The aim for this project was to calculate through a preconceived equation setup using Microsoft excel to
determine the optimum passive performance through each season of the year. For the propose of the experiment, the site was based on the notion of a flat green field site with no obstruction located in the west
of Ireland

Integrated Living
Sligo 4th year Our Brief was to design an integrated sustainable neighbourhood, with the
underpinning ethos of ‘ meeting the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs’ Brundtland
land commissions.
‘What is essential is that we conceive of building literally as well as
metaphorically, as a social act with its own intrinsic integrative power. In
this we view architecture to be the background and space of human
interaction, Schittich (2007, p.12)
![Page 40: Student Portfolio](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070504/568c49b01a28ab4916952949/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
Introduction The real important aim for this project is to real portray the
conceptual idea that underpins the thinking of this scheme from the
early stages of research to the finished design. The concept is real
about the interconnection between the physical, the philological and
the social reality that we inhabit as a society. Early on in our
research It became apparent to me that in the successful examples of
integrated living such as the modern day Claredale house in London
to as far as the slums of Dharavi In Mumbia have developed
comparable characteristic such as functionality and variation of
form. They seem to have a compatible coherences of connection between
the people and the physical built environment and segregation
between social class is non- existent. Whiles trying to adapt and blend
this to Sligo's urban context the project has formed into a physical
representation of my concept. It’s a demonstration of how people live
individually and also as a collective community integrated seamlessly
into the urban context. It also demonstrates how variations in
architectural typology's on the one scheme can create a divers and
unique atmosphere possessing a complexity of interest for the people
who inhabit it.

Statistically Sligo's biggest demands for
housing is coming from struggling families
who cant afford the costs & the disabled
and elderly who need special consideration
when designing , there are, Irish council for social housing
• 95 one child case
• 44 two child case
• 78 disabled and elderly cases
this shows the high demand in the Sligo
borough area for these types of housing. National housing agency 2011
Research from the Irish council for social
housing show that in relation to the
disabled and elderly Sligo county has one
of the worst national statistics for with
only one housing association one housing
scheme and 4 unit for the elderly. Irish council for social housing

Design tools Green space in the community
This may be one of the key areas of
design in a community..... Does green
space improve our lives?
Yes!!!
Several research
exploration such as “The Healing Garden: Social Research” by Dr. Susan
Barton,” have shown that
having quality green
space close to our homes
has huge positive
psychological, health &
environmental benefits
among many others.
Arcadia in Cambridge has highly
integrated green space, the mixture
and variety of green space is
highly interesting from overgrown
planting, trees, vegetable plots,
open green space to mention a few.
The sense of tranquillity, safety,
nature & humanity is extremely
evident
A Case for Green Space
Frances Kuo of the University of
Illinois conducted a study of 28
identical high-rise public housing
projects. She found that people
living near green spaces:
Boasted a stronger sense of
Community, Coped better with
everyday stress and hardship, & Were
less aggressive and less violent, they
Performed better on tests of
concentration Managing problems
more effectively.

Design tools Amenities
Its crucial for a sustainable eco-
friendly community to have easy
access to the essential amenities
If one can walk to and from their
local amenities this may reduce the
need for a car.
Barbican, London was one of the best
example of easy access to essential
amenities like;
• Bupa health clinic
• Fitness gym
• Variety of shops
• Local pub
