92Nd CiviL SUpport tEam (CSt)The 92nd Civil Support Team, a Joint Service Team, recently visited Mojave High School. JROTC and several science classes attended the event. Close to 600 students went through the briefing and tour of the equipment that is used to determine if harmful chemicals are present at a site when the Support Team is called in. Students heard a briefing from the CST Science Officer and toured the mobile lab which was brought to campus. The students learned what the CST does to protect the community and see how science is used in real-world applications.
Guitar ProgramThe Mojave High School Guitar Program continues to be one of the top performing guitar programs in Nevada and among one of the best nationally. This year Mojave guitarists have won first place in the guitar quartet division in the Best in Southern Nevada Guitar Competition. The winning quartet was made up of 4 Mojave seniors: Eric Melendes, Anthony Alcantar, Jason Sanchez, and Moises Cervantes. Jason Sanchez was also among the top 5 soloists in this same competition.
In addition to this, Mojave guitarists have competed in Nevada Music Educator’s Association’s Solo and Ensemble competition in record numbers. At this competition there were a total of 20 superior ratings for Mojave guitar, which comes out to be 18 different students that will compete in the regional competition. This was the highest number of regional qualifiers for guitar out of all CCSD schools. Among those who have received superior ratings were Anthony Alcantar, Emilio Burgos, Benjamin Burton, Moises Cervantes, Angel Garcia, Antonio Garcia, James Granados, Aaron Jaffe, James Jones, Julien Luna, Eric Melendes, Hunter Otakon, Jesus Perales, Luis Perez, Jason Sanchez, Christian Thomas, and Stephenie Yeung. Next up for Mojave guitarists will be the regional and state rounds of the Solo and Ensemble competition as well as the CCSD Guitar Ensemble Festival.

Senior Fees/FinesSeniors have been receiving notices regarding fines/fees owed due to unreturned library or textbooks and/or fees not paid for courses/clubs/sports, etc. These fines are collected over the course of a student’s enrollment in the school district, not just at Mojave High School. Seniors will not be cleared to walk in the graduation ceremony until these fines are paid.
Here is what seniors should do to take care of these fines/fees:
1. Return library books and textbooks from previous years to Ms. Dufrene in the Library. Even if the library book or textbook is from another school in the district (middle school or high school), students may return the actual book to Ms. Dufrene.
2. See Ms. Mitton in the School Bank to pay the fees for lost/unreturned textbooks and library books as well as to pay for past fees in courses/clubs/activities/sports.
3. See Ms. Mitton in the School Bank to begin a payment plan if fees are too high to pay at once. Students may make smaller payments to the bank throughout second semester in order to be cleared by June.
If you have already set up a payment plan, we thank you for taking care of business!

PASS tutoringMojave High School has been offering PASS (Proficiency Academy for Student Success) tutoring before school (8:00-8:30 am) and after school (3:30-4:00 pm) throughout the year on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Tutoring will continue through May.
Math, Science, and English teachers recommend students to PASS tutoring, and a letter and schedule of tutoring sessions are sent home with each student once they are recommended. Teachers communicate with tutors to ensure students get the one-on-one help they need based on classroom performance.
If you have questions about PASS tutoring, please contact Lisa DenBleyker, Assistant Principal, at 799-0432 extension 4202.
Preparing to Get to CollegeIn 11th grade, the college preparation process accelerates and you need to start paying careful attention to looming deadlines and application requirements. It is important during your 10th and 11th grade years that you start laying out your college plan. The items in the list below will help you keep track of what's important for college admissions in your junior year.
1. In October, take the PSAtColleges won't see your PSAT scores, but a good score on the exam can translate into thousands of dollars.
2. take Advantage of AP and Other Upper-Level Course OfferingsNo piece of your college application carries more weight than your academic record. If you can take AP courses in 11th grade, do so. Your success in upper- level and college-level courses is a clear indicator that you have the skills to succeed in college.
3. Keep Your Grades Up11th grade is probably your most important year for earning high grades in challenging courses. If you had a few marginal grades in 9th or 10th grade, improvement in 11th grade shows a college that you've learned how to be a good student. A drop in your grades in 11th grade shows a move in the wrong direction, and it will raise red flags for the college admissions folks.
4. Assume a Leadership role in an Extracurricular ActivityThink about ways that you can contribute to your organization or community. Colleges are looking for future leaders, not passive bystanders.
5. In the spring, take the SAt and/or ACtWhile not essential, it's a good idea to take the SAT or ACT in your junior year. If you don't get good scores you can spend some time in the summer building your skills before retaking the exam in the fall. Colleges consider only your highest scores.
6. Visit Colleges and Browse the WebBy the summer of your junior year, you want to begin hammering out the list of colleges to which you'll apply.
7. Make the Most of Your SummerYou'll want to visit colleges in the summer, but don't make that your entire summer plan (for one, it's not something that you can put on your college applications). Whatever your interests and passions are, try to do something rewarding that taps into them. A well-spent junior summer can take many forms -- employment, volunteer work, travel, summer programs at colleges, sports or music camp... If your summer plans introduce you to new experiences and make you challenge yourself, you've planned well.
take Our daughters And Sons to Work® daythursday, April 24, 2014
2014 Theme – Plant a Seed, Grow a FutureTake Our Daughters And Sons To Work® is a national public education program that connects what children learn at school with the actual working world. By accompanying their parents/guardians to the workplace, girls and boys across the country discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life.
Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work® Day offers many positive modeling opportunities for parents/guardians to present career education opportunities to their children. As such, the Clark County School District will work cooperatively with parents/guardians of children who are eight years of age and older so this experience can be positive and promote career exploration.
While the Clark County School District supports the concept of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work® Day, it is not an event sponsored by the District. In accordance with the provisions of the Nevada Administrative Code, this day is an absence with respect to state law. In order for time out of school to be considered a school activity, the activity must meet the following criteria (NAC 387.185):
A pupil may be counted as in attendance only if the pupil is actually at school or engaged in an activity which is:
a. Sponsored by the school;
b. Part of the program of the school; and
c. Personally supervised by a member of the staff of the school.
Parents/Guardians should prearrange the absence using the Prearranged Absence form available at the school. Proof of participation must be documented on the company/employer’s letterhead and submitted to the school’s attendance office no later than May 2, 2014.
