Overview of Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences, Hiroshima University

Health Sciences Major (Doctoral Course)

1. Purpose In recent years, science and technology have developed rapidly in Japan, along with its economic growth. As specialization progressed in the fields of health sciences and medicine, researchers with advanced expertise and skills are demanded in each field today. In particular, rapid advent of an aging society combined with the diminishing number of children brought changes in the disease structure, and therefore more complex diseases and their treatments have become a major social issue. Considering this background, two courses have been established for the following purposes: Division of Nursing Science: This division is designed to develop researchers and educators in nursing science who can study and develop theories and practices from an international perspective. Division of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Sciences: This division is designed to develop educators with advanced expertise and high research skills beyond the conventional study framework of physiotherapy and occupational therapy, as well as researchers/developers for establishing the academic discipline. 2. Overview of Health Sciences Major In this major, two divisions are designed to organically interact with each other. It is aimed to grow practitioners who succeed in the field of health care, instructors in medical or other facilities, educators, and researchers, by offering a wide range of basic knowledge and advanced expertise in each field. 3. Curriculum (1) Characteristics ○ To obtain the degree, students are required to earn knowledge and capability suitable for independently continuing study in the

field of their major. They will receive efficient instructions appropriate to achieve it. ○ “Special Lectures or Seminars on Special Topics” is designed to nurture high expertise in individual research subjects while

“Special Research” is designed to support research and academic writing that are essential for preparing a doctoral thesis within the research subjects of students.

○ Research instruction will be provided by the chief academic supervisor and assistant academic supervisors. ○ To complete the program within the designated term (three years as standard), the processes are presented in a standard schedule

as a guideline. ○ To facilitate smooth development of a thesis, a preliminary review board is established within each major, to check (instruct)

progress in each step, from setting a research subject to developing a research plan and completing a thesis. (2) Conditions for completion ○ In principle, students should earn designated credits (12 credits or more described below) by participating in the program for three

years or longer, submit a doctoral thesis during the enrollment after receiving necessary research instructions, and pass the review and final examinations.

If, however, a student is recognized by the faculty meeting of Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences to have made excellent research achievement, a minimum of one year of enrollment may be enough (three years in total with the Master’s Course or Doctoral Course first Semester for those who completed such a course in less than two years).

○ Acquisition of designated credits •Common subjects: (Compulsory) 2 credits •Lecture of the academic supervisor (special lecture): (Compulsory) 2 credits •Seminar of the academic supervisor (seminar on a special topic): (Compulsory) 2 credits •Special research: (Compulsory) 4 credits •Lectures, common subjects etc. of teaching staff other than the academic supervisor: (Compulsory elective) 2 credits or more

(3) Degree According to the Academic Degree Regulations (Ordinance of the Ministry of Education No. 9 in 1953), students who completed this program will be granted a doctoral degree (health science) or a doctoral degree (nursing science). A doctoral degree (nursing science) can be granted only if a student takes a special research course of an supervisor qualified as a nurse. 4. Career Path after Completion Those who complete this course can work as, for example, educators of nursing science, physiotherapy, and/or occupational therapy in colleges/universities, administrators/instructors in health facilities and other institutions, researchers in research organizations, or specialists in international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). 5. Laboratories & Research Topics These are summarized in the table of the next page.
