1. OVERVIEW
This student kit introduces you to the subject, Managing Small and Medium Enterprises (MngSME), a diploma elective subject. We are using the Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach. You are required to produce an individual report, a group report and other assessment component deliverables that will demonstrate your understanding of the subject, learning process and problem solving skills.
Besides the resource sessions (lectures) and tutorial sessions scheduled, you may also contact your tutor in person or via phone or e-mail on matters pertaining to the subject.

2. SUBJECT AIMS AND SYNOPSIS
The subject aims to equip students with an understanding and basic skills to manage the operations and challenges of small and medium-sized enterprises. Through the understanding of issues on growth factors, market strategies, resource and operations management, it will enable students to further understand how an organisation manages the growth of business, and then ensures the organisation can sustain growth as the market and competitive environment changes.
Using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach on a guided basis, students will have the opportunity to work in small groups to solve a PBL problem. In doing so, they will integrate key concepts learnt and develop skills to handle issues in managing small and medium-sized enterprises. They will also develop their process, problem-solving, communication and interpersonal skills.

5. DESCRIPTION OF ASSESSMENT COMPONENTS
Group ReportStudents will be required to work collectively as a team to develop a written report based on the given business scenario in the PBL problem.
Students are given a “real life” scenario in the PBL problem. Students are to work in groups of 5 to 6 persons per group.
Individual ReportThe Individual Report is a written report and is application-based relating to small and medium-sized business issues. The report will assess the depth of knowledge, application and understanding of students in the key concepts learnt in the subject.
Mid-Semestral TestThis is a one-hour test. The test is designed to assess students’ understanding and application of concepts learnt.
Self & Peer AssessmentThis component enables students to assess themselves and their group members on criteria which include attitude, sense of responsibility, resourcefulness and un-derstanding of the concepts learnt in the subject. Team work and positive group dynamics are essential as students are required to work in small groups through-out the semester to solve the PBL problem.

Class ParticipationStudents will be assessed on their level of participation in class. This will provide students with the motivation to be adequately prepared for class, to contribute to class discussions and to learn during tutorial.

Identify a small and medium enterprise (SME) in Singapore and give a brief description about its core business and the type of industry it is in. Conduct an analysis on the selected SME and prepare a report on the key resources that led to the success of its business. Students from the same tutorial group are NOT allowed to write on a same company.
You are to submit the report by MONDAY, 21 Nov 2011, 5pm.

9. PBL PROBLEM – 30%
Your company has decided to grow the company’s business operations locally. You and your team have been tasked by the company’s management team to do a detailed analysis (excluding detailed financial projection) of the business environment and to access the feasibility of expanding the business. Your team is also required to provide recommendations on the market expansion plan. Finally, you and your team are required to submit a report by WEDNESDAY, 1 FEB. 2012, 5pm.
Your group would also need to give a presentation on the week 17 beginning 13 FEB. 2012, during tutorial.
10. SYNOPSIS OF HOW PROBLEM IS LINKED TO SUBJECT
The PBL problem requires you to understand the needs and the types of re-sources required for small and medium-sized companies when considering grow-ing their businesses. Extensive research and a detailed analysis on the business and the relevant industry will lead you to propose a feasible and realistic business option to grow the business successfully.

Temasek Polytechnic’s Policy on Plagiarism
Academic integrity is expected of all students at Temasek Polytechnic. The Polytechnic requires all students to be assessed for their own work only. All students are required to give proper acknowledgement of all original sources of work used in their assignments, projects or other assessed work.
Disciplinary Action Against Students who Plagiarise
Plagiarism is a serious academic offence. Disciplinary action taken for students caught for plagiarism will depend on the severity and includes failing the subject, suspension and removal from course.
Definition of Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the act of taking and using the whole or any part of another person’s work and presenting it as your own without proper acknowledgement.
Examples of ‘work’ include text, writings, computer program, web page, on-line discussions, video, music, sound recording, image, photograph, technical drawing, invention, research findings, diagram, chart, artwork or design.
If you knowingly allow another student to use the whole or part of your work and to present it as his or her own work, you could be liable for abetting plagiarism. The penalty for abetting plagiarism includes failing the subject, suspension and removal from course.
