8 About Croatia

About Croatia

The Republic of Croatia is an independent country in South Eastern Europe with its capital in Zagreb. Having a population of over 4.5 million, Croatia lies at the Eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea with its hinterland stretching to the slopes of the Alps and deep into the Pannonian lowlands, to the banks of the Danube and Drava Rivers. It consists of three geographic regions: the Mediterranean, the Mountainous and the Pannonian region. In the west of the country Croatia borders on the Italian Adriatic, in the northwest and north on Slovenia, in the north and northeast on Hungary. In the east it borders on the Province of Vojvodina (within Serbia), in the south on Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in the far south on Montenegro.

Though a small country, Croatia is defined by diverse cultural influences that resulted in distinctive architecture and a rich stew of traditions. It is well known by its beautiful Adriatic coast, however, traditional atmosphere as well as the beauty of the landscape can be observed in the continental Eastern region of our country, named Slavonia and Baranja. Osijek is the capital of Slavonia and Baranja. A convenient geographical location on the rivers of Drava and Danube makes Osijek a political, cultural, educational and industrial centre.

battles that took place here, deciding the destiny of the whole region. After migrating, the Croats made a settlement near the ruins of Mursa, giving it its present name, Osijek. The first precise mention of this name can be found in the Papal list from 1332, with a precise mention of Osijek parish. Life was thriving here in the Middle Ages, but only traces

Historical Overview The history of Osijek goes back to

Neolithic times and begins with the first known inhabitants who belonged to the Illyrian tribes. Later on, in 331, the Roman emperor Hadrian raised the old settlement of Mursa to a colony with special privileges. After that, Mursa had a turbulent history, with a lot of decisive

of that life can be found today, because the Turks destroyed everything they found and built a town to suit their style. The Turks built several important buildings and mosques here, including Suleiman the Magnificent’s famous 8 km.-long wooden bridge, considered to be one of the wonders of the world. After liberation from the Turks in 1687, Osijek was once again completely devastated. Between 1712 and 1721, the new Austrian authorities built a new fortress, today known as Tvrđa. It is a unique urban and military complex that lies in the heart of the town. Its central Holy Trinity Square is bound on the north by the Building of the Military Command, today the seat of the Rector and the Agricultural Faculty. On the west there is the Main Guard Building, and on the east the Magistrate Building, presently the Museum of Slavonia. In the middle, there is a Plague Monument, erected in 1729.

of Osijek

The three parts of the town, the Lower Town, Tvrđa, and the Upper Town were united in 1786, and Osijek became the administrative centre of the Slavonia region. In 1779, a new wooden bridge was built across the Drava River, connecting Osijek with Hungary and the rest of Central Europe. Upper Town became the new business centre of the town.

Osijek was heavily damaged during the Homeland War, 1991-1995. The peaceful reintegration of Eastern Slavonia and Baranja was successfully completed, opening the way to the revival of our city and the whole region.

a city of multicultural and multiethnic community.

We’ll take you on a little walk through the city streets, squares and parks...

Let’s start from the centre, Ante Starčević Square, located in the Upper Town, which is the administrative and business centre of Osijek. Most buildings date from the late 19th and early 20th century. The Concathedral consecrated to St. Peter and Paul is drawing your attention with its impressive size. It was built at the end of the 19th century in the Neo-Gothic style. Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, after whom our University is named, supported its construction.

Osijek Today Osijek is the administrative and

economic centre of Eastern Croatia, situated on the right bank of the Drava River, 25 km upstream from its mouth into the Danube. Osijek has also convenient geographical location at the crossroads to Hungary, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, thus being

Vukovar Vukovar is situated about 30 kilometers

to the east of Osijek, where the Vuka River enters the Danube. The city is on the borders of Slavonia and Sirmium regions. Unfortunately, it is widely known by its war sufferings and destructions. Today after years of war Vukovar is revived and rebuilt, and it is offering to visitors a great blend of Danube scenery and historical sites. Worth mentioning is the archaeological site of Vučedol, located along the banks of the Danube, some 5 kilometres downstream from Vukovar. This is one of the most significant sites of the Eneolithic period. This Eneolithic culture was named after its place of origin – the Vučedol culture.

when the Zagreb Faculty of Economics, in accordance with the University of Zagreb, founded the Centre for part-time studies in Osijek as a branch of the Zagreb Faculty of Economics.

The initiative for the founding of the University of Osijek dates back to 1975. On 26 March 1975, the Croatian Parliament (Sabor) passed the Decision

A Short History of Higher Education in Osijek

The history of higher education in this area began almost three centuries ago, i.e. in 1707, when the first institution of higher education was founded in Osijek. It was the Higher Theological School, which was opened in the 1707/1708 academic year as Studium Philosophicum Essekini, and included a three-year course of studies in philosophy.

The significance of the first colleges in Osijek lies in their huge contribution to Croatian language and literature, the spreading of liberal-arts education, and the study of languages and classical literature.

The recent history of higher education in the area began in 1959

and in the same year, the University Senate passed the Decision to include the name of Josip Juraj Strossmayer in the name of the university. Joseph George Strossmayer, (Croatian: Josip Juraj) was bishop and theologian, politician and statesman. He was one of the most famous Croats in the world, known as a promoter of Croatian culture and the people’s tribune, whose entire life was devoted to advancing the welfare and progress of Croatian people. He was born on February 4, 1815 in Osijek, died April 8, 1905 in akovo. Strossmayer was a true predecessor of modern ecumenical quests for unification and open dialogue, and he strove for unity and cooperation despite differences, casting away centuries of misunderstanding and conflict. His personality, ideas, broad viewpoints, global reasoning and his overall legacy have been recognized and followed even today in the mission of the University of Osijek.

We need to point out that the academic year 1991/1992 began in wartime Croatia. We must emphasize that the University of Osijek was the only university in Croatia that suffered severe damage in the war for independence.

granting consent for the establishing the University of Osijek. Two months later, on 31 May 1975, the Agreement concerning the founding of the University of Osijek was signed by the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Processing, the Institute of Agriculture, the Zagreb School of Engineering and Naval Architecture for Engineering Studies in Slavonski Brod, the Teacher Training College in Osijek, the Zagreb Music Academy for the Music Department in Osijek, the City Library and the Historical Archives in Osijek. Therefore, we celebrate 31 May as the day when the University of Osijek was founded.

In this brief outline we need to point out several important years in the history of the founding of the various faculties of the University of Osijek: in 1975 the Faculty of Law, in 1976 the Faculty of Food Technology, in 1977 the Faculty of Education, in 1979 the School of Engineering in Slavonski Brod and Medical Studies in Osijek, which developed into the Faculty of Medicine in 1998, in 1982 the Faculty of Civil Engineering, in 1990 the Electrical Engineering Studies developed into the Faculty of Electrical Engineering,

Eastern Slavonia is the most important agricultural area in the Republic of Croatia, so that the development of the Faculty of Agriculture in Osijek is of great importance for future progress of the land.

The High Agricultural School in Osijek was founded in 1960 as a member of the University of Zagreb. Studies were organised in two groups – Field Crops Production and Live Stock Breeding, for

Faculty of both full-time and part-time students. In 1969 a four-year study introducing the Food Technology Programme was founded. The High Agricultural School changed its name to the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Technology and was divided into two institutions, i.e. the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Food Technology. After that, together with the Institute of Agriculture, they became a part of the Biotechnical

Visa requirements and residence permit

After processing you application, you will be issued an official Letter of Acceptance and a Confirmation of Accommodation. These documents will be needed for regulation of your visa or residence permit.

All exchange students who intend to

stay in Croatia longer than 90 days, i.e. three months are obliged to obtain a student visa before entering Croatia or to regulate the Residence Permit upon arrival.

It is strongly advisable for all exchange students to contact Croatian Embassy or consular office in their home country and to apply for a student visa. Officers there will provide all necessary information about student visa regulations. List of Croatian embassies and consular offices abroad can be found at http://www.mfa.hr/MVP.asp?pcpid=1613

Residence permit can be also obtained in Croatia upon students’ arrival. For the regulation of the permit you will need the following documents:

1. Form 1a (http://www.mup.hr/1266.aspx)

2. Acceptance letter issued by the University of Osijek

3. 1 photo in colour (35x45mm)

4. Copy of the passport – page with the photo

5. Certificate of non-criminal record issued by authorised representative in your home country - not older than 6 months, translated into Croatian by a court interpreter

6. Proof of sufficient means of subsistence (scholarship confirmation, statement of bank account)

7. Proof of secured accommodation – Confirmation of accommodation issued by University of Osijek if you will be staying in the dormitory. In case of private accommodation, you will need a contract of rent and a proof of ownership.

All documents need to be translated into Croatian and certified by a public notary.

Please, have in mind that regulation of your residence permit in Croatia lasts sometimes quite long, for more than a month, and without regulated temporary stay you cannot be officially registered as exchange student at the University of Osijek.

BeforeLeaving Home

Page 92: Student Guide Erasmus 2011/2012

90 Before Leaving Home

• You should possess an international travel and health insurance issued by an insurance company in your home country. Such insurance must include repatriation coverage (the cost of the healthcare service is covered by the student, who will later be refunded by the insurance company).

• You can regulate your health insurance upon arrival in Osijek at the Croatian Health Institute (www.hzzo-net.hr). Such insurance costs 400 HRK per month (approx. 54EUR) and entitles you to use all medical services that are available to Croatian citizens.

Health insurance

All exchange students must have health insurance during their stay in Croatia.

There are several options for regulating your health insurance:

• If you are coming from a country that has closed an international agreement on health security with the Republic of Croatia, you are entitled to use the emergency health care services during your temporary stay in Croatia. Before coming to Croatia, you should check with your health insurance provider at home under which conditions you can use your home health insurance in Croatia. If possible, your health insurance provider will issue a relevant document, which you should bring with you to Osijek. Upon arrival you will be assisted in contacting the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance, in order to replace the certificate attesting your right to use the health care with a paper-based health insurance record card (Croatian: bolesnički list).

Going out…

Night life of the city of Osijek is very dynamic. There is a lot to choose from. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays are the days to go out. However, you can always go to the cinema, the theatre, a gallery or just walk along the river. If you want to have a cup of coffee, we suggest some of the most popular cafes, like Cappucino, Brooklyn and Sunset, all of which are situated along the river, or on the Radic Street near the Faculties of Law and Economics. Popular meeting points are the Old Bridge Pub, Irish pubs St. Patrick and General von Beckers, all situated in the Old Town of Osijek, called Tvrđa. We also suggest checking out popular music clubs and discotheques, such as Sound and Bastion in Tvrđa and Oxygene in the city centre.
