3) Social Events Holiday Party (November 24th, 2018): The Laurentian University SEG Student Chapter hosted a holiday party for all members of the Harquail School of Earth Sciences. Approximately 50 people attended. Students participating in the spring trip to Ireland helped fundraising by organizing a raffle of items donated by local businesses. Rock Sale (January 17th, 2019): A fundraising committee composed of 4 students attending the LU-SEG’s spring field trip to Ireland organized a rock and mineral sale at Laurentian University in support of the Ireland trip. Samples were donated by students, professors, local geologists, and local collectors. The rock sale was an incredible success and helped raise approximately $1,650 as well as help raise the profile of our SEG chapter and department within Laurentian University as a whole. Website: Th LU-SEG chapter website was launched in 2016 and was maintained for the 2018-2019 school year by LU-SEG chapter member Luc Roy. On the website (luseg.ca) are photos from our field trips, contact information, and information about our upcoming field trips. 4) Future Plans 2019-2020: A general meeting was called to elect the new executive members for the academic year 2019-2020. The following were elected:

President : Charlotte Stone ([email protected]) Vice-President : David Downie ([email protected] Treasurer : Colin Ross ([email protected]) Secretary: Patrick Bovingdon ([email protected])

Field Trips: For the next academic year, the SEG student chapter has two main field trips planned and several smaller local trips:

Fall 2019 - Wawa and the North Shore of Lake Huron:

The 2019-2020 LU-SEG student chapter is planning a 5-day field trip on 15-19 October 2019 to the town of Wawa and the North Shore of Lake Huron to examine current and past mining activities in the area. The field trip will take place during Laurentian University’s fall break week. The itinerary is as follows: Day 1: Tour of Cameco’s Blind River uranium refinery; tour of closed uranium mine sites in Elliot Lake

with Denison Environmental; drive to Wawa Day 2: Day spent with Red Pine Exploration looking at core, outcrops, and trenches from their Wawa

gold project Day 3: Surface mine tour at Alamos’s Island Gold mine Day 4: Drive to Blind River with regional geology stops along the way including kimberlites, greenstone

belt outcrops, and carbonatites Day 5: Tour of Elliot Lake area geology with a local retired geologist; drive back to Sudbury

Spring 2020 – Colombia:

The LU-SEG is planning an international field trip 13 days in length to the mining districts of the country of Colombia on 14-26 February 2020.

Colombia is a world leader in porphyry gold production as well as gem-quality emeralds, and offers a geological setting very different from Sudbury and the rest of the Canadian Shield. The differences in geological setting are highlighted by deposit types different from those encountered in Sudbury, as well as different mining practices associated with these deposits. For many students, this will be their first experience examining porphyry deposits (and open pit mines) and gemstone deposits in the field, and the large-scale tectonic settings of the deposits down to the small-scale mineralogical and structural controls of deposits will be explored. Colombia also provides an opportunity to examine relatively young deposits compared to the older, more metamorphosed, and often more deformed deposits that occur in the Canadian Shield.

Itinerary:

Day 1 (Feb 14th): Drive from Sudbury to Toronto; fly from Toronto to Medellin Day 2: Intro day in Medellin

• Granite monolith (El Penon de Guatape) hike • Intro lecture on Colombian geology/ore deposits at EAFIT Universidad • Meet up with local SEG chapter for dinner

Days 3-8: Au-porphyry and VMS deposits/mines

• Deposits we are contacting include: Buritica, Cisneros, Titiribi, El Roble, Quinchia, La Colosa, and Jerico

• Will also include one free day in the Pereira area to do a coffee tour Day 9: Drive to Zipaquira; Zipaquira salt dome

Day 10: Gachala emerald deposits/mines

Day 11: Chivor emerald mine

Day 12: Free day in Bogota

• Meet up with local SEG chapter Day 13 (Feb 26th): Fly back to Toronto

5) Fundraising programs for the 2018-2019 year:

Transportation for the fall field trip in the Sudbury area was generously donated by Metal Earth.

The executive committee successfully managed to raise approximately CAD$14,000 from industry and academic sponsors for the Ireland trip, including funds from the SEG Stewart R. Wallace program. The money was used to cover accommodation, transportation, insurances, and medical examinations.

Aside from industry and academic sponsors, a fundraising committee of several students attending the Ireland trip was formed in September 2018. They successfully organised collected donations, organised raffles, sales, and other events in order the raise funds for the Ireland trip, and another committee will be started for fundraising in 2019-2020. The final cost for each student participating in the Ireland trip amounted to CAD$500 - less than the cost of a roundtrip flight from Toronto to Dublin. 6) Acknowledgements

Besides the already mentioned companies and organisations, the LU-SEG Chapter sincerely thanks:

Drs. Aoife Brady and Murray Hitzman of ICRAG for their generous support and guidance on the Ireland spring trip

Dr. Elizabeth Turner and Dr. David Broughton for their participation and assistance in the Ireland spring trip

Dr. Bruce Jago

Dr. Dave Burrows

Tobias Roth

Thank you for your constant support of our student chapter and the opportunities we have brought to students this past academic year. We hope that the next year, and years to come at Laurentian will bring just as many chances for industry-based learning to the next generation of economic geologists. Accounting for previously obtained Stewart Wallace funds (2018-2019)

In 2018, the LU-SEG student chapter was awarded $500 USD from the Stewart R. Wallace fund during second

round funding. These funds went towards flights for the February, 2019 trip to the Zn-Pb districts of the Irish

midlands. The following table provides a summary of expenses from the Ireland field trip:
