: This Italian studied law in Perugia, where he married the daughter of a leading family and became gover-nor of the city in 1412. Imprisoned during a civil war, he had a vision of St. Francis, followed by a spiritual conversion. Dispensed from his marriage vows, John joined the Friars Minor in 1416 and was ordained four years later. Going barefoot and wearing a hair shirt, he became a great preacher, worked diligently to reform the Franciscan orders, served as the friars’ vicar general and was named papal legate in a number of places in Europe and Pales ne. He also led a wing of the Chris an army in a victory against the Turks who besieged Belgrade in 1456. John is the patron of jurists and military chaplains.
ANTHONY MARY CLARET—OCTOBER 24 1807-1870: Ini ally a weaver like his father, Anthony be-came a secular priest in 1835 but hoped to join a religious order. He became a Jesuit novice in Rome, but failing health prompted his return to Spain. For 10 years he conducted missions in his na ve Catalonia, before founding the Con-grega on of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, or Clare ans, in 1849. Even when he was archbishop of San ago, Cuba, and chaplain to Spain’s Queen Isabella II, Anthony was commi ed to the Clare ans’ mission of evangeli-za on, especially through publishing.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT If we want to know what Jesus’ parable is about in today’s Gospel, it seems that we don’t need to work too hard because Saint Luke tells us right at the beginning: “Jesus told His disciples a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart.” This parable has o en been used to bring comfort to us about our prayer life. But could there be a more challenging message for those who take stewardship seriously? Widows were the poorest and most vulnera-ble of people in Jesus’ me. Oppressive legal and economic structures were the norm. Jesus embraced with great compassion the poor and the marginal-ized. Could it be that we are also encouraged to pray persistently for the poor, the weak and the vulnerable as we hear their cry for jus ce? And that we must not lose heart that we can effect change in their lives?
