LA 3001: UNDERSTANDING & CREATING LANDSCAPE SPACE

THE SUBJECT OF THIS COURSE IS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE -- THE DESIGN DISCIPLINE THAT USES ASPECTS OF BOTH ART AND SCIENCE TO CREATE USEFUL AND MEANINGFUL OUTDOOR SPACES TO MEET SPECIFIC ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL NEEDS.

THE AIM OF THIS CLASS IS TO LEARN A PURPOSEFUL APPROACH TO THE DESIGN OF OUTDOOR SPACES FOR HUMAN USE AND HABITATION. USING 3-DIMENSIONAL MODELS, CASE STUDIES, READINGS, AND DISCUSSIONS, STUDENTS EXPLORE THE PHYSICAL AND EVOCATIVE PROPERTIES OF SPATIAL ENCLOSURE, USING THE BASIC PALETTE OF LANDFORM, VEGETATION, AND STRUCTURES TO GIVE PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, COGNITIVE AND SOCIAL DEFINITION TO THE PLACES WE CREATE.

STUDENTS BEGIN WITH BASIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES AND EXPERIMENT WITH GEOMETRIC FORM. THEY FURTHER DEVELOP THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF SPACE BY APPLYING METAPHOR AND MEANING AS A TOOL FOR SHAPING SPACE. AS THE SEMESTER PROGRESSES, STUDENTS BEGIN TO INTEGRATE THEIR IDEAS TOWARDS REAL-WORLD INSTALLATIONS. THEY BEGIN WORKING THROUGH THE SPECIFIC LENSES OF LANDFORM, VEGETATION, AND STRUCTURE, AND ULTIMATELY COMBINE THEIR WORK TO CREATE A FINAL COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN FOR AN URBAN PARK/PLAZA.
