However, students weren’t as impressed with e-mail:

The SG Information Technology Officer sent an email to our office asking that we upgrade the student e-mail system to “greatly aid students who use PAWS as their primary e-mail client.”

Students requested improved functionality including multiple attachments, a signature block, a personal address book & group calendaring.

“When I am forced to use the PAWS e-mail (e.g. when accessing via the web from remote locations), I am amazed that such a frustrating, horrible, primitive, user-unfriendly e-mail system hasn't been replaced or at least significantly improved by now. . “

Going Wireless

In 2003 Tech Fee funded the installation of 200 wireless access points in high traffic areas.

In 2004 Tech Fee funded an additional 200 access points to provide more ubiquitous coverage.

Tech Fee pays the annual node charges of $86,400 for these access points.

Currently LSU has over 1500 access points.

Gear to Geaux History

The program was started in 2003 The initial program only had 12 laptops and 50 wireless cards. The items were circulated by ITS and students could only use the laptops for two

hours and could not leave the library. In 2005 we partnered with the library to have them circulate the items and they

could collect and keep the fines revenue. In Fall of 2005 we added 10 additional laptops and changed the circulation to

allow students to check them out for up to three days with one renewal. In January 2006 we acquired 50 IBM laptops from those donated in support of

hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. ITS decided to put these machines into the library circulation program. This was a big hit.

In the Fall of 2006 we replaced the twelve additional machines, but with 6 windows compatible machines and 6 ibooks. We also added digital cameras and camcorders.

In the Fall of 2007 we added 6 additional ibooks and 6 new windows machines. The program continues to be nearly 100 percent checked out on any given day.

Virtual Lab Concept piloted in 2005 with an

initial investment of $150,00. Great Success.

Access to all students in 2006 with very little marketing.

Added additional terminal servers to the backend in 2007.

It provides students thin client access to high-end software not available for download from TigerWare.

Software may be used from any Web browser.

Students able to save files to their local drives, shared drives, and print to their local printer.
