today

why the topicstudent expectationscollaborationconnectivitystudent organizationshow they (and may be about to) affect design

Page 5: Student–centric law school design bricks, bytes, & continuous renovations march 2006 joan vorrasi - columbus school of law catholic university of america

why this as a ‘bricks & bytes’ topic

- increasing competitiveness- shifting student culture- evolving, ‘student –centered’ pedagogy- evolving technology for 3rd nature users

with design implications

changing expectations

much talk about the upcoming (Gen Y) generation

- learning is a social activity- highly connected- short on time – want it now / personally

convenient- technology goes beyond 2nd nature- used to being competed for- highly collaborative / seek peer learning- increasingly mobile- expect greater faculty contact

Page 8: Student–centric law school design bricks, bytes, & continuous renovations march 2006 joan vorrasi - columbus school of law catholic university of america

design implications?

average law school has grown from 140 nsf/fte in 1993 to 170nsf/fte in 2004

obviously not all students (lots of books and faculty too)

more space per student – examples:-classrooms (up from 16-18sf to 30+sf per student)-group study -career services-law review / law journal equity-student lounges (often regained)-food service/ coffee

Page 9: Student–centric law school design bricks, bytes, & continuous renovations march 2006 joan vorrasi - columbus school of law catholic university of america

other design occurrences - higher floor to floor heights for taller screens

for legibility of comparative text as digital use is pushed more rapidly by students

- increase in help desks for student digital tools

other emerging competitive moves:- health clubs / exercise rooms- daycare - housing
