THE ARTERY 2015
Untitled by Eudomar Lopez (interior) The mission of the William Paterson University Department of Art is to teach students visual literacy within a broad cultural and historical context. The department provides students the opportunities to explore self-expression and scholarship, build knowledge and acquire skills, and develop an understanding of how creativity is articulated through fine art and design. Our purpose is to empower students with lives rich in artistic expression and professional achievement that will contribute to a diverse and democratic society.

THE ARTERY 2015
Every spring semester the Student Art Association organizes an exhibition of student work. The students submit work, and the Student Art Association officers invite faculty from the areas of 2D, 3D and art history to serve as a jury. The content of the exhibition is selected, and awards are given in every category.
The exhibition brings together the wide variety of mediums that constitute the visual arts, from painting to graphic design, sculpture and animation, photography and printmaking, and everything in-between. We encounter abstraction and figuration, art for the sake of art as well as its practical applications. In these pieces we see our students not only developing and fine tuning their skill
sets, but also constructing a way of seeing the world and sharing it with the public. The late Ben Shahn, painter, graphic artist, photographer and muralist, wrote:
Know all that you can about art, and by all means have opinions. Never be afraid to become embroiled in art or life or politics; never be afraid to learn to draw or paint better than you already do; and never be afraid to undertake any kind of art at all, however exalted or however common, but do it with distinction. (The Shape of Content, 1957, p. 114)
We are confident that the works in this exhibition and publication, reflect with distinction the visions and talents of the art students at William Paterson University.
