To study the rock mechanical behaviors and damage process mechanism of granite samples under triaxial stress, conventional triaxial compression tests were carried out on an RMT-150B rock mechanics testing machine and acoustic emission detector. The test results show that the strength of the granite sample has a good linear relationship with the conning pressure, the cohesion force c of the granite samples is 29.37 MPa, and the internal friction angle is 54.23 ° by calculation based on the Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion. The larger the initial conning pressure of the rock sample is, the larger the crack initiation stress (σ ci ) and dilatancy stress (σ cd ) of the granite specimen are, the larger the energy values at the crack initiation point and dilatancy point are, and the larger the peak energy storage and energy release rate at the failure are. In the case of a small initial conning pressure, the AE ringdowning counts and the cumulative AE ringing counts increase to their maximum instantaneously at the peak stress point, and the damage of the sample develops rapidly. While the initial conning pressure is high, the AE ringing counts and the cumulative AE ringing counts of the granite specimens increase evenly, and the deformation damage of the granite specimens is slow. Before the crack initiation point, AE signals are mainly low-energy and low-frequency friction-type AE events, while after the dilatation point, AE signals of samples are mainly high-frequency and high-energy fracture-type AE events. The failure mode of granite samples judged by acoustic emission parameters according to the distribution of characteristic values of AE parameters RA and AF is consistent with the reality. The AE b value of the granite sample is large when the conning pressure is low, and there will be a sudden drop, the decrease time is late, and the decrease rate is large. Under the same stress level, the larger the conning pressure is, the larger the damage variable D is. 1. Introduction The stress concentration of surrounding rock in the high- stress area caused the energy stored in the rock mass to be released suddenly and violently in the process of underground engineering construction, and eventually, the surrounding rock will fracture loosening, spalling, ejecting and even burst- ing the rock, and other geological disasters will occur [13]. Such geological hazards have seriously threatened the safety, progress, and cost of underground engineering construction [4, 5]. Meanwhile, the study of the mechanical behavior and damage mechanism of deep buried hard rock under triaxial stress is of great signicance for revealing underground engi- neering geological hazards, engineering stability control, and reasonable formulation of prevention and control measures [6, 7]. A large number of papers have studied in-depth and sys- tematically researched on the mechanical properties and energy evolution characteristics of rock materials in triaxial compression. Martin and Chandler [8] obtained a complete stress-strain curve and failure mode of the hard rock by a large number of brittle rock load tests using a rigid testing machine. Zong et al. To study the rock mechanical behaviors and damage process mechanism of granite samples under triaxial stress, conventionaltriaxial compression tests were carried out on an RMT-150B rock mechanics testing machine and acoustic emission detector.The test results show that the strength of the granite sample has a good linear relationship with the confining pressure, thecohesion force c of the granite samples is 29.37MPa, and the internal friction angle is 54.23° by calculation based on theMohr-Coulomb strength criterion. 1. Introduction

The stress concentration of surrounding rock in the high-stress area caused the energy stored in the rock mass to bereleased suddenly and violently in the process of undergroundengineering construction, and eventually, the surroundingrock will fracture loosening, spalling, ejecting and even burst-ing the rock, and other geological disasters will occur [1–3].Such geological hazards have seriously threatened the safety,progress, and cost of underground engineering construction[4, 5]. Meanwhile, the study of the mechanical behavior anddamage mechanism of deep buried hard rock under triaxialstress is of great significance for revealing underground engi-

neering geological hazards, engineering stability control, andreasonable formulation of prevention and control measures[6, 7].

A large number of papers have studied in-depth and sys-tematically researched on the mechanical properties andenergy evolution characteristics of rock materials in triaxialcompression. Martin and Chandler [8] obtained a completestress-strain curve and failure mode of the hard rock by alarge number of brittle rock load tests using a rigid testingmachine. Zong et al. [9] obtained the law that peak strength,elastic modulus, and deformation modulus increase linearlywith confining pressure by analyzing the stress-straincharacteristics and strength deformation characteristics of

sandstone. The essence of failure of loaded rock is energyaccumulation and release, so it is meaningful to study thelaw of energy evolution under different mechanical environ-ments to reveal the failure mechanism of rock under load[10–12]. Based on this, Xie et al. [13, 14] analyzed the energyevolution mechanism and the influence of energy on rockstrength in the failure process of rock under differentmechanical states, the internal relationship between rockenergy dissipation and release, and the rock strength, andthe process of failure was established. Tian and Yu [15] car-ried out triaxial compression tests on limestone samples andrevealed the energy conversion methods of the rock in eachstage of the compression process. Zhang and Gao [16] ana-lyzed the relationship between granite energy characteristicsand stress, strain, and confining pressure through triaxialcompression tests. The above research result has greatlypromoted the development of the research on the energyevolution law in the process of loading failure of hard rock,but the above research has not linked the energy evolutionwith the fracture damage process of rock.

Acoustic emission monitoring technology is of great sig-nificance to study crack propagation and internal damagefracture behavior of brittle materials under complex stresses[17–19]. Eberhardt et al. [20] researched the failure processof granite through acoustic emission monitoring and foundthat the beginning of significant AE activity corresponds tothe initiation of new cracks. Ganne et al. [21] proposed thefour stages of acoustic emission energy accumulation in therock fracture process through the AE test technology corre-sponding to the occurrence of microcracks, propagationaccumulation, aggregation, and final failure; the material willshow obvious characteristics of accelerated energy releasebefore failure. Cai et al. [22] proposed that the frequencyof acoustic emission in the spectrogram is related to the sizeof the fracture. A new method which is called the cumulativeAE hit method which has been developed for objectivedetermination of the crack stress was forwarded by Zhaoet al. [23]. Zhang et al. [24] studied the variation law ofacoustic emission b value of coal rock and showed that theb value would drop rapidly when the rock was failing. Tangand Xu [25], Eberhardt et al. [26], and Liu et al. [27] used AEevents and ringing to characterize the damage of rock andstudied the damage evolution law of rock. As can be seenfrom the above, acoustic emission technology plays animportant role in the failure and instability mechanism ofrock [28–30]. However, the research is mainly focused onuniaxial compression, and actual rock mass is more in thestate of triaxial stress than uniaxial stress. Therefore,researches on acoustic emission characteristics of hard rockunder different confining pressures are not in-depth andsystematic enough.

To establish the relationship between AE parameters andthe failure mechanism of hard rock, and further study thedamage evolution law of hard rock under triaxial stress, inthis paper, conventional triaxial compression tests underdifferent confining pressures (5MPa, 10MPa, 15MPa, and20MPa) for granite specimen were carried out. The mechan-ical properties and energy evolution mechanism of granitespecimens under different confining pressures were studied.

The crack initiation stress (σci) and dilatancy stress (σcd) ofhard rock were determined based on the law of linear energydissipation. According to the results of AE monitoring, thecharacteristics of acoustic damage in the process of hardrock deformation and fracture under different initial confin-ing pressures were studied. The types of granite specimencrack propagation under different loading times were clari-fied by judging the types of acoustic emission signals. Theevolution law of the acoustic emission b value under differ-ent confining pressures was studied. The damage model Dof granite was established in this paper. The research resultsof this paper are meaningful to the correct understanding ofthe mechanical properties and fracture mechanism of hardrock under triaxial stress and provide a theoretical basis forthe selection of mechanical parameters of rock mass, engi-neering design calculation, and selection of support schemesin deep underground engineering.

2. Experimental Investigations

2.1. Experimental Instrument and Specimen. Conventionaltriaxial compression in this paper was carried out by theRMT-150B rock mechanics testing machine (as shown inFigure 1(a)). The instrument can apply a maximum confin-ing pressure of 50MPa, and the maximum axial stress is1000 kN. In this study, the AE events of granite is monitoredby DS-5 8-channel in the process of sample loading, as showin Figure 1(b). Meanwhile, in order to avoid attenuation ofacoustic signal, butter was used as a coupling agent betweenthe sensor and the sample, as shown in Figure 1(c), and aproper intensifying force was used to ensure good contactbetween the sensor and the granite sample. The samplingfrequency was 3MHz, the threshold value was set as 50,the amplification factor was set as 40 dB, and the frequencyof acoustic emission sensor RS-2A was set as 150 kHz duringthe acquisition of acoustic emission signals.

The rock mass is complete relatively, without obviousdefects, and the surface of the rock looks smooth. The orig-inal rock was processed into a cylinder with a diameter of50mm and a height of 100mm, as shown in Figure 1(d).The machining accuracy of the granite samples was strictlyin accordance with the standard of ISRM. The density ofthe granite is 2.63 g/cm3 [31]. XRD analysis is widely usedto testing the mineral compositions of the rock mass [32].Therefore, in this study, XRD tests of granite powder werecarried out by the Bruker X-ray diffractometer, as shownin Figure 2. Quartz and albite are hard and chemically stable;therefore, the higher the content, the greater the strength ofthe rock. The content of quartz and albite in the granite sam-ple accounted for 71%, of which albite is 66% and quartz is5%. In the sample, laumonite accounted for 25% andlaumontite accounted for 4%.

2.2. Unloading Scheme. The rock sample was wrapped witha latex sleeve before loading; then, rigid cushion blocks witha diameter of 50mm and a height of 25mm were, respec-tively, placed on the upper and lower ends of the graniterock sample; finally, the rock sample was put into the pres-sure cylinder for loading. Rock samples were loaded to

predetermined confining pressures under hydrostatic pres-sure, four groups of initial confining pressures (5MPa,10MPa, 15MPa, and 20MPa) were set in this paper, theloading rate of axial stress is 1.00 kN/s, and the loading rateof confining pressure is 0.500MPa/s when applied to hydro-static pressure. And then, axial compression was applied at aconstant displacement load rate (0.005mm/s) until rocksamples were destroyed.

3. Experimental Analysis of MechanicalProperties of Granite

3.1. The Stress-Strain Curves of Granite. The complete stress-strain curves of granite samples under different initial con-fining pressures are shown in Figure 3.

It can be seen from Figure 3 that the stress-strain curvesof the granite samples under different initial confining

pressures all experienced the compaction stage (OA), linearelastic deformation stage (AB), plastic deformation stage(BC), and postpeak failure stage (CD). In the compactionstage (OA), the original holes and fissures inside the rocksample were compacted, and the stress-strain curves showobvious concaveness. When the sample enters the linearelastic stage (AB), in Figure 3, the elastic modulus (E1) ofthe granite sample is 50.70GPa, and the elastic modulus(E4) of granite is 69.54GPa, which indicates that the granitesample exhibits significant compression hardening. In theplastic deformation stage (BC), the stress-strain curve ofsamples becomes concave upward; the greater the confiningpressure, the more obvious the prepeak yielding phenome-non and plastic deformation of the sample, and the speci-men is gradually transformed from brittle to ductile. Withthe further application of the axial stress, the samples reachtheir peak point (C), and the peak stress and peak strain ofthe granite specimen both increase with the increase of theconfining pressure.

3.2. The Strength Characteristics of Granite. Rock strengththeory is aimed at expressing the yield and failure laws ofrocks under complex stress conditions, which has alwaysbeen a significant issue in the field of geotechnical engineer-ing. And the Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion is the mostauthoritative strength theory [33] whose expression isshown in the following formula:

In the formula, ξ is a constant and σc is the uniaxialcompressive strength (MPa). According to formula (1), thefitting results are shown in Figure 4.

It can be seen from Figure 4 that the correlation coeffi-cient R2 of the triaxial compression test results fitted is0.999, which has a good linear relationship. The parametersξ and σc in equation (1) can both be expressed in terms of

the strength parameters of the specimen, the cohesion (φ),and the angle of internal friction (c), whose expressions areshown in equations (2) and (3) as follows:

where φ is internal friction of the rock sample (°) and c isthe cohesion force of the rock sample (MPa). Based on thefitting results in Figure 4 and equations (2) and (3), thecohesive force c of the granite specimen was calculated tobe 29.37MPa and the angle of internal friction φ was 54.23°.

3.3. Failure Characteristics of Granite under DifferentConfining Pressures. The granite presents a microdrumshape, resulting in an obvious expansion along the trans-verse direction during the fracture process of conventionaltriaxial loading. The crack sound of the granite specimen isheard clearly when it fails, which reflects the characteristicsof hard rock failure. The photos of fracture characteristicsof granite samples are shown in Figure 5.

It can be seen from Figure 5 that near the end of thesample, there are partially fractured surfaces on both sidesof the main fracture surface; the end of the rock sample ismore severely broken which is caused by the friction effectbetween the indenter of the testing machine and the end ofthe rock sample. The main forms of damage of granite spec-imens in triaxial compression are tensile and shear damage.As shown in Figure 5(a), two axial tensile failure surfacesappear in the rock sample, which shows that the damageof the specimen is compression-induced tensile cracking,and the extension of the tensile crack within the sampleplays a dominant role in the damage of the granite speci-mens when the initial confining pressure is lower. Whenthe initial confining pressure ranges from 10 to 20MPa,

the failure of the rock sample ends with the formation of amacroscopic shear surface. As shown in Figure 4(b), thegranite specimen fractured with a large number of splittingcracks in the axial direction; as shown in Figure 4(c), therock sample shows typical Y-type conjugate shear failure;and as shown in Figure 4(d), the rock fracture pattern tendsto be simplified, and the complex fracture pattern domi-nated by a tensile fracture gradually transforms into a singleshear fracture pattern. Because the mineral particles insidethe rock sample are bonded to each other and fit tightlyunder high pressure, which results in an increase in thecohesion of the granite sample, it is not prone to tensile frac-ture, and eventually, shear failure occurs. As show inFigure 4(d), the fracture angle of rock sample is 73°, whichis close to the theoretical fracture angle of 72.3° predictedby the Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion (θ = 45° + φ/2).

4. Energy Evolution of Granite under DifferentConfining Pressures

4.1. Principle of Energy Analysis. Rock loading failure is aprocess accompanied with energy absorption, storage, anddissipation [34, 35]. Assuming that the thermal energy gen-erated by the external temperature change is not considered,the work done by the external force on the rock system ispartly stored as elastic strain energy, and others are dissi-pated in the form of dissipation energy [36, 37] (as showin formula (4) and Figure 6). The rock will be destroyedwhen the elastic strain energy reaches its energy storagelimit, a part of the stored elastic strain energy is convertedinto surface energy for the generation of new cracks, andthe excess energy is used for rock kinetic energy, soundenergy, thermal energy, and various kinds of radiation tobe release to the outside world in other forms [14, 35].

replaced by the elastic modulus E0 in the calculation [14].

4.2. Energy Evolution Process under Different ConfiningPressures. According to formulas (5), (6), and (7), the evolu-tion laws of total energy U , elastic strain energy Ue, and dis-sipated energy Ud of granite specimen during loading anddamage under conventional triaxial stress path are obtainedby using Origin software, as shown in Figure 7. Based on theconventional triaxial stress-strain characteristics of the sam-ple, the stress-strain curve can be divided into the initialcompression stage (OA), elastic deformation stage (AB), sta-ble fracture growth stage (BC), unstable fracture growthstage (CD), and failure stage (DE).

(1) Initial compression stage (OA): the energy absorbedby the rock sample is basically transformed into thedissipated energy Ud that causes the microcracksinside the rock to close and frictionally slip, at whichpoint there is essentially no stored energy within thesample.

(2) Elastic deformation stage (AB): the original cracks ofthe sample were compacted; there is no energy dissi-pation phenomenon in the rock sample. The elasticstrain energy stored increases with the occurrenceof elastic deformation, and the increase in elasticstrain energy is constant. In this stage, the higherthe confining pressure is, the higher the elastic strainenergy storage rate is.

(3) Stable fracture growth stage (BC): at this stage, theenergy is still continuously inputted to the specimen,and the input energy is mainly stored in the form ofreleasable strain energy. There is a large number ofmicrocracks in the sample initiation and develop-ment, but the initiation speed of microcracks in thesample is stable at this time, so the internal dissipa-tion energy of the sample increases linearly at thisstage. The crack initiation stress and dilation stressof the sample can be determined by the law of linearenergy dissipation (as show in Figure 7). Accordingto Figures 7(a) and 7(b), the crack initiation stressand dilatancy stress of granite samples increase withthe increase of confining pressure.

(4) Unstable fracture growth stage (CD): the micro-cracks inside the rock sample begin to accelerateexpansion and penetrate. The growth rate of elasticenergy decreases sharply, and the growth rate ofdissipated energy increases gradually. At the endof the unstable fracture growth stage, the elasticstrain energy reaches the energy storage limit ofthe specimen, and the dissipation energy increasessignificantly.

(5) Failure stage (DE): the sample can still absorb energyfrom the outside after the axial stress reaches its peakstress. However, at this time, the elastic straindecreased sharply, and the dissipated energy increasesrapidly due to plastic deformation, macroscopic crackpenetration, and slippage dislocation of macroscopiccracks which dissipate a large amount of energy.Finally, the strength of the whole rock structure is lost,and the rock is destroyed. At this stage, the greater the

confining pressure is, the faster the energy release rateof the granite sample is. In Figure 7(a), the energyrelease rate of the granite sample is 377.69MJ/m3,and in Figure 7(d), the energy release rate of the gran-ite sample is 904.92MJ/m3.

4.3. Analysis of Energy at Characteristic Points. The thresh-old stress of the granite sample was determined accordingto the law of linear energy dissipation in Section 3.2, andthe relationship between the confining pressure of the sam-ple and the total energy, elastic strain energy, and dissipatedenergy was obtained at the threshold stress and peak stresspoint, as shown in Figure 8.

According to Figure 8, each energy of the specimenunder different times is highly correlated with the confiningpressure. (1) At the crack initiation point, the confiningpressure has a greater impact on the total energy U and elas-tic strain energy Ue of the granite specimen. The energy

absorbed and stored by the sample increases linearly, and itsgrowth rate is 0.011 (MJ/m3)/MPa, while the change trend ofabsorbed and stored energy with confining pressure is steep,which is only 0.023 (MJ/m3)/MPa when the confining pres-sure is greater than 15MPa. The change of dissipated energyat the crack initiation point is not significant, and the value ofdissipated energy is both 0.039MJ/m3. (2) At the expansionpoint, when the confining pressure is less than 10MPa, thechange trend of total energy and elastic strain energy of granitesample is slow, and the energy growth rate is0.002 (MJ/m3)/MPa and 0.005 (MJ/m3)/MPa, respectively.However, the growth rates of total energy and elastic strainenergy are 0.027 (MJ/m3)/MPa and 0.022 (MJ/m3)/MPa,respectively, when the confining pressure is larger. At this time,

the change of dissipated energy is still not significant; the dissi-pated energy is both 0.039MJ/m3. (3) At the peak point, theoverall linear law of the total energy, elastic strain energy, andconfining pressure of the granite sample is more significant;when the confining pressure is larger than 15MPa, the dissi-pated energy of the sample increases significantly. As shownin Figures 8(b) and 8(c), the greater the confining pressureis, the more energy is dissipated by the granite sample in theprocess of damage and failure, and the damage deformationof the sample is sufficient relatively. A large amount of energywas absorbed in the rock specimen when the confining pres-sure is high. At this time, the limit energy storage capacityof the rock sample is reduced. Therefore, the sample willrelease a large amount of energy and have a large energy

release rate when it is broken. This phenomenon has beenconfirmed in dynamic disasters such as rock bursts duringthe construction of a high geostress environment of under-ground engineering.

5. Damage Analysis of Hard Rock withAE Parameters

Acoustic emission of rock is an elastic wave released by thepropagation of original cracks and defects in rock materialsand the formation, initiation, evolution, expansion, and frac-ture of new microcracks during the process of loading [38,39]. The acoustic emission of rock contains the evolutioninformation of the failure process inside the rock, and therock will show different acoustic emission signals and crackpropagation characteristics under different stress levels. Theanalysis of the relationship between the acoustic emissionsignals and the characteristics of crack propagation in theprocess of rock fracture is helpful to the study of the internalfracture mechanism of rock under the three-direction stress

path, which is of great significance to the further predictionand prevention of rock mass disasters [40, 41].

5.1. Qualitative Damage Analysis of Hard Rock withAE Parameters

5.1.1. The AE Ring Count Characteristics of Granite. Acous-tic emission technology is of great significance to the studyof material damage and fracture processes. Ringing countis a parameter that can better reflect the changes in materialdamage and fracture processes among many acoustic emis-sion parameters, because it is proportional to the strainenergy released by dislocation movement, inclusion and sec-ond phase particle peeling, and fracture and crack propaga-tion in the rock material [18, 19]. Figure 9 shows AE ringingcounts and cumulative ringing counts in the deformationand failure process of granite samples.

It can be seen from Figure 9, at the initial loading stage,there were small amounts of AE events in the granite speci-men during the compaction stage due to the original cracks

inside the sample beginning to close and the frictional effectof rough crack surfaces occurring. With continuous loading,the sample enters the elastic deformation stage; at this time,acoustic emission events are still rare, because the stress inthe granite specimen is not enough to product new cracks,and the generation of acoustic emission events is caused bythe dislocation and grain slip between closed microcracksurfaces. When the sample enters the stage of stable micro-crack growth, the cracks in the sample initiate, bifurcate,and develop stably, and the old cracks also enter the stateof stable development. Acoustic emission events in the sam-ple begin to increase, and the cumulative ringing countincreases linearly. With the further application of axial load,internal microcracks of the sample accelerate extension,aggregation, and penetration; the acoustic emission eventof the sample becomes active; and the cumulative ringingcount curve is concave. At the peak stress, AE events arehyperactive, the AE ringing counts reach their maximumvalue, and the cumulative ringing counts increase suddenly.

When the confining pressure is small (see Figure 9(a)),the AE ringing counts are small in the prepeak stage, andthe cumulative ringing count is only 0:46 × 106. The cumu-lative ring count increases sharply from 0:46 × 106 to 6:27× 106 from the peak point to the failure process of the sam-ple. When the confining pressure is large (see Figure 9(d)),the AE activity of the sample is relatively active before it

fractures, and its cumulative ringing count has reached2:24 × 106. In the case of low confining pressure, the granitespecimen undergoes brittle failure when the axial stressreaches it material strength; therefore, the AE ringing countsincrease to its maximum value instantaneously in the failurestage; on the contrary, the axial stress reaches the strength ofthe rock material and plastic deformation occurs. However,the strength of the rock material is greatly enhanced due tothe confining pressure effect. At this time, the specimen stillhas a strong bearing capacity, the internal damage of thesample continues to develop, and the load-bearing capacityof the sample is gradually reduced while the deformationincreases gradually. Finally, the specimen reaches its ulti-mate bearing capacity at the peak stress and ductile failureoccurs; the acoustic emission ringing count grows moreevenly in this process.

5.1.2. Acoustic Emission Types under Different ConfiningPressures and Moments. Acoustic emission ringing countcan qualitatively reflect the degree of the internal damageof the sample during the conventional triaxial loading failureprocess, and the type of acoustic emission signal can bejudged by the frequency and energy of the acoustic emissionsignal, which can further investigate the type of damagewithin the specimen. [42]. The first is the friction-type acoustic emission eventcaused by the closure of original cracks and the frictionbetween material particles, which has low frequency andweak energy. The other is the fracture-type acoustic emis-sion event caused by the expansion of new cracks, and thiskind of acoustic emission has relatively high frequency andenergy. Two types of AE events correspond to friction andfracture mechanisms, respectively. Figure 10 shows the rela-tionship between the peak frequency and the acoustic emis-sion energy of the specimen at the end of the compactionstage (point A), the crack initiation point (point B), the dilat-ancy point (point C), the peak stress point (point D), and thefailure point (point E) under the initial confining pressurewhich is 5MPa and 20MPa.

According to Figure 10, the peak frequency and energyof acoustic emission signals at different times with the sameconfining pressure have great differences. In Figures 10(a1),to 10(d1), with the application of axial load, the energy valueof the acoustic emission signal keeps increasing. The maxi-mum acoustic emission energy at moment A is 28mV·ms,the maximum value of acoustic emission energy is420mV·ms at the moment of C, and the maximum acousticemission energy at moment E is as high as 4610mV·ms,which is 171.79 times higher than that at the moment ofA. At the same time, as the loading-applied AE high-frequency signal points increase, the frequencies of acousticemission signals of the samples are concentrated in the rangeof 8.8~23.4 kHz at the moment A and moment B (seeFigures 10(a) and 10(b)), which are dominated by low-frequency and low-energy friction-type acoustic emissionevents. At moment C, a small number of high-frequency sig-nal points appear in the sample, which indicates that beforethe crack initiation point, AE events are mainly induced bythe crack closure and interparticle friction in the granitesample. At moments D and E (see Figures 10(d) and10(e)), a large number of high-frequency signal pointsappear. At this time, the acoustic emission model graduallytransform from low-frequency and low-energy friction-type AE events to high-frequency and high-energyfracture-type AE events, and the above process is consistentwith the deformation and damage process of the sampleunder triaxial loading. The AE signals of granite samples

gradually evolve to high-frequency and high-energy regionsunder a low confining pressure. When the confining pres-sure is high, in Figures 10(d), the density of high-frequencyand high-energy region points is the largest, while inFigure 10(e), the number of high-frequency and high-energy signal points is significantly reduced, and more inter-mediate frequency signals appear, which indicate that highconfining pressure inhibits the generation of tension cracks.

5.1.3. The Relationship between RA and AF Parameters withFailure Mode. According to the research, the value of RAand average frequency (AF) in acoustic emission parameterscan reflect the failure type of the rock material, where thevalue of RA can be obtained by dividing the rising time bythe amplitude value of acoustic emission, and the averagefrequency AF is obtained by the ratio of ringing count andduration. Generally speaking, the AE signal has a low AFvalue and high RA value when the shear crack is initiatedin the sample; otherwise, if the tensile crack is initiated, theAE event has a high AF value and low RA value [43], asshown in Figure 11.

The RA value and AF value of the granite samples werecalculated, and the scatter distribution diagram is drawn, asshown in Figure 12.

As can be seen from the distribution of points inFigure 12, with the increase of confining pressure, the distri-bution region tends to approach the horizontal axis. InFigure 12(a), the points cover the entire longitudinal axis,which are mainly concentrated in the interval of 10 < AF <80. At this time, the AE signal has a lower RA value and ahigher AF value, which indicates that the tensile crack ofthe sample is developed, when the confining pressure is 0< RA < 40. At this time, the difference between the acousticemission signals AF and RA is small, and the tensile cracksand shear cracks are relatively developed in the sample;when the confining pressure is 15MPa, the points are mainlyconcentrated near the horizontal axis and are dense rela-tively in the interval of (0, 40); the cracks produced by spec-imen failure are mainly shear cracks. In Figure 12(d), thepoints are all over the entire horizontal axis, the maximumvalue of AF decreases from 100 to about 70, and the RAvalue of the acoustic emission signal is much larger thanthe AF value. At this time, the shear crack of the sample isrelatively developed, and the ultimate performance is typicalshear failure. The failure modes of rock samples underdifferent confining pressures determined above are consis-tent with the actual situation.

5.1.4. The Characteristic of AE b Value under DifferentConfining Pressures. Acoustic emission is a phenomenon ofacoustic waves monitored by the release of strain energyduring rock deformation and failure. Therefore, the acousticemission event can be regarded as a kind of microseismicactivity [44, 45]. Gutenberg and Richter [46] proposed thestatistical relationship between earthquake magnitude andfrequency distribution:

where a and b are constants related to seismic activitycharacteristics; N is the number of earthquakes with magni-tude in the range of ΔM, which can be considered as acousticemission events of samples; and M is the magnitude of theearthquake, which can be replaced by the acoustic emissionamplitude (dB) divided by 20; formula (8) can be rewritten as

where AdB (dB) is the amplitude of the acoustic emissionsignal,N is the number of AE events, and a and b are constant.The b value of acoustic emission is a measure of the change ofcrack development, and the overall value and change trend ofthe b value are closely related to the internal crack develop-ment of rock. When the b value of acoustic emission is large,which indicates that the number of small events increases,and the development of internal rock cracks is a gradual andstable propagation. When the value of b is small, it means thatthe proportion of AE small events decreases, while the numberof large events increases, which indicates that the crack inside

the sample develops dramatically, and the rock may be dam-aged. In order to avoid large errors in the calculation, thispaper selects 100 AE signals as a group of data to calculatethe b value of AE by using the least-square method; the varia-tion of the b value of samples during the conventional triaxialloading is shown in Figure 13.

As can be seen from Figure 13, in the early stages ofloading, the b values of the sample under different confiningpressures were low, and the AE amplitude was high and typ-ically around 10–20 dB. Low b values and high amplitudesare due to the original holes and cracks in the rock sampleswhich were compacted. In the elastic deformation stage, theAE amplitudes were low and below 10dB. The b value ofacoustic emission suddenly increases to its maximum value,and it fluctuates slightly near the maximum value. This indi-cates that the number of small AE events is increasing, theproportion of large and small events changes little at thisstage, the development of internal cracks in the rock is slow,and the development of original cracks and regeneratedcracks with different scales is relatively stable. As the loadcontinues to increase, the b value of acoustic emission beginsto decrease and reaches the minimum value at the peak

stress. In this process, the proportion of AE major eventskeeps increasing, the internal cracks of the sample acceleratethe expansion, and the number of large-size cracks graduallyincreases, and finally, the failure occurs.

As seen Figure 13(a), the maximum value of the b valueis 0.44, the b value of acoustic emission drops sharply at 79%σc, and then, the rate of decline is 3:65 × 10−3 s−1. As seenFigure 13(d), the maximum value of the b value is 0.28,which begins to decrease at 59.3% σc, but the reduction rateis 9:46 × 10−4 s−1. The above phenomenon is mainly due tothe insufficient development of deformation and damage inthe specimen under a small confining pressure, which shows

the characteristics of brittle failure. Therefore, during thedeformation and failure process, the b value is larger, andthe b value will drop suddenly and decrease rapidly. In thecase of a large confining pressure, due to the restraint of con-fining pressure and high stress level, the cracks of the speci-men are fully developed and exhibit well ductility during thedeformation and failure process. At this time, the b value issmall, the decrease time of b value is early, and the rate ofdecrease is slower.

5.2. Damage Model of Granite under Triaxial Stress. Fromthe above study, it is clear that acoustic emission parameterscan qualitatively characterize the damage and failure of mate-rials to a certain extent [47, 48]. The probability-densityfunction f ðVÞ was introduced into this paper [2] to establishthe relationship between acoustic emission events and corre-sponding stress level quantitatively, as shown:

where V is the stress levels; it can be obtained by dividingthe stress at a certain moment by the strength of the granitespecimen under the corresponding confining pressure, N isthe number of cumulative events, and N0 is the number oftotal cumulative events. Based on equation (11), the conventional triaxial com-pression test data of the sample were fitted, and the fittingresults are shown in Figure 14.

As can be seen from Table 1, the correlation coefficientR2 of the fitting results is distributed between 0.966 and

0.992, all of which are greater than 0.950. It indicates thatthe stress levels V and the number of cumulative events Nunder different confining pressures have a good logarithmicrelationship, and the values of a, c, and q of equation (11)under different confining pressures were obtained throughfitting. We substitute (11) into formula (10), through integraloperation, as shown:

It can be seen from Figure 16 and formula (15) thatthere was a positively proportional linear relationshipbetween D and the cubic polynomial in V ; the correlationcoefficients obtained by fitting are all greater than 0.99. Ascan be seen from Figure 16, the larger the initial confiningpressure is, the larger the rock damage parameter D isunder the same stress level, which is caused by the rockwhich will appear as a stick-slip phenomenon under thehigh confining pressure. When the stress level is greaterthan 1.1, the damage variable of the specimen at 5MPais greater than that at 10MPa.

6. Conclusion

Conventional triaxial compression tests under different con-fining pressure were carried out in this paper. The followingmain results are obtained through the test results:

(1) The elastic modulus and plastic deformation of thegranite sample are small, and the brittleness charac-teristics are significant when the confining pressureof the sample is low; conversely, the granite samplehas obvious compression hardness and ductile char-acteristics. The peak stress and strain of the granite

specimen increase linearly with the increase of theconfining pressure of the sample. According to theMohr-Coulomb strength criterion, the cohesion ofthe granite sample is 29.37MPa and the internal fric-tion angle is 54.23°

(2) The crack initiation (σci) stress and dilatancy stress(σcd) of hard rock were determined based on thelaw of linear energy dissipation, which concludedthat the σci and σcd of granite specimens increasewith the increase of confining pressure. Confiningpressure has a significant promoting effect on theenergy storage capacity of granite samples. At thecrack initiation point and expansion point, the totalenergy and elastic strain energy of the specimenincrease with the increase of the confining pressure,but the dissipated energy is less affected by the con-fining pressure. The value of each energy in the sam-ple increases significantly with the increase of initialconfining pressure at the peak stress. And the higherthe confining pressure is, the faster the energy releaseof the sample is in the failure stage

(3) The ringing counts and cumulative ringing countincrease rapidly to the maximum value near the peakstress while the confining pressure is small, and thespecimen suddenly fails in a very short time. Con-versely, when the ringing counts and cumulative ringcounts increase more smoothly, the acoustic emis-sion signal becomes active at the expansion pointand the deformation damage of the sample is fullydeveloped. Before the crack initiation point, AE sig-nals are mainly low-energy and low-frequencyfriction-type AE events, while after the dilatationpoint, AE signals of samples are mainly high-

frequency and high-energy fracture-type AE events,and the acoustic emission signal has greater energywhen the confining pressure is larger

(4) Typical tensile failure fracture occurs in granite sam-ples under the low confining pressure, and tension-shear composite failure or typical shear failure isfound in granite samples under high confining pres-sure, which is consistent with the failure mode ofgranite samples judged by acoustic emission param-eters according to the distribution of characteristicvalues of AE parameters RA and AF. In the case ofa low confining pressure, the acoustic emission bvalue of the granite sample is large, there will be asudden drop, the decrease time is late, and thedecrease rate is large. Under the same stress level,the larger the initial confining pressure is, the largerthe damage variable D is
