From the Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome back for Term 2 – this is another busy term, with many exciting learning opportunities for students. ANZAC Day Wednesday Heatherhill Primary School commemorat-ed ANZAC Day in a very moving and special ceremony. The significance of ANZAC Day has evolved over time, from its creation in 1916 to mark the anniversary of the battle of Gallipoli, to its more modern understand-ing as a day of national remembrance. We set aside this day to remember not only those who fell at Gallip-oli, but every man and woman who has fought and served to protect Australia. Caszius and Dara (School Captains) spoke about the symbols of ANZAC. Jordan, (School Vice- Captain) led the “Ode of Remembrance”. Miss Stephens explained the purpose of the Poppy Wall and thanked everyone for making poppies that made up the wall. The whole school listened to “The Last Post”, a minute’s silence and “The Rouse”. Teuila and Hannah sang the New Zealand National Anthem, “God Bless New Zealand” and Memphis and Trish led the school in singing Australia’s National Anthem, “Advance Australia Fair”. interesting, informative and exciting activities have been

planned for the students. Mrs Townsend, Miss Fran, Miss

Dare and Miss Spence have an excellent Camp program

planned for the students.

Sunsmart FROM MAY PUT SUNHATS AWAY

Autumn leaves are falling and so are Victoria’s ultraviolet (UV) levels - so it’s time to start thinking about your sun exposure and vitamin D over winter. The sun’s UV is the best natural source of vitamin D. When UV levels fall during Victoria’s winter months, sun protection is generally not required. In fact, it’s a good time of year to make an effort to get some midday winter sun exposure to help your body make vitamin D. There are some exceptions where sun protection is still required including if you are near highly reflective surfaces such as snow, outside for extended periods or in a location where the UV level reaches 3 and above. How much sun is enough for vitamin D? During the winter months, most Victorians need 2-3 hours of midday winter sun exposure to the face, arms and hands (or equivalent area of skin) spread over the week. Adults and children with naturally very dark skin (skin that rarely or never burns) may need three to six times this amount. Daily exercise will also assist your body with pro-duction of vitamin D so encourage plenty of active out-door play! Students do not wear hats until 1st September. Festival of Thought – follow up Michelle and David from the Philosophy Club have written a wonderful article about the Festival of Thought on their website. They were thrilled with the Festival of Thought which came about from their “Big Questions” program in 2014. At Heatherhill, we were motivated by the philo-sophical discussion and thinking to create learning oppor-tunities for our students, which culminated in The Festival of Thought. Please have a look (link below) – I am sure you will feel very proud of our school! http://thephilosophyclub.com.au/2015/04/14/we-lit-a-fire/ Best wishes, Mary Verwey
