The RISE program supportsthe RoaDS Research Club.The club provides authenticgroup research experiencesfor freshmen and sophomoresin the sciences. Student Accomplishments

Bertina Telusma and Joshua Kellyreceived awards for their posterpresentations at aBRCmS in Seattle, Wa,Nov 11-15, 2015. Joshua spent the summerin Dr. Chady Hakim’s lab at University ofmissouri, studying Duchenne musculardystrophy, and Bertina carried outresearch at massachusetts Institute ofTechnology (mIT) in Dr. David Page’s labstudying proteins interacting with STRa8.KeiAuyndria Edwards received a fulltravel award to present at aBRCmS.Keiauyndria presented research on Hut78 T cell activation, conducted at theUniversity of Iowa, summer 2015.

Bertina Telusma, has accepted an offer tocomplete a research internship at mIT forspring 2016 after completing a summerinternship there. The internship issupported by mIT, Barry University andthe RISE grant.

Diana Cordero, having completed asummer internship at Dauphin Island SeaLab (DISL), 2015, was nominated torepresent the DISL ResearchUndergraduate Experience (REU)program, and also to present her researchat the american Society of Luminologyand oceanography, Feb 20-26, 2016.

Kamren Livingston (RISE-Biology)attended the mIT Department of Biologyworkshop on quantitative biology,January 2-9, 2016, in Cambridge, ma. Thesix-day workshop included daily facultylectures (in genetics, biochemistry, cellbiology and statistics), followed byrelevant hands-on activities, researchseminars by graduate students oncutting-edge methods and daily sessionson critical evaluation of scientific papers.

Michelle Aznarez (former maRC/RISE technicalcoordinator) tied the knot with Lazaro Cuervo November 6, 2015. michelle is completing therequirements toward the PhD in Educational Leadership with a focus on Special Education.

Dr. Teresa Petrino-Lin, associateProfessor, and Dr. Yu-Wai Peter Lin, Professordelivered a presentation on “Undergraduate ResearchPractices at a Small University.”

american Society for Cell Biology (aSCB) annualmeeting Dec 12-18, 2015 in San Diego, Ca. Dr. LeticiaVega, associate Professor, delivered a posterpresentation on her ongoing research in telomeres.

Dr. Tamara Hamilton mentored 3 of her researchstudents to The International Chemical Congress ofPacific Basin Societies 2015, Dec 15-20, 2015 inHonolulu, HI, as they presented research from her labon the greener synthesis of porphyrin molecules bygrinding. Porphyrin are biologically-relevantmolecules that can currently only be synthesized insmall yields, by using large amounts of solvent.

In october 2015, Dr. george Fisher, Professor, was re-elected for a 3-year term at Executive Treasurer ofgamma Sigma Epsilon National Chemistry HonorSociety.

Dr. Xiaotang Hu, Professor, and Dr. Laura mudd, Chair,coeditted and published a book titled “The world ofbiological molecules through the eyes and hands ofundergraduate students” September 2015, ISBNNumber: 1943955166, green Ivy Publishing, Chicago,Illinois.

During the fall 2015 semester Dr. Hu completed hissabbatical at the College of Life Sciences, NanjingNormal University, China. During the sabbatical hetaught a graduate level course “Signal Transduction,”

designed by Dr. Hu to meet the college’s objective ofteaching students in English. Dr. Hu gave two specialpresentations titled “Signal Transduction, Cell Cycleand Cancer” to undergraduate students. He attendedone PI’s (Dr. Liu Chang) lab meetings weekly anddiscussed the preliminary research data on the livermetabolism and biological clock presented by thegraduate students in the PI’s lab. By giving a specificpresentation to the faculty of the Institute ofmolecular Cell Biology in this college, Dr. Huintroduced general information about Barry Universityand its education system. Dr. Hu also presented at theCollege of Public Health, Central South University,China, “my teaching and research at Barry University”in response to their invitation (Changsha, Hunan,China, November 19, 2015). Dr. Hu also attended onenational (Nanjing, Jiangsu, China, october 17-18, 2015)and one regional (Nanjing, Jiangsu, China, November28-29) biology research meeting during the sabbatical.
