WHY THEWHY THESWEDISH PROGRAM?
SWEDISH PROGRAM?
“I had an unbelievable experience with The Swedish Program. I loved living in Stockholm. It is such a comfortable
place to live in. It is an experience I won’t soon forget.”—James Hunter, Hamilton College
The Swedish Program is sponsored by a
consortium of American colleges and
universities. We are affiliated with the
Stockholm School of Economics, one of the
most prestigious universities in Europe. The
Swedish Program offers a full range of liberal
arts courses. As a small program within an international university, we bring you the best of both worlds. For example, our
students take small classes—in English—
and get to know their professors and other
students. At the same time, they have the
benefits of having access to SSE facilities,
events, student clubs, and social activities.
The Swedish Program is committed to
challenging its students intellectually and
culturally. The challenge of intercultural
education is to learn about the institutions
and people of a different culture as you gain
a better understanding of yourself and your
own country. The distinctive features of the
Program—our curricular breadth across
the liberal arts, high academic standards,
commitment to cultural integration, our
university setting, and small size—effectively
promote this multifaceted learning experience.

Academic and Cultural Integration:
One of the challenges of study abroad is integrating yourself within
your new host country. This is not an easy task, especially in a
four-month academic semester. However, The Swedish Program
provides a number of effective pathways which create opportunities
for you to meet and get to know Swedes:
n Direct enrollment courses at SSE
n Access to all SASSE (The SSE Student Association) activities
n Host and Contact families
n Buddy Program in cooperation with SASSE
n Internships within organizations.
ORGANIZATIONAL PATHWAYS

Our small size enables us to arrange
study visits, tours at museums, the city hall,
the opera house, and other organizations.
Program students, like all university students
in Stockholm, even have the chance to enter
a student lottery to win a spot at the Nobel
Prize banquet—the lavish meal that follows
the annual ceremony.
Our MissionThe Swedish Program poses a compelling
intellectual and cultural challenge: to develop
an understanding of how Sweden addresses
political, economic, social, and artistic
issues relevant to all advanced societies. This
challenge reflects Sweden’s impressive history
of innovative responses to issues such as
financial downturns, environmental protection,
immigration, health-care, education, and
gender equality.
These topics are likewise studied in an
interdisciplinary and critical tradition. Our
objective is to promote a comprehensive view
highlighting the country’s achievements as well
as its contemporary problems. Students and
scholars come from all over the world to study
Sweden. The country’s appeal extends beyond
its social and political institutions to its rich
traditions in the arts, humanities, and science.
Our mission is to teach the values of
global citizenship, effectively preparing
students to address the political, economic,
social, technological, and artistic issues of the
21st century. Discovering different ways of
thinking and living constitutes an educational
and cultural adventure. Join us for this unique
intellectual and personal challenge.

Your Competitive Advantage: Our Integration at the Stockholm School of EconomicsThe economic reality for today’s college students
is that finding the right job is difficult. Your
educational choices are crucial to your success
in finding fulfilling and financially rewarding
employment after graduation. This is one of the
reasons you tried so hard to get into the best
college or university. We want you to recognize
that where you decide to study abroad can
also have a positive effect on your chances for
further graduate study or in landing a great job.
How? You should clearly choose a study
abroad program that fits your academic needs,
intellectual curiosity, and cultural interests.
The value of study abroad is that you have the
opportunity to learn about cultural differences,
as you gain a better understanding of
yourself and your own country. By choosing
a study abroad program with international
prestige, you can accomplish all of this, while
simultaneously boosting your chances of
success after graduation.
The Swedish Program’s affiliation with the
Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), one of
Europe’s most highly recognized universities,
will make you stand out when you become a
candidate for graduate studies or when you
begin your job search. We have alumni who
have reported back to us, that at their first job
interview, one of the first questions was “what
was it like to study at SSE.” The most well-
known multi-national corporations, investment
and consulting firms, as well as non-profit
organizations and foundations, come to SSE
every semester to recruit students.
So we invite you to challenge yourself
and choose The Swedish Program. Our
commitment to high academic standards
and academic and cultural integration at the
Stockholm School of Economics, will give you
an invaluable competitive advantage as you
move forward in your education and career.
Be Among Swedish Students! The Stockholm School of Economics (SSE)
is a relatively small and selective institution
enrolling approximately 2,000 students
in various undergraduate and graduate
programs. SSE’s location is convenient
and popular with students. It is located in
the middle of Stockholm, close to cafés,
restaurants, museums, concert halls, and
all forms of public transportation.
our students have access to all the activities, clubs, sports teams, and events organized by the Student Association (SASSE) at the Stockholm School of Economics. SASSE is considered one of
the most active student associations in all
of Europe. We also have a “Buddy Program”
organized through SASSE which gives our
students the opportunity to meet SSE students
very soon after arrival.
In addition, SSE students can enroll in a
select number of Swedish Program courses,
and Program students can enroll directly in
a select number of SSE courses, giving you
the opportunity to share the classroom with
Swedish and other international students.
“I fell in love with Stockholm and can’t imagine having spent the semester in any other city.
It is a very unique and remarkable country, and I will never forget my
experiences there.”— Alexandra Goldman, Wesleyan University

“Stockholm is a great option for students looking to study in a less-typical destination.
My semester in Sweden was by far one of the most educationally enriching experiences of my life.”

EXPLORINGEXPLORINGSTOCKHOLMSTOCKHOLM
The capital city of Stockholm is unique:
located on 14 islands, beautiful,
international, cosmopolitan, and home
to some of the best museums, cultural
institutions, restaurants, and night spots in
the world. Both sophisticated and stylish,
Stockholm attracts visitors from all over
the world to sample its civility, hospitality,
diversified cuisine, as well as witness the
quality of everyday life in a 21st century city.
From the charm of the cobblestoned streets
of the “old town” to the more modern facets
of the city, Stockholm manages to temper the
pulse of a large urban city with the charm of a
smaller community with easy excursions into
nature. A ten-minute walk through downtown
Stockholm can take you from a crowded café
to the shoreline of the Baltic Sea.
Stockholm lights up at night as cars whiz around Sergels Torg (“Sergel’s Square”), Stockholm’s most central public square. It is named after 18th century sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel whose workshop was once located north of the
square. The Brunkeberg Tunnel (below) is a 231 meter long passageway
for pedestrians that was inaugurated in 1886
by King Oscar II.

“Getting to call Stockholm home for four months was a once in a lifetime experience that I would
recommend to anyone. From the people to the fashion to the architecture, it’s the coolest place I could
ever have studied abroad in.”—Amy Beihl, Colgate University

“I couldn’t say a bad word about it if I tried. I’m totally enamored with Stockholm—I plan to live there one day—and can credit this to my experience
with The Swedish Program.”—Robert Levine, University of Pennsylvania
S tockholm, home to just over one million
people, is not only an exciting place to live,
but also a relatively safe and clean city. Crime
rates are among the lowest in the world while the
standard of living is among the highest. Public
transportation is efficient, safe, and inexpensive.
The weather is not as cold as most imagine.
Stockholm has a coastal climate and the winter
weather is less extreme than in Boston.
Discover for yourself why our students
refer to Stockholm as the “hidden gem
of Europe.”
Gamla Stan, or Old Town, is a section of Stockholm which dates back 700 years. Filled with stately architecture and cobblestone streets, Gamla Stan brings Stockholm’s past to life for visitors. The Swedish Parliament (right) is located on one of Stockholm’s many canals.

The Swedish Program’s curriculum
is distinguished by its comparative—
European—perspective and commitment
to an innovative pedagogical style. Students
can select courses which provide opportunities
for active participation through small group
discussions, tutorials, creative writing
assignments, and study visits.

the best decision to choose to study abroad with The Swedish Program. I was given the tools I needed to create opportunities for myself and fully exploit my experience. If I can sum up my
experience in one word, it would be: transformational. The classes
were some of the most interesting I have ever taken; but the most
important knowledge I gained was learned by engaging with the local
environment and its people.” —Emma Chow, Bowdoin College

HOUSING STUDENTSTUDENTLIFELIFES tudents have the option of living in fully
furnished apartments, located throughout the
city of Stockholm, or with carefully selected
host families. Our apartments may be located
no longer than one hour (under normal weather
conditions) by public transportation to SSE.
However, most of our students living in apartments
have a commute between 25 and 40 minutes.
Our host families may live no longer than
70 minutes (under normal weather conditions)
by public transportation to SSE. However, most
of our students living with host families have
a commute between 40 and 50 minutes. We
limit host family placements to 8 students per
semester. Consequently, students who prefer
a host family should apply early, as we have a
rolling admissions process. Moreover, students
who elect to live with a host family are
required to have a brief interview, via Skype,
with our Program Coordinator in Stockholm
before a family placement is guaranteed.
Host Families Our criterion for selecting host families is
simple but demanding: the family must be
motivated solely by their interest in a rewarding
inter-cultural experience. our students are treated as family members, not as boarders. All students who elect to live with
Swedish families have their own bedroom.
Apartments/Contact FamiliesStudents may opt to live in apartments. We
typically place our students in one bedroom
apartments with one American roommate, or
two bedroom apartments with two roommates.
Please note that the arrangement in our
apartments may change from year to year.
Living in our apartments is an opportunity for a total cultural immersion experience. In Stockholm, there is very
limited “student housing.” Most Swedish
students live like you will be living—in private
apartments spread around the city. Your
everyday experience, from doing laundry
in the apartment building to grocery
shopping, will allow you to interact with
Swedes and others, in your building and
neighborhood.
Students living in our apartments
have the option of being assigned
“contact families” with whom they
may meet throughout the semester or
academic year. Upon acceptance to
The Swedish Program, we will provide
more detailed housing information
to help you decide which option is
best for you.
The Stockholm School of
Economics provides
many opportunities
to meet Swedes and
other international
students through
an array of social
activities. But
students can also
turn to the bustling
and vibrant city
of Stockholm for
their social life, as
the campus is located in the middle of the city.
Our students have full access to all the clubs,
events, and activities sponsored by SSE’s student
association (SASSE), such as film, photography,
a variety of sports, graphic design, journalism,
and music—to name a few! For a full list of all the
activities, see www.swedishprogram.org.
Stockholm has more restaurants, museums,
and parks—per capita—than any city in the
world. There is simply a lot to do! From films and
theater in English, sporting events (world class
hockey and soccer) to a great music scene, fun
pubs and dance clubs, student life is never boring.
Great skiing is only about four hours away by
train. There is always something special going
on in Stockholm as well—film festivals, dance
exhibitions, food fairs, running races—there is
something for everyone!

We know that our students want to meet
Swedes. The best way to meet the locals is
to join something—in sports, music, politics,
or in almost any activity in which you have an
interest. Our Program Coordinator is committed
to helping our students find such social and
cultural opportunities.
Independent TravelApart from our
planned travel during
orientation and our
optional study trips to
the island of Gotland
and the Northern Lights,
students have two weeks off each semester for independent travel. We recognize that students want to travel while
studying abroad so we give them plenty of
opportunity to do so. Our students are able
to travel easily throughout Europe during
their vacations and appreciate the opportunity
to choose for themselves where they want to go! And there are easy and direct
flights from Stockholm to some of Europe’s
great cities:
berlin: 1 hour and 30 minutes;
London: 2 hours and 15 minutes;
Paris: 2 hours and 30 minutes;
barcelona: 3 hours and 15 minutes.
Being located on 14 islands means Stockholm is home to countless waterfront cafes and restaurants.

“The Swedish Program is an opportunity for students to participate in one of Europe’s most prestigious academic institutions while
experiencing the rich culture in the beauty of Stockholm. It sounds too good to be true, but my fantasy semester abroad has undeniably
shaped my growth as a student and as a citizen of the world.”—Gretchen Gerlach, Brown University
