A. This chapter opens in the city of Caesarea. This city was located about thirty miles north of Joppa.

B. Cornelius is now the character of focus. He was a Roman military officer. He was a Centurion. A Centurion had the

C. In Chapter 10 we find the beginning of one of the great turning points of history. God is about to place His focus on winning Gentiles to Christ.

D. Most theologians would say Cornelius was the first Gentile that became a part of the Body of Christ. However, I do not believe the Bible would support that position.

Page 8: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

1. The Bible in Acts 8:26-38 records the encounter Philip had with the Ethiopian eunuch who was a Black man and a Gentile. This black man was the first Gentile that accepted Christ as savior according to the scriptures.

27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the

28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.

Acts 8:26-38

29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

Acts 8:26-38

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

Acts 8:26-38

32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

Page 17: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Acts 8:26-38

33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

Acts 8:26-38

34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

Page 19: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

Page 20: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Acts 8:26-38

36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

E. In Acts Chapter 10 we are faced with two great questions. The first question is was Cornelius saved before Peter came to his

Page 24: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Studies in Acts

E. house; if we say Cornelius was not saved as some people do; the next question is does God hear a sinners prayers?

Page 25: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

1. Whether he was a saved man is open to question. Those who say he was saved refer to verse 2.

Page 26: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Acts 10:1

1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort,

Page 27: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Acts 10:2

2 a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God.

Page 28: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Studies in Acts

F. In verse 2 we are told several key things about Cornelius.

Page 29: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

1. He was a devout man. Devout meaning he was pious, dedicated and serious in his search for God.

Page 30: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

2. He feared (reverenced) God and he taught his family to fear God too.

Page 31: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

3. He was generous in his giving to the impoverished Jewish people.

Page 32: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

4. He had a committed and consistent prayer life.

Page 33: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Studies in Acts

G. Those who say he was saved refer to Acts 10:2 and

Page 34: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Acts 10:35

But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

Page 35: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

1. Those who say Cornelius was not saved point to Acts 11:14 where the angel is quoted as promising him that Peter would tell him words whereby he might be saved,

Page 36: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Acts 11:14

Who shall tell thee words, where by thou and all thy house shall be saved.

Page 37: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Studies in Acts

H. . If Peter was to give Cornelius the only message that could save him which no doubt was the Gospel is a strong indication

Page 38: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Studies in Acts

H. that he was not saved before Peter came to his house.

Page 39: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Studies in Acts

I. Being devout does not save a man. Unsaved men are said to be devout but they were only dutiful to their religion. The Bible in Acts 2:5 says

Page 40: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Acts 2:5

And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

Page 41: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

1. They were devout men but they did not know God.

Page 42: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Studies in Acts

J. Having fear and reverence for God will not cause a man to be saved. The bible in James 2:19 says

Page 43: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

James 2:19

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well; the devils also believer, and tremble.

Page 44: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

1. Does giving prove a man is saved:

Page 45: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

1 Cor. 13:3

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Page 46: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

2. Does praying prove a man is saved:

Page 47: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

St. Matt 6:5

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the

corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Page 49: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

St. Luke 18:9-14

9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:

Page 50: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

St. Luke 18:9-14

10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

Page 51: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

St. Luke 18:9-14

11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

Page 52: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

St. Luke 18:9-14

12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

Page 53: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

St. Luke 18:9-14

13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

Page 54: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

St. Luke 18:9-14 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

K. No matter how committed and dedicated a man might be to religious practices he cannot be saved without hearing and believing the Gospel.

Page 56: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Studies in Acts

L One may ask about people who never had a chance to hear the Gospel; will they be lost? I personally believe God knows the heart of every man and I believe God

Page 57: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

L knows those who would have accepted Christ had they been given the opportunity to do so. I further believe God will provide a way for them to be saved.

Page 58: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Acts 10:3

About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come in and say to him, “Cornelius.”

Acts 10:4

And he stared at him in terror and said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.

M We note although Cornelius had not accepted Christ as savior at this point, God had heard his prayer. This proves

Page 61: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

M God will under some circumstances hear and answer a sinners prayer.

Studies in ActsIn my view Cornelius is an

example of a man who lived up to the light, which God gave him. As he walked in all he knew to do God honored him by revealing to

him the true light of the Gospel. God also gave him the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

N An angel appears telling Cornelius to send for Peter at Joppa. There are three factors necessary for the salvation of a sinner.

Page 91: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

1. The sprit of God must be involved.

Page 92: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

St. John 16:8

8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Page 93: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

2. The word of God must be heard.

Page 94: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Romans 10:17

17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Page 95: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

3. There has to be someone to preach the gospel.

Page 96: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Romans 10:14

14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they

time process involved when God is leading us to step into something we would not otherwise do without His leading.

Page 101: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Studies in ActsGod’s timing is always perfect. God can and will synchronize the events of the lives of His people. The word synchronize is an

Page 102: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012

Studies in Actsinteresting word. It means to cause to occur or operate with exact coincidence in time or rate; to cause, to occur or operate at the same

Page 103: Studies in Book of Acts Chapter 10:1-8 Apostle Ronald C Hill Sr. January 4-7, 2012
