Earlier Life

Stuart’s Dad: His father was the art editor for the Philadelphia Press.

Stuart’s Mom: His mother was a sculpture. He grew up in an artistic family which influenced his career

in art.

Both of his parents went to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

Artwork Stuart was a modern artist and focused on Cubism and

abstract and even a little Pop-art. In fact, Stuart kind of created a new form of U.S.

Cubism.

MediumStuart really didn’t paint, but used oils on canvas.

The Armory Show

Five pieces done in watercolor by Stuart Davis were in the Armory Show which is held in New York. The year was 1913 and Stuart was one of the youngest artists to have

work in this show. (He was 21 years old.)

Painter

“I paint what I see in America, in other words I paint the American scene.” Stuart Davis quotes that as

well as writing in his journal, “Starting now I will begin a series of

paintings that shall be rigorously logical American, not French.

America has had her scientist, her inventors, now she will have her

artist.”Stuart was truly an American

painter.

ATeacher

In the 1930’s, Stuart was a teacher in Gloucester,

Massachusetts at the Art Student’s League.
