SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTWe are now well into Term 1 and you could be forgiven for thinking there were no summer holidays. We already have our first round of school representatives about to head off to the Far North Coast Swimming Carnival in Murwillumbah. We wish them every success.
The proposed upgrade of school facilities is also gaining momentum and we can expect early works on the project to begin by the end of this term with the main construction forecast to commence after June. The scope of the work includes upgrading the canteen area, a new library and senior learning space; a commercial kitchen and bistro area to support the delivery of our popular hospitality courses, a consolidation of science labs and teaching spaces to name a few. We can expect these works to disrupt the daily routine of the school moving forward but be assured we will be focused on maintaining uninterrupted learning time in all classes. Students, parents and community members who may be interested in viewing the concept plans and hearing more about the future direction of the school’s facilities are invited to information sessions at the school on March 2nd. Session times are from 8am – 9:30am or 3-5:30pm in the H Block.
Students are reminded that unless they are collecting a sibling from the Tweed South Public School they are to stay away from the school in the afternoon. If students are collecting their siblings they are to remain outside of the school grounds while waiting for them. This will minimise disruption to the operation of classes in the afternoons and demonstrate our respect for their right to learn.
Year 7 is settling in well and it is quite easy to see the confidence building in increasing numbers of students. Last week saw the commencement of this year’s peer support program where students from our Year 10 leadership group facilitate small group activities and work with Year 7 to build rapport and a sense of connection for them with the student body. We are very fortunate to have a team of young people who are willing to share their experience of high school and support our year 7 cohort. The program will run for the next 4 weeks in the lead up to the Year 7 Camp.
On March 2nd we will be holding our first contact meeting with students who are looking to enrol with us in 2021. Parents and children can expect a sausage sizzle, campus tours and then there will be a meeting with everyone before our potential students will meet up with current students and staff for a games session while parents workshop with staff to learn more about opportunities for and expectations of students at Tweed River High School. Please pass the word about the date and we look forward to meeting many of you on the night.
Wednesday will be photo day. The photo pack information will be distributed on Monday with the photos scheduled for Wednesday 26th, February. There will be a catch up day for those students who are absent on the day.
From time to time students waves of fads go through the community – “planking” would be an example. Sometimes they are funny or just silly, at other times they can be, inappropriate, unsafe or dangerous. Some of the current “pranks” or “dares” are the latter, an example would be “dacking”. Students have been warned about participating in these types of behaviours at school and while travelling to and from school and they can expect the school to employ appropriate consequences where they occur.

Tweed River High School Project update February 2020
Artist impression of library terrace
Investing in our schools
The NSW Government is investing $6.7 billion over four years to deliver more than 190 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. In addition, a record $1.3 billion is being spent on school maintenance over five years. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.
Project overview
Tweed River High School will be upgraded to provide new permanent teaching spaces and core facilities to cater for future enrolment growth in the area. The upgrade will ensure Tweed River High School students have access to innovative learning environments that support future focused teaching and learning practices.
The scope of work includes a new library, a dedicated senior learning environment, upgrade of the student canteen and outdoor eating spaces, extension of current hospitality teaching facilities, and addition of a commercial kitchen and bistro to enable kitchen-to-plate education and training.
Progress summary
Concept designs for the upgrade have been developed in consultation with staff, students and parents. Schematic designs are being prepared and the planning approval pathway is being developed.
A tender has been released for an early works package and a contractor will be engaged by early March. A main works tender package will be prepared once schematic designs have been completed.
Next steps
Early works (Stage 1) are forecast to commence in March 2020 and main works (Stage 2) in June 2020.
School information sessions
To find out more about the project and view the concept designs you are invited to attend a drop-in information session at the Tweed River High School Hall.
Information sessions will be held on Monday 2 March 2020 at the following times:

SPORT NEWSTWEED RIVER HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2020
The Annual Tweed River High School Swimming Carnival was held at the Oasis Swimming Complex in Banora Point on Monday 10th of February. We were very lucky with the weather and were able to get through the swimming program without interruption. It was great to see a large number of students still turning up to race or participate in novelty events to gain house points despite the weather conditions we had in the lead up to the carnival.
The Swimming House Championship was very close between 1st and 2nd, with Boyd able to secure first place due to outstanding participation in the novelty house events. The final House Championship Points: 1st Boyd 271

LIBRARY NEWS“There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” – Jacqueline KennedyAs teacher librarian, it is my role to keep students reading and encourage those who have little interest in books. We have an amazing range of fiction and non-fiction resources at Tweed River High School and we constantly purchase new books to support our students' literacy. We also have in excess of 35 fiction books for students with dyslexia as well as many 'quick reads' to support our younger readers.
Remember to come and see us in the library if there are books you would like us to purchase. We’d love to know what you love to read!
Japanese Manga and graphic novels are hugely popular again this year and we are receiving books weekly at the moment, so come and see our new shelves.
For the 2nd year in a row, our school is proud to have a Green Team. We ask students who care for the environment and would like to play a role to sign-on to the Green Team. We’re here to make a difference and throughout the year, we will be doing a few clean-ups, as more people pollute the environment than clean it. The more the merrier .... so please join us.

Compulsory School Attendance
Information for parents
Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.
What are my legal responsibilities?
Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age. The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled at, and regularly attend school, or, are registered with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards for homeschooling.
Once enrolled, children are required to attend school each day it is open for students.
The importance of arriving on time
Arriving at school and class on time:
• Ensures that students do not miss
out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day
• Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
• Give students time to greet their friends before class
• Reduces classroom disruption
Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents.
What if my child has to be away from school?
On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
• being sick, or having an
infectious disease • having an unavoidable medical
appointment • being required to attend a
recognised religious holiday • exceptional or urgent family
circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)
Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school may contact you to discuss the absence.
Principals may decline to accept an explanation that you have provided if they do not believe the absence is in the best interest of your child. In these circumstances your child’s absence would be recorded as unjustified. When this happens the principal will discuss their decision with you and the reasons why.
Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when frequent or long term absences are explained as being due to illness. Principals may also seek parental permission to speak with medical specialists to obtain information to collaboratively develop a health care plan to support your child. If the request is denied, the principal can record the absences as unjustified.
Travel
Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, discuss this with your child’s school principal. An Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.
In some circumstances students may be eligible to enrol in distance education for travel periods over 50 school days. This should be discussed with your child’s school principal.

Alcohol and Young People Trends relating to young people and alcohol are improving. Specifically, there has been an increase in the age at which young people first try alcohol, from an average of 14.8 years in 1995 to 16.1 years in 20161. Also, fewer people aged 12–17 are drinking alcohol and the proportion abstaining from alcohol increased significantly between 2013 and 2016 (from 72% to 82%). However, whilst more young people aged between 12 to 17 years of age are abstaining from alcohol than in previous years, in 2016 almost four and a half million people in Australia aged 14 or older (22%) reported being a victim of an alcohol related incident.2 Current research suggests the brain is not fully developed until about 25 years of age. Binge drinking alcohol before this age can result in permanent brain damage3, affecting memory, learning, decision making and problem solving. For more information on the effect of alcohol on the developing brain, http://darta.net.au/factsheets/ Recognising the serious impact of alcohol on young people, NSW Office of Liquor and Gaming have changed the laws regarding supply of alcohol to young people. Under Section 117 of the New South Wales Liquor Act 2007 it is illegal to supply alcohol to people aged under 18 years in a private home unless it is supplied by: the child’s parent or guardian, or an adult who has the approval of the child’s parent or guardian. A person convicted of secondary supply in NSW can be fined up to $11 000 for each underage drinker involved. Mental health Drinking at a young age increases the risk of mental health problems. Supporting Provisional Drivers (P1 & P2)
A P1 licence must be held for at least 12 months. Drivers progress to the P2 licence for a minimum of 24 months.
P2 licence holders will be required to stay on their P2 licence for an additional 6 months period each time they receive a suspension for unsafe driving behaviours.
P1 drivers may drive up to 90km/h and for P2 drivers 100km/h A zero blood alcohol limit applies to all L, P1 and P2 licence holders. This means NO ALCOHOL before driving. This may include drinking on the night before driving as the body may not clear all alcohol drunk from the blood stream. P1 and P2 licence holders must not use any function of a mobile phone while driving or riding, or when stationary but not parked. Therefore, making or answering calls, playing music or using as a navigational device is prohibited, even hands-free or loudspeaker. P1 drivers under the age of 25 can only carry one passenger under 21 between the hours of 11pm and 5am (some exemptions apply) P1 and P2 drivers are banned from driving high-performance vehicles that have power to tare mass ratios of greater than 130kW per tonne, modified engines that need to be approved by an engineer or other vehicles classified as high performance. For more information about the new rules for turbo, supercharged and v8 vehicles, see the Centre for Road Safety Website. http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au Young drivers are developing drivers. Young drivers are often in the oldest and least safe vehicles. Help your new driver get into the safest vehicle in your price range. Support them by ensuring the vehicles they drive have a high safety rating that can prevent severe injury to people involved in crashes. For new cars, visit Australasian New Car Assessment Program (www.ancap.com.au). For used cars, check the Used Car Safety Rating (www.howsafeisyourcar.com.au) Consider swapping cars with the young driver in your house: parents or carers with more driver experience often have safer cars than new drivers with less experience. Changes from November 2017: Tips for Parents Remember your teenager is still very new to driving. Continue to encourage safe driving by: Ensuring they organise their time so they can stick to posted speed limits and adapt to driving conditions, such as rain. Getting them to plan their night before they leave. Ensuring they observe their license conditions. Slowly increasing the amount of independent night driving – this is a time when young drivers are more likely to crash. Gradually allowing them to increase the number of passengers in the car once they have progressed to the P2 stage. Young drivers are at considerable risk during their first year of solo driving (P1). Delay exclusive access to vehicles for new drivers. Continue to regulate and supervise P plate drivers. Reinforce safety messages and discuss planning ahead. Before your teenager goes out, particularly when partying, spend some time discussing options for getting there and back home safely. Some ideas for young people to consider: Leave the car at home. Catch a bus – check timetables to avoid waiting times at bus stops. Catch a taxi or a share ride service (e.g. Uber): a shared maxi taxi is a cheaper option. Put the taxi phone number in their phone address book. Plan the cost of the taxi (you can ring a taxi company and get a quote). Stay overnight with a friend. Arrange to be dropped off and picked up by a parent or other responsible adult.
