Mathematics has had a long tradition at theUniversity of Ljubljana. Ever since its founding in1919, the university has been offering study pro-grams in mathematics, following the high qualitystandards set by the existing study programsabroad. Nowadays, the mathematical studies atthe Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (FMF) atthe University of Ljubljana boast the highest quali-ty levels. At the establishment of the university in 1919,both a mathematical seminar and an institute forapplied mathematics were founded. The seminarwas meeting at the Faculty of Arts, and the insti-tute was based at the Faculty of Technology. Dr.Josip Plemelj, who had previously held a full pro-fessorship at the University of Czernowitz (present-ly Chernivtsi, Ukraine), was appointed chair of theseminar, while Dr. Rihard Zupančič, who had pre-viously lectured at the Vienna University ofTechnology, took over the direction of the institute.Plemelj and Zupančič also served, respectively, asthe first and the second rector of the University ofLjubljana. In the last few decades preceding World War I,some classical mathematical branches saw anexceptionally rapid development with active andcreative contribution of Slovenian mathematicians. The achievements of Prof. Dr. Josip Plemelj wereparticularly important in the theory of integralequations, potential theory, and function theory, and the acquisition of such a renowned mathe-matician was a good basis for the evolution of theSlovenian mathematical science. In between the World Wars, the mathematiciansof the University of Ljubljana published a numberof papers on algebra and differential geometry. The relatively young branches such as topology, functional analysis and modern algebra that
brought fundamental changes to classical mathe-matics at the beginning of the twentieth centurycame to Ljubljana after World War II.Mathematical studies have always been mostdeeply intertwined with physical studies. At thebeginning, therefore, the Faculty of Arts offeredtwo programs majoring in mathematics, namelymathematics with physics and mathematics withdescriptive geometry. The latter was abolished in1928. Instead, a program in pure mathematicsand a program in applied mathematics were cre-ated.In the academic year 1949/1950, the depart-ments of sciences and mathematics separatedfrom the Faculty of Arts and created the Faculty ofSciences and Mathematics which existed from1949 to 1954. In the academic years1954/1955-1956/1957, the separated depart-ments were reunited as the Faculty of Sciences,Mathematics, and Arts which in the academicyear 1957/1958 ultimately split into the Facultyof Arts and the Faculty of Sciences. The latterexisted from 1957 to 1960.Prior to World War II, the following mathematicalcourses were offered: Fundamental course inmathematics I and II, Differential equations andvariational calculus, The theory of analytical func-tions, Algebra with number theory, Differentialgeometry, Algebraic geometry, and A critical intro-duction to infinitesimal calculus. The curriculumdid not vary much from World War II until the year1959.In 1960, mathematical studies underwent consid-erable changes when the Faculty of Sciences andthe Faculty of Mining, Metallurgy, and ChemicalTechnology merged into the Faculty of Sciencesand Technology (FNT). Then, mathematical stud-ies were divided into two two-year programs; the

Program in mathematics with physics and theProgram in technical mathematics. In 1960, theuniversity founded the Institute of Mathematics,Physics, and Mechanics (IMFM) which has sincebeen giving to Slovenian mathematicians as wellas physicists the possibility of scientific engage-ment. In the years 1994-1995, the University ofLjubljana was restructured, and that led to a split-ting of the departments within the FNT. The math-ematics and physics departments formed thepresent Faculty of Mathematics and Physics(FMF). Officially, the activities of the FMF startedon 1st October 1995.During the second half of the twentieth century, mathematics enjoyed tremendous growth result-ing in creation of new branches and high-level spe-cialization of the existing ones. Accordingly, thosedevelopments reflect on the variety of researchactivities of Slovenian mathematicians. The stu-dents will be able to get acquainted with this vari-ety when they opt for elective courses offeredwithin our second cycle study programs, newlydesigned to implement the principles of theBologna declaration.
