Summerall, former chief of staff of the Army and President of The Citadel from 1931-53. The Summerall Guards exemplify the skill and precision of military education. The 61 members and two alternates each year earn a place on the platoon through rigorous competition during spring of their Junior Year. Guard members are selected by the outgoing guards, and membership in the platoon is considered a high honor. The exhibition drill staged by the Summerall Guards is known as The Citadel Series and consists of various complex close-order drill movements, including variations of the standard manual of arms, the German Squad Movement, the flank by flank, obliques, successive peeling movements, and varied individual squad maneuvers. The drill is silent and automatic except for an occasional “sound off” in unison by members of the platoon. The platoon drills with Springfield 1903 Rifles, with fixed bayonets. The 2012 Summerall Guards have performed at Corps Day in March 2011, Graduation in May 2011, Clemson in September 2011, Parents Day in October 2011, Homecoming in November 2011, Columbia Christmas Parade in December 2011, and Mardi Gras in February 2012. Citadel Wins 2012 ASCE Robert Ridgway National Award for Best Chapter

Civil Engineering students are winners of the 2012 ASCE Robert Ridgway Award, recognizing The Citadel as the most outstanding Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. ASCE’s national committee on student activities determines the winning school through a rigorous review process based on evaluation of a comprehensive annual report prepared by student officers. The Citadel was selected as the top school from a field of 25,000 students at 281 colleges and universities across the US and 11 countries. 2012 marks the first time in school history The Citadel received this prestigious award.

“Winning the Ridgway Award is a monumental achievement, and it is honor to accept this recognition on behalf of The Citadel. This unprecedented accomplished was the result of great student teamwork and a uniquely supportive learning environment within the Civil Engineering Department. It is great to be part of Citadel history in attaining this renowned award through many years of hard work,” said Clay Settle, Citadel ASCE Student Chapter President.

The Citadel ASCE chapter has over 100 active members, held 27 professional meetings, organized seven field trips, and participated in major events such as the Workshop for Student Leaders in Portland, Maine, Battery to Beach Service Project, Citadel Science Night, provided numerous professional presentations, and contributed countless volunteer hours to the department, institution, profession and community. The Citadel ASCE Chapter also hosted National Engineer’s Week events on campus and organized a professional activities event attracting 21 companies to a career fair for engineering students. “The Ridgway Award is civil engineering’s Academy Award for students as the top award for student performance and achievement. Engineering Team Wins Robotics Contest's Rookie of the Year: June 3-6, 2011

Being a rookie has its ups and down, but for a group of engineering students, it's quite a fete. The Citadel's Team CLETIS stunned an international robotics competition by taking the Rookie of the Year award. The students took part in the 19th annual Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition held June 3-6, 2011 at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. The competition is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students from around the world to design and build an autonomous ground vehicle capable of completing several difficult challenges. "Twenty one of the 57 entries from the U.S., Canada, Japan and Europe qualified to compete, of which at least 5 had rookie status. Rookie status is determined by past qualification, so some of the other rookies had tried before but this was their first year to qualify," said John Peeples, head of the electrical and computer engineering department in The Citadel School of Engineering. "Team CLETIS was a true rookie team, this being the first year the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering participated." The Citadel competed against the likes of Georgia Tech, Johns Hopkins University, the U.S. Naval Academy, Rutgers University, University of Texas and Virginia Tech. Sponsors included several Department of Defense agencies, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics Land Systems and Joint Ground Robotics Enterprise. The robot, named CLETIS for Citadel Engineered Traversing Intelligent System, is an autonomous navigation robot. It had to traverse a hilly grassland course spread over an area the size of a football field while making navigational decisions based solely on input from its surroundings. The robot had to navigate the course with no human guidance, while staying in marked lanes and avoiding obstacles. "These students have spent many long hours and late nights designing, building and programming this amazing robot," said Mark McKinney, the team's faculty advisor. "They went toe-to-toe with some outstanding engineering programs, many with years of experience in this particular competition, and once again proved that The Citadel has some of the best electrical engineering students in the nation.
