    Student Teaching Weekly Log

Directions: Answer these questions each week and email them to your student teaching

    supervisor by Sunday evening.

    Name: Megan Crossett Week: 14

    1. How did you spend your time this week? What responsibilities did you have?

    a. This week school was only in session on Monday and Tuesday. My mentor

teacher was absent on Monday, so I taught bell to bell with the support of a

substitute. On Tuesday, my mentor was back and resumed all of the teaching with

the exception of the morning meeting.

    2. What were your most satisfying experiences? What were your most challenging

    experiences?

    a. My most satisfying experience this week was teaching on Monday. Compared to

the previous Friday that I had taught bell to bell, Monday went much moresmoothly and I felt like the students were actually taking something away from

the lessons I taught. It was a good reminder for me that every day really is a new

day. Thats something I tell students all of the time. That each day is new and that

as the teacher, I will never hold past slip-ups over their heads. I guess this time, as

the teacher, it was more a reminder to maintain a positive attitude and embrace

the ability to try new teaching strategies after reflecting on Friday. I know that in

some fields, the ability to try, try again doesnt exist and Im happy that Ive

chosen a profession that lends itself to constant evolution.

    b. My most challenging experience this week was transitioning back from teaching

everything on Monday to teaching nothing on Tuesday. It was a weird hand off of

responsibility because I wasnt sure what my mentor still wanted me to teach and

it confused students (sometimes both of us would be trying to introduce a lesson

or give directions). I hope that in the next couple of weeks my mentor is more

vocal about what she wants my role in her room to be, so that when I am out of

her room completely, the students arent completely out of the loop. I had thought

that we had been pretty explicit about my mentors schedule and the shift of

responsibility, but in retrospect, I should have been reminding students each day

that my mentor was out to visit her family and that she would be back in two days

or one day, etc. Going forward, my mentor and I need to explicitly tell and remind

the class when my last day is and what that means for them as a class, so that

those students who do have a difficult time transitioning have some time toprocess.

    3. What are the plans for the upcoming week?

    a. This coming week, my mentor will resume teaching and I will continue to support

small groups. I will also be finalizing my two external observations with other

    teachers in the building.
