Why do I need to know about them?
Research tells us that motivation is linked to student achievement, and we also know that motivation is linked to student ownership of the learning process. That means student ownership is directly connected to increased student achievement. The student-led conference process is one that allows students to take responsibility for their learning, as they take pride in their accomplishments and make plans for the areas in which they struggle. Students will reflect on their learning and come away with a clear understanding of which standards/grade level indicators they have mastered, as well as the ones on which they still need to work. Along the way they’ll concentrate on those oral communication standards that often seem to get lost in the world of achievement testing.

What defines a Student-Led Conferences?
A chance for students to have a meaningful conversation with their parents.
A chance for students to share strengths and gaps.A chance for students to discuss and reflect on growth
that they have made.A chance for students to fill out an action plan to address

of their work.A chance for the teacher to be a facilitator while students
lead.

There will be several conferences going at one time.
The teacher circulates as a facilitator.
Students travel around the room discussing items on their agenda.
Students and parents create action plans for gap areas.

After Conferences
Parents fill out a reflection containing plus/deltas.
Students fill out a reflection.
Parents write a letter of encouragement to their student for the data notebook.
Parents may sign up for a one-on-one conference.
