Dream Hotel / Studio Puisto Architects

PRECENDENT CASE

Page 7: Studio fire journal 2015

The Dream Hotel was designed and constructed with a tight schedule and limited budget. To achieve the best result, design solutions were developed in tight cooperation between the architects, client, constructor and furniture manufacturer. Construction started in the spring of 2014 and the Dream Hotel opened its doors in the beginning of August.

To create a peaceful warm atmosphere and at the same time use materials responsibly, there is an extensive use of natural materials. The rooms are covered in locally sourced wood, the wall to wall carpeting of the public space is made of sisal, the sound insulation in between the rooms is made of wood fibers and all wooden surfaces are treated with natural oils.

With the Dream Hotel the architects have made a unique hotel concept, blurring the lines between a hotel and a hostel. Rather than full filling the conventional hotel standards it tries to offer everything that a guests really needs for a good nights sleep.

PRECENDENT CASE

Page 9: Studio fire journal 2015

The detached house includes 14 hotel rooms of +/-30 m2 and a wellness area. Its location depends mainly on an existing building that needs to be preserved.

Furthermore, the building is constructed according to the remarkable trees, the close views on the park, distant views on the opposite slope.

The wood is present in all its forms and shapes, not only on a structural level but also in the cedar cladding on the outside and the cherry wood cladding on the inside. The existing hotel is transformed in order to offer 3 more spacious rooms and two seminar rooms.

Prahran Hotel / Techne Architects

PRECENDENT CASE

Page 11: Studio fire journal 2015

The Prahran Hotel is a substantial two storey corner pub with a striking streamlined art deco facade. The rear of the venue had a poorly proportioned, internalised single storey extension and the clients brief for the project called to demolish and replace it with a dra-matic double height space with a central courtyard.

The use of large stacked concrete pipes for the street facade of the addition struck a chord for multiple reasons: they have a depth and can be interactive, they have a dramatic, sculptural quality, they refer-ence existing internal circular motifs and they suggest stacked kegs or barrels.

Whilst the space has the appeal of some spatial drama, the design’s success will be measured by the quality of the ambience and intimacy of the interior. Much effort was made to ensure that patrons have a variety of ways of gathering: private spaces contrast more social areas, there are places for couples and larger groups, and the circulation loops through both levels which encourages a voyeuristic procession through the old and new areas of the pub.

FIRST TRY OF THE MASSING IN RESPONSE TO THE SITE

-Different set back

-Different level different

-Different material

-Different location of space

I used so many different item into the draft model because I want it can stand out from the surrounding building so as to provide a smart look to it and the set back and level dif-ferent can provide some more view to the users inside. The different in material can get a different feeling for the build-ing. And the different location of space can provide different

COMMENT

-The form is a bit complicated

-The proportion of the building may need some more consideratoin

-The idea of interlocking is good

-The use of different material is good

So I may go back and change my model into a more simple form, and readjust the proportion of the interlocking massing. And further consider what material is going to be used in this motel so as to create different spatial feeling in different spaces.

Form DevelopmentBy Refining the cad models I made in the pervious weeks, I’m now trying to keep the form as simple as I could so as to have a better respone with the re-develop site area. From the site study, I found that the building style in this area is not as fancy as the city. I want to keep this simple building style in my design, so I used the basic geometry - square as my building form. The other reason of using this form is because the site is a perfect square and create a better site respone to the site. Also, with this kind of form, I can design my room in a modular girds so the wall inside can easily being alinged and the room inside can have a more flexible layout in it since there won’t have any odd angle inside so we can fully untilised the tiny site like this.

PLAN & SKETCHES

INTERIUM PRESENTATION

THINGS DO GOOD... 1. Nice sketches showed the spatial atmosphere inside and out

2. The site plan showed the culculation of the citizens

3. Easy follow for the diagrams in form making

4. Floor plan is detail enough at this stage with furniture

5. Good to show with the site context 6. Line work in section worked well

7. Good to know how the motel work

8. The suitroom is workable so far

THINGS TO IMPROVE...

1. Use the site plan!!!!!

2. The Bulky stuffs should be removed

3. The colour used in the Street section should be stronger

4. There should be a site plan with the section line

5. Should talk more about the programs inside

6. The facade section didn’t really look so good

7. The wall in the section should be in black colour

8. The entry is too tiny so far

Zoning

Because this is not a normal motel but one with the conference room, DSI offices and also the restaurant. Therefore, I tried to create a sense of comfort to all of the users in this motel by having a careful thought about the zoning inside the building.

People who are going to live in the motel will come in from the lobby and check in in the reception. People who are coming to meet up their friend will wait at the lounge. Since all the public people can go to this area so I classified this as my open space.

People who are going to have conference and meal in the motel will come in and they will hang around in the first and second level. And these is not for all the citi-zen in here so it is a semi open space.

Finally, I setted the top part of the motel as private because this is only for the people who are going to live and work here to use. They might want a more enclosed area to have some private time and work without any disruption.

In this case, the private space and the open space is separated by the semi-open space so as to avoide the noise given out by the public from getting into the private zone.

WORK HARD n DREAM BIG. This is my motto after I got into architectural study. Although it makes me busy and gives me some pressure throughout the semes-ter, what I have done in here is far more than my expectation. It was quite con-fusing sometimes when the design which you pay a lot of effort on was banned by the tutor but it always provides chances for you to think it in a better way and so do I. It was really incredible that I can find my dream here and the feeling was so cool. I found my way and I really enjoyed studying in this subject. There is nothing better than doing study with my dream.

I really want to achieve a higher level and learn as much as I can. So I can do more contributions to the society and give some more different to the citizens. As the city style in Hong Kong, the place I grew is worsening, people are full of dissatisfaction and most of the people are actually not doing what they want, the passion of life or meaning of life is being twisted. People in the same tow-er never try to know each other, the anger toward the government grow in the days and what they are looking for is just an isolated block from the society. And I think I should do something to it, even just a little bit of it.

In previous studio, I did not work too much on section and internal spacial de-sign so these things are quite new to me when I was required to make more detail. While I was doing the detail stuffs, I found that I can go in depth into my building and this can let me have a better understanding of it. Since architecture is not just a sculpture for us to look at, we have to consider how the people can have a better experience inside the building. In order to provide a better living style to them.

In this semester, I keep evolving my design in the same concept which is the interlocking boxes. The reason I used perfect square in my design is that I think the personality of the site is so strong and this is a perfect square as well so once I saw the site, I knew my design should be a box like shape so as to have a better site response and fully utilize the site area. I hope the final product did not fail your expectation.

Started from the day I chose architecture study as my road. I find my target here, which is do better design to the city and make a better living environment for the people. And this is what we should do, as a professional.
