Monthly Update Highlights

Employee Updates

Karina Sandoval, Jose Aranda, and Jordan Frodente were hired as Student Services Assistants in

Admissions. They previously served as Project Assistants so we are grateful that we have them as

permanent employees!

DSPS would like to congratulate Erick Escalante on his new role as Instructional Assistant/Learning

Resources, supporting the function of Test Proctoring. Additionally, we would like to congratulate

Raymond Arellano, a former NANC in DSPS, on his new role as an SSA working in General Counseling.

Andrew Tanjuaquio, Student Services Technician will support the department by providing Student

Support Services (SSSP) to our students by facilitating department workshops. Abimaliel Rosario Lopez,

Student Services Technician will support Adrienne Dines with the International Student Program as well

as General Counseling, to include Instructor Referrals and the Early Readmit process. Raymond Arellano,

Student Services Assistant will support Laura Mathis with MET and Michael Temple with Mesa Academy.

Student staff member in the Transfer Center was accepted to CSU East Bay. Adjunct Counselor Hieu Huynh has joined STAR-TRIO.

Student Health Services is pleased to announce the hiring of front office student worker Julian Nguyen.

Vice President Hands will serve as a Mentor for the 2018-2019 ACCCA Mentor Program

Events & Activities

Thanks to AS Funding, the Peer Navigator program invested in board games to host a monthly game

night. Complete with snacks, music, and enthusiasm, the Peer Navigators welcomed over 20 students

and challenged them to a game of Connect Four, Uno, Battleship, and Jenga!

Counseling set a new Mesa record this month by signing 28 UCLA TAP contracts for fall 2018.

Borderless Scholars/EOPS supported students with processing a total of 88 Dreamer's Emergency

Grants!

Miriam Pacheco, Promise Counselor, partnered with Amber Alatorre, FYE Counselor/Coordinator, to

offer Academic Success Workshops to students who were falling behind in units and falling below a 2.0

GPA. The workshops helped students understand their academic status and offered resources and

support to help them improve. Eighteen Promise students attended the February workshops with

additional workshops being planned for March. .

Career conducted workshops on resume-building and job and internship search.

Mesa College Student Affairs and Mesa College Outreach are both making efforts to promote voter

registration prior to the mid-term elections scheduled for later this year.

Student Success & Equity participated in the African American Achievement Collaboration.

Innovations & Data

Mesa Assessment continues to play a large role in the development of tools, practices, and procedures

for District-wide compliance of AB 705 by Fall 2019. The Placement Assistant has been presented to

math faculty at discipline meetings and Miramar counseling faculty to provide others across the District

with an understanding of current Mesa practices and how those might be adapted District wide in an

effort to support our incoming students.

For the 2017-18 academic year we currently we have 72 CalWORKs students.

Outreach has partnered with the Business faculty to support outreach efforts at the high schools for the

Entrepreneurship Program.

Our High Tech Center in DSPS received a total of 74 alternate media requests and 135 students logged a

total of 625 hours in the HTC Lab.

Evaluations has been working diligently in collaboration with Student Affairs to prepare for this year’s

new commencement ticketing process. The departments have been working with the office of

communication to develop new marketing materials used to inform graduates on how to pick up the

commencement tickets in the next few months.

Total Dreamer Emergency Grants through Financial Aid: 139 students/$69,369

Student Success Stories

A wonderful EOPS student was assisted with a last minute resume-building request and landed an

internship interview. The student was subsequently offered the position.

Students are beginning to get acceptance notices from four-year institutions! Among our special pops:

Natchel Bello, Borderless Scholar, has been accepted to SDSU! One of our FAST Scholars has been

accepted to CSULB.

Acceptance to UCSD and SDSU are being released; many students are coming in to inform staff. Please

celebrate their success!

Policies & Procedures

Student Services is keeping a watchful eye on AB 705, Governor Brown’s proposed fully Online Community College, AB 19 - California College Promise and the Governor’s Budget Proposal.


Admissions

Employee Updates

Karina Sandoval, Jose Aranda, and Jordan Frodente were hired as Student Services Assistants. They previously

served as Project Assistants so we are grateful that we have them as permanent employees!

Innovations & Data

Our office handled 1,936 calls in February; accepted 138 Allied Health applications; student walk-in for

Residency, International Students, and Allied Health - 275; petitions - 93; forms processed - 263.


Assessment

Events & Activities

Assessment & Testing is working closely with Outreach to prepare for the Outreach High School Pre-enrollment

workshops where students will be able to go through the Placement Assistant at the end. We anticipate that

being able to offer Placement Assistant to all of our feeder high schools, as opposed to the two pilot high

schools last Spring, will make a huge difference for students and will also help to shift the high schools'

placement focus from Accuplacer to Placement Assistant for following graduating classes.

We have begun to see students who are coming in to complete their SSSP requirements completed before

Mesa Assessment continues to play a large role in the development of tools, practices, and procedures for

Events & Activities

Monthly Peer Navigator Workshop: Applying for Scholarships: February 5 and 13

Quintin Wortham and Vanessa Roldan provided a workshop for CRUISErs and Promise students on how

to research and apply for scholarships. In addition to guiding students to locate resources, Peer

Navigators provided a handout with an action statement (I will apply for____) to motivate students.

Both workshops averaged 20 students.

Campus Conexiones: February 21

Current and past students shared their narrative with our first student panel speaker series. Event was

well attended as an English class, faculty and staff, students, and parents attended. Feedback from

audience was positive. Many shared how narrative served as reinforcement to keep pursuing personal

goals.

Peer Navigator Game Night: February 22

Report on Peer Navigator contacts with mentees became available. Data reveals the increase in monthly two-

way connections impacts a student's persistence, retention, and academic success (C or higher).


Current CRUISEr took the time to share how Philip Johnson, Peer Navigator, successfully guided her through her

first day of the spring semester and continues to be supportive. She expressed her gratitude and said she could

not have passed her math class had it not been for Philip's guidance..

Policies and Procedures

Program is currently revising Peer Navigator Handbook and including new components to mentor training.

Special Recognition

Sara Ramirez and Lauren Arriola for their courage to share their narrative while dispelling cultural norms on their

path towards higher education! They are an inspiration.


CalWORKs

Events & Activities

Attend CalWORKs Region X Meetings - Sasha Verastegui.

Collaboration efforts with San Diego Continuing Education Centers has become strong and thriving.

Participation efforts with campus activities have increased.

Events & Activities

Two workshops were conducted this month including resume building and job and internship search. This

month we participated in Winter CRUISE and presented TCE Overview of services for the Meet & Greet event to

51 students. The Career Center and The Stand collaborated with faculty member, Jill Moreno, and provided a

presentation covering Career Center and The Stand services including volunteer opportunities at The Stand to 24

students. In addition, we were invited by Mesa College Outreach to meet with 30 students from Oceanside High

School

A wonderful EOPS student was assisted with a last minute resume-building request and landed an internship

interview. The student was subsequently offered the position.

This month we received a student message on behalf of a computer science faculty professor Hank Beaver. Here

is the students comment:

After high school, I was unsure of what I wanted to pursue as my career. I had different choices from cosmetology,

culinary school, or the medical field. I was very hesitant to decide which school to apply for, I took the gap year to try

and figure it out myself. Even after a year off, I ended up taking my parents’ advice and apply for a pharmacy technician

program at a medical institute. I wish I knew about the Mesa Career Center beforehand, this would’ve been a great

resource for trying to discover what career/majors interested me. Especially their Focus 2 online system, this would be

most helpful for me as I’m still a bit indecisive on what I’d like to do in the tech field. I will be definitely be using the

career center during my time as San Diego Mesa College.

We would like to recognize Professor Hank Beaver for being an advocate of our services and connecting his

students to all that we have to offer. His actions go above and beyond and help positively engage students with

student’s services.


Counseling

Employee Updates

Andrew Tanjuaquio, Student Services Technician will support the department by providing Student Support

Services (SSSP) to our students by facilitating department workshops. He will participate in campus activities

supporting the department’s commitment to student success. Andrew will also be responsible for updating and

maintaining the department webpage and VISIX. He currently works at the District office as a Senior Student

Services Assistant. He possesses the necessary tools and experience for this position and will be a positive asset

to our department. He has been a part of the ERP team will be able to assist with the transition to Campus

Solutions. He will begin working in the Counseling office next Thursday, February 15th.

Abimaliel Rosario Lopez, Student Services Technician will support Adrienne Dines with the International Student

Program as well as General Counseling, to include Instructor Referrals and the Early Readmit process. Abi

currently works in the Admissions Office as a Student Services Assistant providing clerical support to the

International programs. His work with the International Program gives him the knowledge and experience to

support the program in Counseling. He will begin working in the Counseling office on Tuesday, February 20th.

Raymond Arellano, Student Services Assistant will support Laura Mathis with MET and Michael Temple with

Mesa Academy. Raymond is a NANCE employee currently working in the Disability Support Programs and

Services (DSPS). His knowledge and experience working in DSPS will complement his responsibilities in General

Counseling. He possesses a positive and professional demeanor and has a passion for serving students. Raymond

will be a great fit for this position. He will begin working in the Counseling office on Tuesday, February 20th.

Events & Activities

The CDAIE committee has worked to sponsor, co-sponsor or support 18 events during February 2018 for Black

History Month, both on and off-campus. This includes the Rosa Parks Birthday Recognition event, STEAM

Discussions on Mathematics and Engineering, an Open Mic for Poetry and Spoken Word, and a Healing Circle for

students to have the opportunity to share their deepest feelings and be supported by caring peers. Events have

been well attended and appreciated by all. This month the committee also posted flyers across campus designed

to counter the hateful and divisive flyers which had been posted illegally on campus. The colorful flyers CDAIE

posted underscored the importance of love, unity, solidarity and compassion.

Laura Murray, a formerly incarcerated student who met with Ramiro Hernandez and Chris Kalck, finished her

first sem. at SDSU. She now has a 4.0 GPA, and is now President of the Project Rebound Student Alliance at

SDSU.

Erika Higginbotham and Steven Salter had an opportunity to join the School of Mathematics and Natural

Sciences for the February School Meeting to present on Disability Support Programs and Services and to address

questions related to disability accommodation in the classroom.

Innovations & Data

In the month of February, DSPS Counselors met with a total of 250 students for scheduled appointments and an

additional 280 on drop-ins. DSPS Test Proctoring administered a total of 207 exams to 155 unique students. Our

High Tech Center received a total of 74 alternate media requests and 135 students logged a total of 625 hours in

the HTC Lab.

EOPS/CARE

Employee Updates

EOPS would like to welcome Martin Martinez, VA work-study, to our team!

Events & Activities

EOPS Departments in all three colleges, in collaboration with the District, are applying for the

CAFYES/NextUp Allocation through the State. This would provide funding to increase services to a sub-

group of former foster youth.

Master Keys Series - weekly motivational workshop series have started, they are targeted to former

foster youth, but all students are welcome!

Borderless Scholars/EOPS supported students with processing a total of 88 Dreamer's Emergency

Grants!

A name has been established for serving formerly incarcerated students, Project Re-Start.

In collaboration with MT2C, EOPS is offering tutoring four hours a week in our conference room.

Sade Burrell collaborated with Mesa Academy and SSE to coordinate the Woman-to-Woman Conference

- the event was a tremendous success.

EOPS is close to reaching its goal of serving 800 this academic year. We are at 790 and student and have left a

few spots open to accommodate special population students throughout the semester.

Outreach & Community Relations

Events & Activities

On February 5th, Student Ambassadors provided assistance with Continuing Education's ESOL Mesa

orientation. Ambassadors Jordan Nash, Karen Villanueva, Beatrix Stark, and Nicolas Irving provided a

tour for 80 students of the Student Services Department showcasing the support services and programs

available to them. We are excited to be able to continue this partnership with Continuing Education and

are encouraged by the steadily increasing numbers each semester.

On February 8th, Outreach was invited by La Jolla High School to present at their Articulation Parent

Information Night. Mesa Outreach alongside San Diego Unified was able to promote CCAP to parents

and their students. Thereafter, parents and students were able to ask questions pertaining to

matriculation and student services programs.

On February 12th, Outreach held an Admissions Application workshop at Mt. Everest Academy. Students

were able to submit their college applications and afterwards hear a Mesa presentation that included

next steps and student services information.

On February 20th, Outreach hosted Oceanside College Bound with a warm welcome from Dr. Ashanti

Hands followed by a Mesa presentation and a campus wide tour. Students from Oceanside participated

heavily in our student panel asking question in regards to the college experience. Ambassadors, Beatrix

Stark, Jordan Nash, Joshua Quiroz, and Cassie Casares provided the campus tour.

On February 27th, Outreach hosted Marcy High School with a Mesa College presentation followed by a

campus tour. There were 25 students interested in Mesa College's offerings including CTE and certificate

programs. Student Ambassador, Nicolas Irving and Beatrix Stark provided the campus wide tour.

The 2016-17 Promise cohort is coming up on the end of their second academic year and Mesa has seven

students who have already petitioned to graduate this Spring. These seven Mesa students are the only 2016-17


Promise students in the District who have petitioned to graduated and serve as a testament to the support they

have received from the entire Mesa Community to reach this academic milestone.

Student Ambassadors are anxiously waiting for acceptance notifications from four-year universities. Joshua

Quiroz has been accepted to SDSU and CSU Long Beach. Maia Wakefiled has been accepted to San Francisco

State, Philander Smith College (HBCU), and Coppin State University (HBCU). Nina Geissler has been accepted to

CSU Fullerton, CSU Long Beach, and San Francisco State. We congratulate them on this achievement as they

await to hear back from their remaining schools!

Events & Activities

Staff Development Claudia Perkins, the Mesa College Compliance and Discipline Officer, attended a Title IX

training presented by the Department of Justice, Office of Violence Against Women, in Atlanta, GE, from

February 19th to 22nd. She regarded the event as very informative and enjoyable, primarily due to the

presence of other SDCCD members from other campuses and locations who do not often get the

opportunity to meet and collaborate.

Associated Students The Mesa College Associated Students (AS), formerly known as the Associated Student

Government, has selected two conferences to attend during the Spring 2018 semester: The ASACC National

Student Advocacy Conference in Washington, DC, on March 17 - 20, and the NSLDC Chicago Diversity

Conference in Chicago, IL, on April 5 - 8. The General Assembly legislative conference, previously hosted by

the Student Senate for California Community Colleges, was cancelled for the Spring.

Club Rush As usual, the Mesa College Inter-Club Council hosted an on-campus Club Rush event on February

20th through the 22nd. About twenty different student groups were represented. Notably, this was a rare

occurrence of a non-campus entity, called Indivisible, being included in the Club Rush line up. This group

promotes voter registration among college-age students and they reported a good turnout in terms of how

many students they were able to encourage to register. Due to a sudden but severe rain shower on the 21st

the event was cancelled for that day, but the ICC plans to arrange for another two-day Rush event in March

to make up for the loss.

Club Orientation / Registration The Inter-Club Council hosted a Club Orientation presentation on Friday,

February 23rd, which was also the last day to submit club registration documents through the online system.

3 new clubs signed up to be registered this semester, which is typical for Spring; most clubs register in the

Fall to be active through the Spring.

Scholarship Report Applications for scholarships offered through the Mesa College Foundation were due on

February 20th, a week earlier than previous years. Mesa College received a total of 1,595 applications across

148 opportunities from 384 students, which averages out to just slightly more than 4 applications per

student. These numbers are remarkably similar to last year, and the anomalies identified in this data, when

compared to the numbers from years past, provide clear direction on how we can improve the Scholarship

Program moving forward.

Register to Vote Mesa College Student Affairs and Mesa College Outreach are both making efforts to

promote voter registration prior to the mid-term elections scheduled for later this year. In addition to the

registration efforts performed by the Outreach office, the non-campus entity Indivisible was invited to

campus for two weeks, from February 20th to March 2nd, to assist with registering students to vote. Under

the circumstances, and especially due to the recent events in Parkland, FL, the importance of encouraging

our young people to participate in the political process and speak with their votes as well as their voices

cannot be overstated.

recognized for the Mesa Olympian Award. This is due to her exceptional leadership with ERP, dedication to

excellence, and commitment to students.

Commendation to Laura Mathis and the Personal Growth Workgroup for continuing to look at data on how to best support students, and for her continued efforts to lead along with the following committee members: Adam Erlenbusch, Anne Hedekin, Guillermo Marrujo, Kirsten Pogue-Cely, and Raquel Sojourner.

San Diego Mesa College was awarded $140,468 to go toward the Veterans Resource Center standards established by the Chancellors’ Office. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Veterans Office, along with the counseling faculty and the rest of student services for supporting our student veterans.

Thanks to Charlie Lieu for working with Adam Erlenbusch in launching the website dedicated to support Mesa’s Second Year Experience – ADVOC8 program.

Thanks to the various student services leads: Leroy Johnson, Barbara Plandor,Steven Salter, Monica Demcho, Marichu Magana, and Sasha Verastegui for working with Student Development in developing the ERP schedule for counseling faculty.

Commendation to Claudia Estrada and the Evaluations team, along with the Commencement Committee for all their hard work in preparation for the upcoming 2018 Commencement Ceremony and Ticket Information.

We currently have a new Mesa College record for the amount of UCLA TAP contracts signed in February. Thanks to Anthony’s leadership and UCLA TAP coordination efforts. There were 28 UCLA TAP contracts signed this month. Keep up the good work!

Larry Maxey and Ailene Crakes launched the Integrated Planning Survey and Report which has been distributed to individuals and programs whose funding requests were granted through the Innovative Practice Funding Request.


Student Health Services

We are pleased to announce the hiring of front office student worker Julian Nguyen. We are working quickly to

fill the vacant position of Counseling Coordinator. We are 'precepting' students from Barry University, University

of San Diego and Mesa College.

Events & Activities

Rebecca Lee LMFT is again hosting the "Be Calm" groups on Tuesday's at 1 pm. She incorporates play therapy

and relaxation techniques for students with anxiety. Classes are free an anonymous.

Innovations& Data

We had 610 in office contacts. We are not experiencing the huge numbers of students with the flu as reported

by other colleges and universities. This is due to the excellent collaboration between our Community Health

Nurses and RN/NP Nurses in the office. Our "Keep Your Hands Clean" campaign, free flu vaccinations, flu

education and "soon as you're sick" medical visits add to the power of flu prevention on campus.

Welcome Week was focused on drug abuse prevention and the new marijuana laws. Hundreds of students

played Root Beer pong, answered questions about drug use and won prizes.

The Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence prevention event was fantastic with 4 community agencies tabling

and presenting, free lunch and short films. We hosted 116 students for 30-60 minute visits with extra credit

earned. Many more students dropped in for shorter visits. Three students returned to the office for counseling.


Our student worker Kennedy Carrothers is entering the National University Bachelor's in Nursing program in

April. We are all excited for her!

We recognize Michelle Harris Feller LMFT, Sue Shrader Hanes LMFT and Rebecca Lee LMFT for their

professionalism and "going the extra mile" for every student. Their dedication and concern for students is

admirable and they have worked many hours, late into the evening, to support our students in their academic

Direct Student Support:

59 applications have been received to date this semester.

41 Students have been assessed

$6063in assistance has been given out. $3800 in book vouchers, $1650 for food, $185 for printing and

428 for transportation (Not including the EOPS students)

$375.00 is the largest single amount awarded.

First time that 100% of those we have given assistance to have complete assessment and orientation.

90% have education plans on file.

The Stand Report:

In the month of February we provided over 960 transactions at The Stand.

So far for the Spring semester we have provided students with over 3850 items

We sent out a campus newsletter with updates including information on our Amazon Wish List.

We sent out a survey to all students who used The Stand during the fall semester and look forward to

reporting out on this. We received 204 unique responses and look forward to sharing more of the

feedback we collected soon.

We are working with our management team and Feeding San Diego to provide our students with more

access to food and are hoping to be making an announcement soon regarding this non-point based

portion of The Stand


Special Recognition goes to Johanna Aleman and Nate Talo (accounting) for their hard work in assisting one of

our former students by breaking down and working around institutional barriers so that he could take

advantage of a scholarship opportunity to play division 1 football. We appreciate all that you did to support

Bryce, kudos.

Veterans Graduation Ceremony

Friday May 18, 2018, open to all graduating student veterans/active duty that earned a degree in Fall

2017 or will be earning a degree Spring 2018 and Summer 2018. Event starts at 11am sharp in MC

211A/B.

Breakfast Social

Tuesday March 13, 2018. Come join us and have some delicious breakfast while helping raise funds for

the Veterans Emergency Fund through the SD Mesa College Foundation. The event will run from 8am-

11am and you can find us at the MS Circle near the Veterans’ Resource Center. There is a delivery option

available.

Vice President Hands will serve as a Mentor for the 2018-2019 ACCCA Mentor Program

Events & Activities

The Mesa Pathways Planning Task Force (MPPT) has prioritized 6 of the 14 elements and is receiving

input from various campus groups and committees to outline a plan that will guide our work through

Spring 2019. Our priorities include Shared Metrics, Inclusive Decision Making, Guided Major and Career

Exploration, Improved Basic Skills, Clear Program Requirements and Proactive and Integrated

Academic/Student Support. A draft of the plan will be vetted throughout campus March 5 – 16th. Our

final plan will be submit to the State Chancellors Office on March 30th. Visit our Mesa Pathways

webpage to stay up to date on our work.

Vice President Hands provided Closing Remarks at Mesa’s first ever Woman to Woman Conference, a

Black History Month event sponsored by EOPS.

Six of our college initiatives (SSSP, Equity, BSI, Title V, Title III and Strong Workforce) are reviewing and

acting on our second report, “Mapping Assets for Equity: Defining Equity and Planning for Coherence

Across Initiatives” prepared by the Center for Urban Education. This semester’s goals include proposing

a definition for equity and exploring ways to operationalize equity within existing initiatives.

Vice President Hands and Trina Larson attended the Guided Pathways: Creating a Lasting Guided

Pathways Movement on Campus workshop in Downtown San Diego.

Vice President Hands participated in the Legislative Visit to Mesa College. The visit focused on our

Health Information Management Program and Innovations in Math, English and Placement.

The Safety Plan Resource and Implementation workgroup is planning a full evacuation drill with alarms.

The intent is to minimize impact on students while providing important training for employees. The

group is looking into scheduling this between sessions, the last week of May.

The M&M team hosted a Lunar New year event. We even had red envelopes filled with lucky candy and

some even had money. Our upcoming March event will be a pie contest on Pi Day.

Innovations & Data

• Equity finalized Mesa College’s Agreement/Partnership with Feeding San Diego. This partnership will

allow us to distribute groceries, at least once a month, to students, staff and faculty, free of charge.

Student Success & Equity will take the lead on this partnership.

• Mesa’s Multiple Measures Assessment Program/Placement Assistant Team received preliminary findings

from the launch of our Placement Assistant. The full report will be released next month. We have also

received word that the District will adopt and scale a version of our Placement Assistant for Math and

English.

• Mesa Guided Pathways web page has been redesigned.

• The College Technical Analyst has helped facilitate the creation of a new web page created for ADVOC8.

They now have a new platform to promote their program!


• STAR Trio web page has been updated; it now includes a new fillable application and Service Request

form.

• Old SDCCD technology pick-up for Student Services departments was a success. DSPS, Career/Transfer,

STAR Trio, and counseling departments now have less clutter and more room to work and help students.

• A new events page has been established for Student Health Services.

• We launched survey to attain feedback on Academic Works (the electronic scholarship platform) and

scholarship process.
