Study Abroad: China BEIJING LANGUAGE AND CULTURE UNIVERSITY webster.edu/studyabroad STUDY Webster University’s “Semester in China” program at Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) is aimed at undergraduate students with an interest in Chinese or Asian cultures and is specifically designed to accommodate students at all levels of proficiency in Mandarin. BLCU is located in the Zhongguancun Technology park – a forest of higher education on acres of trees and gardens that create a peaceful and comfortable environment for studying and living. The educational facilities are complete with multi-language laboratories and multimedia classrooms equipped with modern technology. Students will take 15 credit hours during the fall semester, including a required “Chinese Language and Culture” course designed to introduce students to Chinese culture and a course in Mandarin. Courses utilize Beijing as a living classroom, and weave excursions, independent projects, lectures and group work together into a comprehensive experiential learning environment. Students with advanced Mandarin proficiency may also choose from the regular course offerings at BLCU. Additionally, students may choose to take only Mandarin courses for the duration of their study. LIVE Students will be placed in the Beijing Language and Culture University Guesthouse which is centrally located on campus and just a few minutes from the Beijing Metro. The BLCU Guesthouse offers single or double rooms and amenities include laundry facilities, shared kitchens and Internet access in all rooms. Just outside the university gate, students will find many inexpensive restaurants and retail shops. DISCOVER BLCU merges learning Chinese and cultural experiences together by offering Chinese tea tastings, calligraphy, painting and paper cutting lessons, Tai Chi and other cultural events. The school also organizes study tours to various provinces and cities so that students can get out of the classroom and interact with Chinese society in order to understand the history, culture and customs of each place and personally experience the development of modern China.
