Bonus: be there at 9 pm for a flashback to the 90s when the Open House first began!

The Raymond James Stutz Artists Open House serves as the sole fund raiser for the Stutz Residency Program. Since 1996, this program has granted free studio space and utilities for a year to local emerging artists. After spending a formative year as a Stutz resident, these amazing artists have gone on to be some of the most accomplished artists in Indianapolis and beyond. Over the years, the Stutz Artists Association has provided 31 individuals with studio space and the mentorship of other Stutz artists.

The 2017-18 Stutz Residents are Shelby Alexander (B255a) and Rebecca Zink (B255b). Please visit their studios on the 2nd floor and see the art they have been working on during this Residency year.

Applications for the 2018-19 Stutz Residency are now being accepted. Information and applications may be found at www.stutzartists.com/residency and are due June 15. New residents will begin their residencies on September 1.

What is now known as the Stutz Business and Arts Center is one of the most significant buildings in Indianapolis automotive history. It was saved from the wrecking ball in the early 1990s and reborn as a thriving art community and business space.

The story began in the golden age of automobiles when Harry C. Stutz, who was a successful engineer for early automakers, desired to design and build complete cars. Hearing about a 500-mile race that would be an excellent opportunity to showcase a car of his own, he completed his first automobile in just five weeks to enter it in what would be the inaugural running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. The Stutz Bearcat became so popular that the initial plant at 10th and Capitol had to be expanded twice to fill the entire city block.

Stutz automobiles were built for speed, safety and handling and ranged in price from $2,000 to $8,000 ($28,500 to $114,000 today). By late 1929, the Great Depression took hold and the Stutz Motor Company was unable to survive with the last car produced in 1934.

Initially the entire Stutz complex was offered for sale. With no buyers, it was parceled out to L.S. Ayres and Eli Lilly & Company. Lilly purchased Ayres’ part and operated Creative Packaging until 1981. After that, the Stutz became home to the Downtown Indianapolis Industrial Mall where it offered shared services to businesses. By the late 1980s the DIIM was struggling and by 1992 the buildings were being considered for demolition.

Reid Williamson, then-president of Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, invited board member and entrepreneur Turner Woodard to walk through the building. Knowing Woodard’s passion for cars and history, Williamson knew he’d be intrigued. Woodard says, “And I was. But it wasn’t just the long vacant Stutz Building’s legacy that got my attention; it was also its potential. Wandering the cavernous structure, I saw a place where art and commerce could meet.”

In the fall of 1992 Woodard purchased and began renovating the complex, paying homage to the factory’s glory days in his vision for the future. Named the Stutz Business Center, the former factory was divided into spaces for small to medium size

businesses and artists to thrive in a one-of-a-kind downtown space.

A big part of the unique atmosphere is the large number of artist tenants. The first open house occurred just months after Woodard purchased the factory. Artists in the complex “bought plastic kiddie pools, filled them with ice and beer and threw open studio doors,” recalls artist Constance Edwards Scopelitis who has rented a studio at the Stutz for 25 years. Four hundred people came through that first night and attendance tripled by the next year.

Now more than 80 artists work in their studios and represent one of the most varied and accomplished artist communities in Indiana. The nonprofit Stutz Artists Association has hosted the annual Open House for the past 25 years as a way to raise funds for the Stutz Residency program for emerging artists and showcase the art created by Stutz artists. Now thousands of guests visit Stutz artists for the Raymond James Stutz Artists Open House, a holiday open house and other open studio nights.

STUTZ ARTISTS ASSOCIATION The Stutz Artists Association engages the Central Indiana community through opportunities that support local art and artists. This nonprofit, volunteer organization is made up of artists working in the historic Stutz Business and Arts Center who comprise one of the most varied and accomplished artist communities in Central Indiana. The annual Raymond James Stutz Artists Open House provides funding for the Stutz Residency Program to support emerging artists.
