Student life in PortsmouthWe know you want to make the most of your time abroad, and in Portsmouth you can do just that. There are endless opportunities to make new friends and have fun, whatever your interests.

One World Week One World Week is the chance for people at the University to celebrate their diversity and discover more about each other. Various events take place to inspire, inform, entertain and spark debate, with celebrations growing bigger every year. On top of that, everyone in the University – both staff and students – are invited to join in.

Mix and Match This social networking scheme is run by the International Office and helps students to meet and talk about anything from daily life in the UK to course lectures. Monthly cafes are offered where students are invited to come along for a drink and make friends from all over the world.

Travel The International Office organises coach trips throughout the year to a wide range of famous destinations such as Stonehenge, Bath, Windsor Castle, Oxford and Brighton. This is a great way to get to know the country and meet other students from all around the world.

If you are interested in travelling further afield independently during your stay, Portsmouth’s ideal location and fantastic transport links will enable you to explore not just the United Kingdom, but also many destinations across Europe.

Eating out and nightlife Portsmouth is home to many restaurants and cafes, providing a wide selection of worldwide cuisines to suit every taste and budget.

Sport Our location on Britain’s south coast and mild climate provides an ideal position to enjoy all kinds of outdoor and water sports. ComputingYou will have access to excellent computer facilities and places to study between lectures, as well as wireless internet in all campus buildings. We provide IT support 24 hours a day, computer suites with specialised software and equipment and service delivery advisers on hand to assist with problems. In addition, there are four open access areas with PCs and Macs, printing facilities, laptops and group working spaces.

Support servicesPersonal tutor system All students are assigned a personal tutor once they have enrolled on their course. Students will find the tutor an invaluable resource and receive expert advice in matters of an academic nature either in person, by telephone or by email.

Study Abroad TeamThe Study Abroad Team is based in the International Office and is dedicated to answering any preliminary enquiries, helping you through the application process, welcoming you during Orientation Week, and to providing support and information for non-academic matters throughout your stay in Portsmouth. Living in PortsmouthWe have a wide range of modern and well-equipped halls of residence all offering the opportunity to meet and live amongst students from different courses, cultures and backgrounds. All rooms are fully furnished, with study facilities and high speed wireless internet.

Once you have been accepted on to the Study Abroad Programme, you are eligible to apply for accommodation in our halls of residence. The application must be sent to the Student Housing Office, and if you are allocated a place, you must provide an advance rent payment of £200/€240, usually by the beginning of August (September entry) or the beginning of December (January entry).

Langstone Student Village (room only or room and board option) – situated on the edge of Langstone Harbour, the Student Village comprises three halls of residence and is home to the University sports fields. These halls offer the opportunity of escaping city life, with its own large communal area, restaurant and computer suite as well as onsite laundry facilities. There are additional shops and amenities close by and a free regular University bus service taking just 20 minutes to link you to the University buildings and city centre just 2.5 miles/4 kilometres away.

Rees and Burrell (room and board – two meals a day) – situated close to the beach and all of Southsea’s leisure activities. Rees Hall overlooks Southsea Common and the Solent, with Burrell House located just behind. The University buildings and city centre are all within ten minutes’ walking distance.

Guildhall Halls (room only) – located in the heart of the city’s vibrant and bustling entertainment area and conveniently situated for the main shopping centres. Guildhall Halls are within walking distance of all main University buildings including the University Library, Students’ Union and University gym.

Practical informationOrientation programme The University provides an orientation programme for students arriving from overseas in the week before term starts to help you settle into your new environment. You will receive general advice about living and studying in Portsmouth as the programme includes academic events, city tours and social events.

Airport pick-up The University offers an airport pick-up service for new students to provide a worry-free option for the last part of their journey to Portsmouth. Information on how to book a place is given on the international pages of the website www.port.ac.uk/international.

Visas (non-EU nationals) You will need a visa to study in the UK. If you will be studying in Portsmouth for one term only, you can apply for a Student Visitor Visa (£76/€91). Under this type of visa you are entitled to stay a maximum of six months, but you are not entitled to extend into full-time study, change course, or take any paid or unpaid employment during the study period.

Alternatively you may apply for a Tier 4 (General) Student visa (£255/€305). This visa entitles you to work for up to 20 hours per week during term time. If you are studying in the UK for one year you will require a Tier 4 (General) Student visa and must obtain it before you travel.

You can apply for a Tier 4 (General) Student visa once you have received your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the University. You may apply for your visa online at: www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk/Welcome.htm.

Cost of living Portsmouth enjoys a low cost of living compared with many other cities in the south east of England. The amount of money you spend will depend on your individual lifestyle, although as a guide you will need approximately £2,000–£2,500/€2,400– €3,000 for the autumn term (September to December), and £6,000–£7,000/€7,200– €8,400 for the full academic year. This should cover accommodation, food, local travelling expenses, books, stationery and leisure activities.

Healthcare Students must register with a doctor’s surgery on arrival in the UK in order to be able to receive treatment for the majority of medical conditions. Local hospitals are easily accessible in the unlikely event of an emergency.

Study Abroad Programme Entry requirementsYou can choose to study at Portsmouth for a half (one term) or full academic year. You will study in classes alongside full-time British and international students. Learning is undertaken through lectures as well as smaller seminar and tutorial classes, giving you an opportunity to work closely with, and get to know, other students on your course.

Courses are weighted with either 10 credits (5 ECTS) or 20 credits (10 ECTS), so the number of classes you take will vary depending on your choices. You can expect to study in the classroom for 12–15 hours per week, with another 12–15 hours of independent study.

On completion of your study period you may request an academic transcript, which can be sent directly to you or your university.
