Students

• should plan to attend a student teaching application meeting from 12:00 to 12:50, the third Tuesday of October or February, two semesters in advance of their student teaching.

• must submit their application for student teaching by the second Friday of the next semester.

• All application materials are available at the following website and must be obtained from there after the Application Meeting: www.nmu.edu/education Select Student Teaching, then select Student Teaching Application.

• In order to be eligible for student teaching you must submit the following:

Must be submitted the semester before you apply for student teaching.

Fill out the online form, read the Statement of Understanding, then submit.

STUDENT TEACHING STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING

1.I understand that I must meet all requirements for student teaching prior to student teaching and that if the Director of Field Experiences does not approve my student teaching application, I will not be given a student teaching assignment.

Eligibility for Student Teaching

• Compliance with all of the stated admission and retention requirements

• Removal of all “I” or “X” grades

• Satisfy the faculty that he/she possesses the knowledge, skills and attributes which are necessary and desirable for successful teaching.

• A “C” or above in all education and secondary methods course

• Completion of all course requirements in the student’s major and minor(s). Requests for exceptions of this requirement will be reviewed by the student’s advisor and the Director of Field Experiences

• Have a 2.70 GPA or above overall, in the major, minor(s), Professional Education Sequence and the planned program and required cognates combined where applicable, with no grade of C or lower and only one repeat allowed in each category (5 total)

• Maintain minimum standards of behavior as prescribed in the section addressing professional integrity. (see Moral Turpitude)

Moral Turpitude:

• any intentional act prohibited by statute that has the effect of contributing to the delinquency of a minor; which constitutes child abuse or which otherwise involves a minor; which constitutes or involves a form of sexual conduct described or defined by statute; which involves trafficking in drugs or controlled substances; which involves pornographic materials; which involves wrongful entry, larceny, embezzlement or receiving stolen property; which involves perjury, bribery, graft, forgery, counterfeiting or smuggling; or which involves fraud, deceit or intentional dishonesty for purposes of personal gain.

2. I understand that all student teaching assignments are made

• by the School of Education and that the assignment is dependent upon the availability of suitable student teaching sites as determined by the School of Education. Student teaching assignments will not be made in the school district from which I have graduated, have close relatives involved, have children in the school district or have done significant subbing. Student teaching assignments will only be in approved sites which may not be available in areas requested. I will not attempt to make any part of these arrangements on my own initiative unless given permission by the Director of Field Experiences.

Assignments

• The Director of Field Experiences is responsible for all student teaching assignments. Although the prospective student teacher may express a preference, the final decision as to geographical area, school system and teacher is made by the Director of Field Experiences in cooperation with area schools.

Various patterns of assignments

• Most student teachers normally do a sixteen week assignment with one supervising teacher

• Some do a split assignment, generally eight weeks of the term with one teacher, and the following eight weeks with another. They may also split among different teachers for parts of the day throughout the semester.

• Special education students normally do the first eight weeks in their base certification area and the second eight weeks in a special education setting.

The advantages of a

• full term assignment are that a student teacher gets to develop a long term and in-depth experience with a teacher and a group of students.

• split assignment are that the student teacher gets to have a broader experience with different teachers, grade levels, subjects and/or settings.

Students in secondary education

• will first be interviewed by the advisor for their major who will make recommendations for placement to the Field Experience Office.

• are placed in the middle and/or high school level in the area of their majors, and also, if practical, in the area of their minors.

• physical education, art and music majors obtain a K-12 endorsement in their major on a secondary certificate, and may be assigned to an elementary, middle and/or secondary school.

Students are assigned to

• selected schools in the Upper Peninsula and Northeastern Wisconsin where we have student teaching agreements.

• other areas only by writing to the Director of Field Experiences. Financial considerations are not justification for a student to complete an assignment outside the designated areas. Students are required to pay additional costs for supervision.

Eligibility for student teaching out of area

• Student who desire to be placed where spouse is employed or in a school of 20% or more minority school population, and all of the following:

• There is an acceptable host institution willing to supervise the student teacher

• Students have a 3.0 or higher GPA in their major, minor and overall coursework.

• Submit two faculty letters of recommendation. If Secondary, one of the letters must be from a professor in your content area.

• to work with culturally and racially diverse students and to better develop a multicultural and global perspective. Students may apply to student teach overseas and in schools with 20% or more minority population anywhere in the United States.

3. & 4. I understand that I am

• responsible for securing living accommodations.

• to free myself of campus and work responsibilities during weekdays while student teaching to allow for a full-time commitment to teaching, but that I may work Friday 6:00 p.m. until Sunday 6:00 p.m. However, I may be asked to terminate such work should the activities interfere with my performance in student teaching.

5. & 6. I understand that

• I will not be permitted to enroll in courses other than student teaching, the student teaching seminar, classroom management and multicultural education during the semester I am student teaching, unless I have written permission from the Director of Field Experiences.

• it is my responsibility to submit all materials for the application for student teaching in complete and accurate form by the second Friday of the semester before I student teach, or I may not be assigned.

7. & 8. I understand that it is my responsibility

• to keep the Office of Field Experiences informed of any address, phone number, name and/or status change.

• to report to the Director of Field Experiences, as soon as possible, any grade or matter which would make me ineligible for student teaching. Failure to do so may result in denial to student teach.

9., 10. & 11. I understand that

• it is my responsibility to notify the Director of Field Experiences in writing at least 30 days in advance of my student teaching if I decide to withdraw my application for student teaching.

• I must pass the MTTC Basic Skills Tests before I can student teach.

• I must pass the appropriate MTTC subject area tests, CPR and First Aid training before I will be certified and that some states have additional requirements for teacher certification.

• the School of Education may only keep Teacher Education records for one year.

• all items are included and the forms are completed as directed. Please remember that application and eligibility requirements completed after the announced deadline may jeopardize the chances for a placement, as well as the location and/or grade level preference requested by the applicant.
