Writing and Social Justice Seminar is the capstone course for English majors, designed to emphasize issues of social justice through writing and research to raise awareness of the needs of all creation. Each student has chosen their own topic based on their academic interests, as follows. Sister Eusebia Urassa’s project argues that even though there are campaigns promoting social justice and gender equality broadcasted daily on the media in Tanzania, women’s rights continue to be violated in their family and social lives, as well as in the economic, educational and political opportunities in which they can participate. Allysa McMillan’s project is an analysis of the history of feminism modified to English Language Arts lessons. The focus of this unit lesson is for students to explore the effects of feminist movements from past to present. Tori Jonet’s project will focus on the novel, The Great Gatsby, and the historical concept of the “American Dream” with a comprehensive unit plan and rationale incorporating successful teaching

ethical, some even referring to it as another form of eugenics. The Christian Church has upheld the dignity of all human life, including those with disabilities, is opposed to euthanasia and assisted suicide. It teaches that those with disabilities should not be in a place of extreme suffering, but rather that pain should be reduced by reasonable means, but not by death. The Catholic Church views the dignity of the disabled body in light of the Incarnation, that Jesus Christ became flesh in order to unweave the power suffering and death has over the entirety of the human person, body and soul. The human person has been loved into existence by the Trinity, and death, in all its disguises, cannot change this fundamental reality. The euthanizing of persons with disabilities is contrary not only to the basic right of every human person to their own life, but is contradictory to the design of the human person to care for and foster life in those who are within the reach of their embrace. This presentation will discuss this inherent dignity of the body in the Christian tradition, the value of suffering as an act of communion and the privilege of the caretaker in caring for those with disabilities.

11:20 - 11:50 a.m.The Beauty and Aesthetics of Franz Schubert’s German LiederROOM 115, FMCNoah Liermann, Music Performance & Pedagogy,

Newton, WISession Facilitator: Joshua Hernday

Since the late Renaissance era, German Lieder has been a prevalent form of entertainment in the realm of classical music. This genre of music was then further changed in the early 1800s by German composer Franz Schubert. Through the exploration of Western philosophies of that time, Franz Schubert established and changed German Lieder into what is now known as Art Song by utilizing early German philosophy, classical music theory, as well as the philosophy of beauty and aesthetics. It is through his interpretation of these disciplines that Franz Schubert was able to establish Art Song as the beautiful and intricate genre that is known and loved today.

CREATIVITY AND FAITH

Baradic, Jaeger and Solander work in a variety of mediums. The artists share an interest in synthesizing the creative process and faith. “My body of work collectively tells a story of my life and relationship with my Creator,” said Baradic.

For Jaeger, art is a way of conveying emotion while also “reflecting the love of the Father who wants to be in relationship with everyone.”

Solander said that she is “influenced by the relationships that humans have with themselves, others, the environment, and God.” She added that her art “expresses these relationships in different ways and presses deeper into the philosophical idea of aesthetics.”

MEGAN BARADIC

Baradic’s artwork has been heavily influenced by her experience growing up traveling the United States in an RV with her family. Her work is representational yet slightly whimsical, as she prefers to experiment with color and texture in her pieces to tell a story of her relationship with her Creator. Painting, ceramics and photography are her favorite mediums of artistic expression; she draws inspiration from her many passions, including faith, music and exploring the outdoors.

ALLAN JAEGER

A senior at Silver Lake College of the Holy Family, Allan (AJ) Jaeger was recently recognized for his sculpture he contributed to the Franciscan Action Network’s art exhibit and contest for students from Franciscan colleges and high schools. Jaeger works in a variety of mediums, including drawings in graphite, charcoal, and chalk, and sculpture. He writes that when drawing the human body, he focuses on the face — especially the eyes since they are “gateways to the soul.” When working in sculpture, he prefers wood and plaster as these mediums convey “the great emotion of a human moment.”

KAYE SOLANDER

Originally, from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Kaye Solander is a Studio Art and Theology Major at Silver Lake College of the Holy Family. She has spent two summers traveling as a missionary in the Diocese of Marquette and also has recently spent the summer teaching at the Peninsula School of Art in Door County. Her favorite mediums include acrylic paint, leaf and ceramics.

In 1999, Pope St. John Paul II addressed a letter to artists saying: “To all who are passionately dedicated to the search for new “epiphanies” of beauty so that through their creative work as artists they may offer these as gifts to the world.” To be a gift to others and to contemplate the epiphanies of beauty in the world is central to the Christian vision of art and what it means to be an artist. presents an opportunity to begin to process their experiences in an attempt to start healing and also allows for a community of support to develop through a shared need for poetic expression of the trauma that war brings. The shocking dehumanization of the Vietnamese people by American soldiers resulted in a new movement toward poetry of moral witness, which created a national history in poetic verse, told by many, many citizens from all walks of life. In this way, poetry helped the country heal from the trauma of war, while at the same time making it impossible for anyone to forget or ignore the atrocities committed.
