Basis for FundingAwards are generally based on scholastic

achievement and financial need. All students are encouraged to apply for as many scholarships as possible, to lessen their need for loans or part time work to attend school.

Some awards are based on Distinct Qualifications: qualities like leadership, community service, hardship, and academic achievement in addition to financial need.

CSU Doctoral Incentive ProgramLends participants who are full-time doctoral

students up to $10,000 annually to a limit of $30,000 over a five-year period. The recipients may enroll in any approved doctoral program, at an accredited university in the United States or abroad.

After completion of the doctoral degree, a DIP participant is extended a 12-month grace period before loan repayments begin. If the participant obtains a full-time instructional faculty position in the CSU, the loan principal and interest are "forgiven" at the rate of 20% for each year of service. After five years of full time faculty service, the entire loan amount can be forgiven.

What is Missing?Prior opportunities are wonderful, but require

advanced knowledge of need, considerable amounts of paperwork, and a long lag period

Faculty often have excellent students, who would benefit from giving a presentation at a conference, local or national

Development of a mechanism for funding by students for students that sets criteria, includes evaluation, and is promoted by the faculty would fill a void and promote advanced learning
