Penguins are birds. They are warm-blooded animals. Most penguins
live in icy climates. They cannot fly. Instead, they use their wings to
glide through the water. Penguins have black and white feathers. They
lay only one egg at a time. The male penguin incubates the egg while
the female hunts for food. Penguins eat small fish and krill.
Parrots are birds. They are warm-blooded animals. Most parrots
live in tropical climates. They use their wings to fly high into the trees.
Parrots can be many colors: red, blue, green, and yellow. Parrots can
lay between one and six eggs at a time. The male and female parrots
take turns incubating the eggs while the other parrot finds food. They
eat seeds, fruit, and small insects.

Telling Time
This is new content for your first grader and we will be touching on it in the upcoming
weeks. Use this activity as an opportunity to explore what a clock looks like, where the
numbers are and telling time to the hour and the half hour. Telling time is an important
life skill and you will need to revisit these ideas and skills frequently.
Important things to talk about:
• Different types of clocks (digital and analog) and what they look like
• Parts of an analog clock (see image below)
o Minute hand, Hour hand, Second hand, Face, Hours
• Difference between the hands on the clock and what they mean
o Teacher Tip: Hour is shorter word, shorter hand. Minute is longer word,
longer hand. You can also color your clock hands different colors.
• Why are clocks important and where do we find them
• Difference between am and pm and activities that might occur then
• Telling time to the hour (8:00, 12:00, 10:00) and half hour (8:30, 5:30, 2:30)
• How many hours in a day, how many minutes in an hour
Extension:
- Talking about counting by 5’s as you move around the clock.
- Write down their own schedule. Example: a typical day of daily learning.
- Have your child show you a time on their clock (7:00, 4:30, 10:00, 3:30)
Please keep this page and clock for future activities.

Alternative Dreamer Story If You Don’t Have Access to Video
Dreams of Good Things Story There once was a wonderful mommy,
who asked each of her children once a week if they had any secret wishes,
while she was putting them to bed. This way they both could dream about it,
and maybe, because when learn to control our dreams, they can come true…
She also told them that the smaller the dream, the easier it was to make come true.
But the bigger dreams could be made possible by working on them a little bit at a time,
little by little, night by night, and day by day, while we are awake, and making plans of how they are to be.She also told
them a story about a little grouse, who wanted to build a house, and started with only one piece of straw.
The grouse had to decide when the house was big enough for his dream. He continued building the house one piece of straw at a time,
until one day, he said, “This is fine!” It could have been a huge castle, or a little homie house,
but it was the dream of one little grouse. She then told her children, "You too can
have whatever you want in your dreams, or in real life, if you work on it little by little,
night by night, and day by day".
The mother then asked her child, “What do you dream of "?
