Please ask the res-
pective university
for the language
requirements thatare necessary for
your study pro-
gramme. Usually your level of
German proficiency is suppo-
sed to be sufficient to easily
follow the classes and to ful-
fil the expected requirements.Your language skills have to be
already documented at the time of
application and enrolment. Usually
this is documented through a
passed language test, namely theDeutsche Sprachprfung fr den
Hochschulzugang auslndischer
Studienbewerber (DSH), TestDaF
or an equally recognised test. You
can find the required tests for the
respective study programme at:
Web: www.sprachnachweis.de

Visa Application
TIP: YOU CAN FIND MORE INFORMATION ON THIS TOPIC AT:
Web: www.auswaertiges-amt.de/diplo/de/WillkommeninD/EinreiseUndAufent-
halt/Visabestimmungen.html
For your entry with the purpose to study you need a study permit. Do
not entry as a tourist in any case since you cannot convert a
tourist visa into a study permit!
A visa permits you to start a study
programme in the Federal Republic
of Germany. Please inform yourselfabout the requirements and proce-
dures of the visa application at your
embassy or consulate in your home
county in due time, i.e. 3-6 months
before the expected entry.
In general the following papers are
required upon the visa application:
Avalidpassport
Aconfirmedapplicationora
note of authorisation of a Ger-
man university
Aproofoffinanceofatleast670
Euro a month
A visa is not required for citizens
of the EU or countries which have
signed special agreements. Thisincludes currently Honduras,
Iceland, Israel, Japan, Canada,
Lichtenstein, Monaco, Norway,
San Marino, Switzerland
and the United States of
America. These citizens can
apply for a residence permitat the foreigners registration
office in Rostock after their entry.
Therefore they still need a proof
of finance of at least 670 Euro
a month. Citizens of the EU will
receive a confirmation of the free
movement of persons.

Organising a
place in a
hall of residence
Accommodation in a room in
one of the Studentenwerks
hall of residence is uncom-
plicated and quite cheap.
Further information on hallsof residence, facilities, furniture
and prices can be found at:
Web: www.studentenwerk-rostock.de
Under the section Wohnen
(living) you can find all halls of
residence as well as the online ap-
plication. In case of any problems
you can also contact the emplo-
yees of this section via telephone
or email.
All rooms come with a data outlet
to connect to a PC or laptop. The
halls of residence are all connec-
ted with the campus network of
the university. This means that
you have the same access to the
network as if you were on campus, provided that you have registered
with an account in the particular
computer centre.
TIP: Due to the high demand for
rooms in the halls of residence
it is recommended to apply for
a hall of residence as early as
possible!

Calls and Phones
Public Telephones
The majority of public telepho-
nes are coin-operated phones.
Private Telephone Connection
There are many providers for landline,
mobile and internet connections. This
means a huge variety in prices, and
the choice between Pre-Paid-Calling
Cards and different plans/contracts.
Please check the duration of the plan/
contract under all circumstances!
Using the dialling codes of various
Call-by-Call providers, you can usually
call from a landline at a cheaper rate.
You can find an overview of these
providers here:Web:www.billiger-telefonieren.de
Note for residents of the halls of
residence of the student service
organisation Studentenwerk
Rostock:
Due to the existing technicalities in the
halls of residence, establishing a land-
line connection is in general unfortuna-
tely not possible. An alternative can
be using mobile phone providers who
offer a home zone as well as using
voice over IP for example via Skype.
TIP: If you just recently arrived and
have not yet signed a contract, you
can use Skype as well as a desktop
computer with internet connection
in the Starter-Caf during theopening hours (Mon to Fri 14h to 17h).

Cycling
Since Rostock is not a very big city
and many university institutions arescattered around the city, is recom-
mendable to buy a bicycle. Many
stretches of way can be mastered
more easily and faster by bicycle
than by public transportation.
Rostockssurroundingsarealsoat-tractive for longer biking tours with
its many cycle paths. Many bicycle
shops in the city are offering usedbicycles to moderate prices. Asked
the sales assistant and compare pri-
ces! Do also ask your German fellow
students maybe they can give you
some other tips about where to buy
a cheap bicycle.
TIP: At the beginning of every semester the Local ERASMUS Initiative
Rostock (LEI Rostock) is organising a bicycle market. Here you can get a
roadworthy bicycle for already 30 40 Euros. Additionally you have to
pay a deposit of 15 Euro for every bicycle. You will get this deposit back
if you return your bike in a sound condition to the students of LEI at the
end of your stay in Rostock. Further information can be found at:
