Wednesday Aug 7, 2019 Sues News Second Uniform Sales Last week Melissa da Silveira organised for a second hand uniform sale in the quadrangle. Once again we have accumulated a very large number of jackets, pants and hats, most of which were unnamed but still in excellent condition. The great majority of these were sold at the stall with parents obtaining items of good value accordingly. My sincere thanks to Melissa da Silveira, Zada Lau, Karalee Lawson, Kelly Miller, Inna Spitskaia who gave up their time to sort and serve at the stall. The stall raised $470 dollars, this will go towards the redevelopment of the adventure playground at the front of the school. Battle of the Boots: Saturday 17 August from 2pm onwards The annual footy match between Hampton and St Marys dads is on once again at the Boss James Reserve in Bluff Road Hampton on Saturday 17 August. This is a fabulous afternoon of fun for the community; there will be plenty of food and drinks on sale throughout the afternoon and into the evening. The organising committee has booked a Jumping Castle from 2pm to 5pm and the cost is $5 for unlimited jumps. This is a wonderful bargain! This event generates additional funds for the two schools Love Me Love You, which is a charitable organisation that is focused on the mental health and wellbeing of young Australians; more information is available on the following link http://www.lovemeloveyou.org.au/ If any parents or community members are able to spare an hour or two to volunteer on the barbeque or in the canteen, your support would be gratefully received. Register by logging onto https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/code?code=nwj7j I look forward to seeing community members at the game. Reminder: 2019 Parent Opinion Survey WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK! The online Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents; only takes 10-15 minutes to complete. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. Thank you to the 54 families who have completed the survey to date. I encourage the remaining families to log on and complete the survey by Monday 2 September . This date has now been extended. Please contact Tim Bernau, John Painter or me if you would like more information.

Student Opinion During the latter part of May we surveyed the children in Grades 4, 5 and 6 to seek their opinions on our school, the teachers, curriculum and their learning. We had 311 children involved in the survey that was administered by Tim Bernau and John Painter over a number of days. The survey is completed electronically and all results are analysed offsite; the school receives the aggregate data only and this shows detailed analysis of the views of our children in various categories include gender, grade level and those of indigenous background. All individual responses remain anonymous; we really encourage the children to express their feelings honestly and directly. This year, our 2019 Annual Implementation Plan has specific targets relating to improving and extending student voice and agency. We have deliberately set targets relating to improving the students’ perception of: motivation and interest in their learning effective teaching time their sense of connectedness to school student voice and agency. In addition we have devised a number of actions that will assist in the achievement of targets and these include: student leaders invited to participate and present at School Council meetings greater clarity in role descriptions for student leaders having an emphasis on leadership for all students rather than just student leaders by creating

opportunities for students to show initiative in the planning, organizing and conducting of fundraisers and social welfare projects.

channelling student interests and shaping involvement in their learning creation of student news team that will see a weekly news clip distributed to all teachers that will

be presented to students at all year levels. This will also be presented to School Council. News team may capitalize on well-known local dignitaries (sporting, cultural and political) to interview.

utilising Seesaw platform to allow students to document their learning journey, capture evidence of their achievement and engage in deep reflections about their learning.

begin student leadership meetings where all school student leaders meet regularly to discuss school-wide matters and support each other

begin planning student parliament for 2020 implementation discussion of possibilities to create formal avenues for students to give voice to their needs, and to

regularly have input into curriculum planning, teaching and assessment. The results from the survey have just arrived at the school; a preliminary examination indicates significant improvement in the 2019 responses compared to recent years. The staff, Education Committee and School Council will carefully review the data and a detailed summary will be included in a future newsletter. However, a large number of students rated the following areas very highly indeed: Teachers setting high expectations for success (98%) The effort they want to show (86%) Differentiated learning challenge (92%) The level of care shown by the teacher for the individual needs of the child (100%). Assembly Thank you to 2A, for leading the singing of the National Anthem at assembly on Friday. James Morton played Blackbird by Lennon and McCartney on guitar. This was a wonderful performance, he played with great feeling and skill. It was very apparent that James loves his music. Well done James!

The Hampton Harmonies performed an impressive version of the song ‘Californian Dreaming’ which included a terrific solo section by Saxon Taranto on alto saxophone. This particular tune is one of my favourites and Traci deliberately selected it to help celebrate principals’ day and my birthday last Friday. The Harmonies children came to additional rehearsals and to ensure they were delivering a polished performance. I am sincerely grateful to the children and Traci for their extra time devoted to rehearsals. It was a lovely surprise for me at the assembly. Many children also extended warm wishes for my birthday, I was very touched by their kindness. Congratulations go to choristers including: Maggie Quartel, Elara Quinn, Maisie Bland, Scarlett McKenna, Juliette Hostein ,Isabel Reith, Lara Unkles, Eloise Glendenning Kai Hotton Max Pidduck, Jason Wang, Leila Halse, Mietta King, Hannah Pordage, Agatha Beare, Savannah James, Jesse Hart, Olive Tuppen, Sofia Edwards, Cara Sharpe, Ayesha Wigg, Oscar Johnston, Saxon Taranto and Chloe Edwards. Academic Excellence and Citizenship Awards Congratulations go to the following students who received academic excellence awards at assembly this week. Angelina Xu in FC for displaying strong motivation and determination to do her best; this

has resulted in very pleasing progress in all areas Jack Sharp in FC for displaying a positive approach to school and making impressive

progress with his reading. 100 Days of School On Monday of this week our prep students celebrated their first 100 days of school. They participated in a variety of enjoyable craft, maths and English activities all dressed in clothing typically worn 100 year ago. I extend my congratulations to our preps for reaching this milestone and hope that the next 100 days are filled with new learning, excitement and some challenges too.
