STRUCTURAL | Denari has implemented his iconic V-shaped columns on the lower floor which provides lateral support in case of earthquakes.

The V-Columns and glass walls give the addition of the house a floating sensation.

Alan Voo House - Neil Denari In Collaboration with Cody Jew

CRITICAL POSITION | Neil Denari presents his contemporary worldview through a few different methods. First, he uses dynamic symmetry created through polygonal geometry. Second is the use of modern materials such as steel, glass, and smoothened stucco that integrate function and design aesthetics. Lastly, he utilizes continuous surfaces with smooth finishes that contribute to a fabricated, contemporary appearance.

SITE ANALYSIS | The old house was a key site element that Denari had to integrate into his design. The addition strongly contrasts not only the conventional neighbourhood but also the portion of the house left untouched during renovation. The design worked with numerous large mature trees to provide privacy and framed views.

ORGANIZING PRINCIPLES | The addition is a strong, contemporary counterpoint to the old, suburban part of the house. The house is gridded in a quadrilateral system, with the old being a clusters of tightly packed rectangular rooms, and the new being constrastingly open.

PLAN TO SECTION | Both the cluster of rooms and open, flowing rooms utilize an underlying grid system. The section shows the extent of openness and flow as you can look straight through from the front door to the end of the linear upper floor.

Page 5: Studio I Portfolio · Vertical Smoothouse Corrugated Duct House STRUCTURAL ... Low Density Residential Vacant Green Space Graph Sources: 2010-2015 World Weather and Climate Information;

MATERIAL ORDER | Smoothened stucco, large glass windows, and steel columns have been used to accentuate the contemporary look of the house.

SPATIAL ORDER | The old section of the house is organized in a cluster of rooms while the new and renovated areas are in an open, linear formation.

PUBLIC/PRIVATE THRESHOLDS | The public dining room, kitchen, and open air living room are the shared family spaces that are connected through circulation; whereas the private bedrooms diverge from the main circulation.

Page 6: Studio I Portfolio · Vertical Smoothouse Corrugated Duct House STRUCTURAL ... Low Density Residential Vacant Green Space Graph Sources: 2010-2015 World Weather and Climate Information;

PROGRAM LOGIC & CIRCULATION | The private bedrooms of the family have been placed on opposite ends of each other as well as diverging from the main public circulation that connects the family spaces.

The kitchen is spatially related to all the other areas in the house, making it the central part of the house.

Hierarchy is given to the master bedroom.

RELATIONSHIP OF INSIDE TO OUTSIDE | The large glass panels on the lower floor open to the backyard patio, creating a visibly and physically permeable façade.Natural light comes through the large glass windows and skylights, making the house feel more spacious.

PARTI | The parti embodies the contemporary concepts of Denari’s worldview. There is a continuous flow of surfaces and polygonal lines that contrast the orthogonal.

Denari also places high importance on the practice of craft and the use of technology to enhance but never to take over the design, and therefore obsessively produces hand drawings before moving onto the computer.

the design of a viewing platform that provides a novel experience of the site.

SITE ESSENCE | When a breeze flows through the site, the rustling of the leaves outweigh the humming of the Crowchild Bridge in the distance. And when you sit down near a tree, it’s a getaway from the rush of urban life. Rather than the fast paced living that is our city, the site invites you into a slow-paced world.

PRECEDENT FRAGMENT AND PROCESS | To further embrace this slowness, the Alan Voo House inspires me to use a smooth continuous surface with simple polygonal angles and shapes. The way this surface unfolds down the hill emulates the subtle, relaxed flowing of the river in Franz Johnston’s Threshold of Spring.

To tune into Calgary’s distinctive seasons, the intervention sits low so that urban sounds pass over you while you enjoy a picnic at the level of the grass during the summer. The sheltering fold keeps you dry in the spring as your gaze is directed to the trees versus the whizzing of the cyclists behind you. The white surface serves as a canvas for colour in the fall and in the winter, it allows you to get ready on the side while leaving plenty of room for tobogganing.

WEEKDAY

WEEKEND

TOTAL

typical WEEKDAYCoral wakes up bright at early at 6:00am but doesn’t actually get up until 7:00pm. First thing she does is quench her thirst with a healthy habit of drinking a glass of water from the kitchen. Next, she starts her coffee maker so it’ll be ready to after brushing her teeth and shower, it’s all about efficiency! It’s now 7:30am and Coral makes a quick but healthy breakfast and brings it to the living room to eat in silence. When she’s done, her studious self heads straight to her computer desk to work on home-work or study with headphones on until 9:30. Now it’s time to drive or bike to school depending on the weather and really, just what she feels like, usually biking.

At 5:00pm, she comes back home, turns on the music on the speakers and makes a healthy snack. When the clock hits 6:00pm, Coral heads out the door to exercise either at the gym or to cycle around the neighborhood. At 8:00pm, she comes back and showers immediately, her second shower of the day as cleanliness is a priority. Afterwards, she goes to the computer room for some downtime. She could play for hours on the piano or the drums if there isn’t a load of homework waiting for her. When she feels hungry at 9pm, she heats up the dinner she prepared on the weekend. Before heading to bed at 10:30pm, she either watches tv or reads. The entire weekday is scheduled and ritualistic just as much as school is.

typical WEEKENDToday, Coral wakes up at around 9am, a time which morning people consider as ‘late’. Since it’s the weekend, her morning routine is done at a sluggish pace and breakfast doesn’t get made until 10am. Once she’s full, she exits the living room and goes on her weekly trip to the supermarket. At around 11:30am, she’ll come back with groceries and sit down and make to-do lists. Afterwards, a relieved and organized Coral prepares her lunches and dinners for the week ahead. Finally, she gets to sit down with a meal in front of the tv at half past noon. Finishing up at 1:30, Coral will take a one hour mid-day nap.

All refreshed from the nap, Coral gets working on cleaning the house and doing laundry til 5:30. The weekend is no exception for Coral as she hits the gym or goes cycling until 7:30. She returns home for a brief moment for her second shower of the day as usual before heading out to the movies until 10pm. Upon returning, she brushes her teeth and passes out at 10:30pm. The weekend is a still a struc-tured day although the time is is loosely followed. GARAGE

CLIENT 2 : TREE EDGEphysical site attribute

THE INSPIRATION: The collective trunks of trees are too often overlooked. The paper birch tree is ot only native to Canada, but they possess a winter interest like no other. The bark peels like paper during the winter exhibiting its seasonal beauty. The collective of vertical growths also deeply enhances the exquisite glare of the sun.

perspective |

On the other side, the entire tree in is in view yet ignored. We

instead focus on what is framed. In the upper left, we barely

notice the presence of the bird visually, but perhaps there is

sound.

| presence

Framing different portions of the tree edge stirs up curiosty

and a focus on the detail.

The possibility of altering perspective by raising the human scale to the ‘eye level’ of the trees

emulates the experience of the wavering tip tops of the trees.

The spatial density of the tree edge dramatically changes due

to perspective. Here, the collective of trees are dense and

impermeable.

Upclose, they appear as individuals, they look sparse and

permeable.

At an angle, the collective of trees read as semi-permeable.

The trees can be screened to strongly alter a sense of

recognition, familiarity, and reality. Seeing what you think you know through a different

lens.

Peering into our other senses, screening edits the trees into a

silhouette. We rely on smell, sound, silhouette outlines, and any fragment penetrating the

screen to allow touching.

The presence of light can be felt through both artificial and natural means. The angle of the sun throughout the seasons alters the ground and ambient temperature. The recipient also matters, the larger the glazing plane, the warmer the interior air mass

will be. The same effect will not be achieved if the same surface area of glazing is spread over many fragments. A lower relative humidity level will also feel cooler to the human body due to increased perspiration.

Knowing all the above, it is possible to manipulate abosulate humidity and refract light to achieve the desired temperature.THER

PLAN AND SECTION ORDER| Speaking to Coral, she exhibits the cultural typology typical of North American society, a high need for space. Anthropologist Edward T. Hall terms the study of how people are concerned about space and our relationship within it, proxemics. This includes smaller territorial space such as personal space.

Rather than to challenge this notion of comfort, it was decided to enhance this gradual spectrum of public and private separation., therefore becoming the driving force of the program order. Coral is also a very routine person, so the highlighted journey from the very private to the very public every morning and the reverse as she winds down to end her days is an important promenade the design considers.

CONCEPT AND FORM GENERATION| The tree canopy was translated into a geometric form that generated the idea behind the exterior mono-skin. This was not only an influence from Neil Denari’s continuous surfaces but also my personal worldview.

The three experiential stages of pure shadow, dappled light, to pure light correlated with the gradation of private to public. This was one of the determinants of the placement of perforations in the shell of the house.

All three clients share an indirect relationship based on the ‘presence’ of each other. Such as the increased warmth from the sun as Coral moves from the dark to the light, and the awareness of the changing tree edge as autumn leaves fall on the white canvas-like surfaces of the house.

TECTONIC AND MATERIAL ORDER| The Ford installation not only showcases beauty but also a strategy to achieve the desired experiential stages, especially the dappled light effect. In the study models on the right, it was determined to create perforations in the surface of the triangles rather than the apexes due to structural integrity.

The form brings restrictions to available materials: a steel skeleton and non-relfective white Alucobond aluminum composite panelling is the basis of the shell structure, while Nanawall technologies such as the edge-to-edge bifolding doors will create the best ‘pure light’ experience while maintaining a level of insulation suitable for Calgary winters.

PLACEMENT ON THE SITE | Similar to the Getaway Ribbon in Project 02b, the views are directed towards the vegatation and the Bow River in the distant.

Special requests by Client I were considered such as a living space and master bedroom that is dark in the evening and nightime to aid in the transition to relaxation. This was the reasoning behind placing the large patio bifolding doors specifically on the Northeastern side and a solid wall on the Northwestern side.

Further considerations would be the angles of the glazing such as certain angles during the coldest winter day that would bring in maximum warmth by determining
