Un equipo de treinta estudiantes de arqui-tectura del Estudio Tom Emerson en la ETH Zurich, han diseñado y construido un pa-bellón para Manifesta 11, „the nomadic“, en la Bienal Europea de Arte Contempo-ráneo. Flotando en el lago, como telón de fondo para el centro de la ciudad, el “Pabellón de Reflexiones” sirve como foro público para la bienal: un punto de en-cuentro y una sala de cine donde se pro-yectan películas producidas como parte de la bienal, que se refleja en la piscina pública, abierta durante el día.

A team of thirty architecture students from Studio Tom Emerson at ETH Zurich have designed and built a pavilion for Manifesta 11, the nomadic, European biennial of contemporary art. Floating in the lake against the backdrop of the city centre, the Pavillon of Reflections serves as the biennial’s public forum: as a meet-ing point, as a cinema for screening films produced as part of the biennial, reflect-ed in the public swimming bath, open to the public during the day.

Una isla de madera, dispuesta como un fragmento íntimo en medio del espacio urbano, rodeado por cinco edificios: una torre, una tribuna, un bar, una terraza con cabinas, una piscina central con pantalla de cine y tres series de pasos que condu-cen al lago. Junto con la torre, los techos volumétricos sobre la barra se construyen a partir de un perfil distinto de los techos de celosía de madera.

A timber island, arrange like a fragment of intimate urban space enclosed by five buildings: a tower, a tribune, a bar, a sun deck with changing cubicles be-low, a central pool with cinema screen above, and three generous sets of steps that lead into the lake. Together with the tower, the volumetric roofs over the bar are built up from a distinct profile of tim-ber lattice roofs.

Bajo la dirección de Tom Emerson y líderes de proyectos Boris Gusic y Adrian Heusser, 32 estudiantes de arquitectura de la ETH Zurich concibieron y construyeron colecti-vamente el pabellón. El proyecto se inició con un concurso de ideas entre pequeños grupos de estudiantes, de los cuales se identificaron y desarrollaron las ideas más prometedoras. La organización en equi-pos más pequeños, trabajaron en diferen-tes escalas, considerando su posición en el lago, con prototipos a escala de hasta 1:1. Así como el proceso de diseño, las téc-nicas de construcción empleadas fueron democráticas: el pabellón está hecho casi en su totalidad de madera (abeto europeo) y todas las juntas se han diseña-do para ser atornilladas. Los estudiantes trabajaron durante diez meses para llevar a cabo esta obra de arquitectura edifi-cable, involucrando técnicos y distintas dimensiones organizativas. A medida que el proyecto fue creciendo, los expertos y voluntarios ayudaron a los 32 estudiantes a dimensionar este excepcional espacio público flotante en el lago de Zurich.

Under the guidance of Tom Emerson and project leaders Boris Gusic and Adri-an Heusser the 32 architecture students at ETH Zurich collectively concieved and built the pavilion. The project began with an ideas competition between smaller groups of students, from which the most promising ideas were identified and de-veloped. Organising themselves into smaller teams, they worked at different scales, from considering its position on the lake, right down to 1:1 scale proto-types. As well as the design process, the democratic construction techniques employed informed the design: the pa-vilion is made almost entirely of timber (European spruce), and all joints were designed to be simply screwed together. The students worked over ten months to bring the many design-related, techni-cal and organisational dimensions of the project together to in a multi-layered and ultimately buildable work of archi-tecture. As the project grew, experts and volunteers helped the 32 original stu-dents to realise this exceptional public space floating in lake Zurich.
