—ADMISSIONS & RECORDS—

Spring 2016 registration is in full swing following the holi-day break. We are now in an open registration period, and ramping up as we speed towards the start of the Spring semester on the 19th of January. Over the break our office received a makeover. The con-struction necessitated a few extra days of closure, but enabled us to return from break to fresh paint and new carpeting. Packing and unpacking the office to allow for the move was strenuous, but it was well worth it. Thank you to Physical Plant and IT for making the whole pro-cess as smooth as possible.

For those students who finished up their degree this past Fall, it is time to apply for your degree! If you have not done so already, make sure to stop by the Admissions and Records office to complete a degree application. For students finishing up their degree this Spring, there will be another degree filing period beginning February 22. As a reminder, students who need to have their end-of-semester grades sent to another school should utilize the relatively new method of re-questing official transcripts online via the “Transcript Request” link on the Admissions and Records page of the website.

—FINANCIAL AID—

Staffing: The Financial Aid Office is currently interview-ing for a Full Time Student Success Facilitator that will be replacing a previous Financial Aid Assistant position. Once this position is filled, we will be fully staffed! Processing: We are currently within one week in pro-cessing for the 2015/16 school year and are starting to pick up with the Spring 2016 semester nearing. We antic-ipate an increase in student wait time for processing dur-ing the next few weeks, although we will strive to keep the process moving smoothly. Our goal is to fund as many students as possible for the Spring 2016 semester in a timely manner. FAFSA and Dream Act Application: The 2016/17 FAFSA and Dream Act Application became available on January 1, 2016 . We are on schedule to start accepting docu-ments for the 2016/17 school year starting in March. Notification will be made via website and email. Auto-Packaging: We are moving forward in program-ming our system to auto package the majority of student aid that we administer. We anticipate this will decrease students’ wait time to be processed, allowing students to make informed decisions well before the Fall 2016 se-mester starts. Office Hours: As of January 4, 2016, the Financial Aid Office hours are as follows: Monday- 8:00am-6:00pm and Tuesday-Friday-8:00am-5:00pm. Mid-February the office may close on Wednesdays from 1:00pm-5:00pm, pending students’ needs. We are looking forward to a new semester and serving our students in the best way possible!

—SCI*FI—

The SCI*FI (Foster Youth Program) students have been on-the-move this past month. In December, we joined the students from Butte College and Chico State for pizza, hot chocolate, and the Christmas Tree Lighting in Chico. We also made holiday crafts at All Fired Up (see photo at left). The 2nd annual Winter Retreat was held in Mt. Shasta in January, helping students get ready for the upcoming semes-ter. With the newly funded CAFYES program through EOPS, we hope to grow to 50 SCI*FI stu-dents by the end of the semester.

—STUDENT SERVICES STAFF CORNER—

Ramona Quenelle: Administrative Secretary I – Dean of Students Hometown: Redding, California Hobbies: Dancing, traveling, sewing, reading, and listening to music. Ramona also enjoys spending time with her husband and their five daughters, ranging in age from 4 months to 13 years old. Obtaining an education has always been an extremely im-portant goal in Ramona’s family, especially as a first genera-tion high school / college graduate. After obtaining her Mas-ter’s Degree in 2011, Ramona felt like something was miss-ing—so she returned to, and graduated from, Shasta College in 2015 because she missed learning. “Education can change the whole trajectory of someone’s life. Education can take you further in life than you ever dreamed. Returning to Shas-ta College as an employee al-lows me to con-tribute to the path of success that our stu-dents are on. Working here gives me the opportunity to make the differ-ence, big or small, in someone’s life, and that is the most rewarding feeling in the world.” If you see Ra-mona around campus, please say hello!

—ACCESS AND EQUITY—

In February and March, the Office of Access and Equity will be hosting a series on Love and Belong-ing led by faculty, staff, community members, and students. Please look for our posters and join us in discussing and creating community. We are also co-sponsoring two transfer events with the Transfer Center: The Steps to College Fair: Saturday, February 6th. Students who would like to attend the Fair are en-couraged to sign up in the Shasta College Transfer Center, room 126. Transportation and money for lunch will be provided. The event is free. This Fair, sponsored by the Consulate General of Mexico in Sacramento, will allow students to learn about gain-ing admission to California colleges, information about financial aid, scholarships and the California Dream Act. While priority will be given to Shasta College students, interested high school students will be accepted as space permits and are encour-aged to apply. The event is for all students; work-shops will be presented in bi-lingual formats. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Transfer Fair: On Wednesday, February 10th, Sierra College in Rocklin will be hosting a “Historically Black Colleges and Universities Trans-fer Fair.” Students who would like to attend the Fair are encouraged to sign up in the Shasta College Transfer Center, room 126. Come learn about the historic Chancellor’s Office agreement leading to guaranteed transfer to 9 HBCUs. The Office of Ac-cess and Equity is providing bus transportation for any Shasta College students who register to attend the event. For more information, you can email [email protected] or call (530) 242-7618.

—DSPS—

The College to Career program under DSPS is still growing. We have added an Employment Techni-cian, Jamie Rayborn, and also an instructional paraprofessional, Deborah Howland. Eleven stu-dents completed their first semester of college in this program last fall.

—EOPS—

Mary Bailey, EOPS staff member, was invited by PTK President Eddie Nolan to give the address at the Fall 2015 Phi Theta Kappa induction ceremony. She is pictured below (on the right) with EOPS Peer Advisor and inductee, Rebecca Kalford. Here is an excerpt from Mary’s speech: “I get to see a student on graduation day and send them off knowing that they are ready to move to the next chapter in their lives. Whatever lies ahead, they are better prepared because they attended Shasta College and graduated. This is what I do at EOPS. I am a touch stone on that path to graduation. I am there to believe in you, encour-age you and see what it is you need to succeed.” Mary definitely makes a difference in the lives of our students.
