ChristmasTREEs IN 2D!

For just over 11 months of the year your living room is just a

living room, right? You organise the furniture to fit the room and make it functional for everyday living. Having recently redecorated the living room in our home and it has just dawned on me that due to new furniture and it’s arrangement I’m not entirely sure where the 6ft Alpine Christmas tree is going to fit. This poses a problem, yet all is not loss as I’ve found the perfect

solution to this or indeed for anybody else who doesn’t have the space to dedicated 4 square feet in the main living area to a tree for just a few weeks of the year –

the answer is ... ...2D Christmas trees!Simply stick them onto a wall and hey presto! Father Christmas (when he visits) can arrange the presents around the wall and effectively under the tree! Of course you don’t have to use these in place of a real tree you could use them to decorate the rest of the house. The Shoponyourdoorstep.com one comes with stickers to decorate perfect for the children to play with, redecorating to their hearts content!

Harlequin London is the UK’s comprehensive source of luxury tableware, decorative accessories

and lighting. The leading supplier to the luxury interior industry of 120 prestigious brands such as Christofle, Hermes, Bernardaud and Baccarat, the company has an extensive showroom in Chelsea. Harlequin London’s knowledgeable and experienced team are able to advise interior designers and homeowners alike in choosing the perfect finishing touches for their schemes. With fifteen years’ experience in the industry, Harlequin London are experts in helping conceive and source all the smaller elements necessary to create a truly magnificent interiors scheme. Here, managing director Jamie Horton offers his top tips on choosing tableware and decorative lighting…

Top tips on tableware

Keep centrepieces and floral displays either low so that diners can see each other over them, or tall and thin so they can see through – always be conscious that your guests do want to able to see each other!

When choosing candles, pick either very low tealights or very tall candlesticks.

Table linen is essential, but merely folding the linens gives a hurried, unfinished look. If you don’t have napkin rings, use ribbons, cut to the same lengths, to tie up the napkins and secure with a neat bow.

Page 13: Stylista Homes Dec 13/Jan 14

STYLISTA 13

So that everyone can be served promptly and so that serving pieces such as salad bowls and sauce boats are not too big or unwieldy, we always suggest that you have one serving piece per six persons when buying your dinner service.

Double up medium-size plates as these can be used for starter and dessert. The same applies to dessert

knives and forks.

Champagne flutes do not have to match the wine glasses as these are generally used before dinner, so you can be as adventurous as you like!

Decanters and water pitchers are a great way to add to the decoration of a table.

Don’t forget place-setting displays and name cards – these offer another great opportunity to create drama when people first arrive at the table.

Top tips on lightingChoose from the heart. When choosing a decorative piece it should be something that you love, that will make a statement and bring some of your personality to a room.

Layer it up. You should never rely on just one piece to light up the whole room. Layering lighting is key to creating different moods within a room so that it can serve different purposes depending on the time of day and the activities taking place within it.

Page 14: Stylista Homes Dec 13/Jan 14

14 STYLISTA

And on that note... don’t forget lamps. A statement table or floor lamp is a great way of adding flattering and ambient lighting to the space. These will instantly add warmth to a scheme, as well as decorative interest.

Pay attention to finishes. Copper, nickel-plated and silver-plated finishes all reflect light differently and add different impact to a scheme

Take care with positioning. The position and height of your lights is crucial to creating the right look. For example, a chandelier should be about 30 inches above your dining table so that it is not a threat to taller guests (!), and you must mount sconces above eye level so that the lamp source is not visible.

Go for colour! Subtle flannel grey is always stylish, will never be out of fashion and will make a room look exceptionally elegant. Colourful single pendants suspended at different levels are also great for making a scheme fun and interesting.

Be mindful of trends. Like fashion, lighting styles cycle through trends every few years or so. Because lighting is like jewellery for the home, sometimes just one new piece can make a world of difference.

Don’t forget candles! If you’re working to a budget, candles, candelabras and lanterns are perfect ways to introduce soft, ambient lighting. Candlelight will always provide a warm inviting look and evoke feelings of hospitality and a place to rest.

Harlequin London was established in 1998 by former Army Officer Jamie Horton. The company has a stunning 4,500 sq ft showroom, just off the Kings Road, displaying many of its collections.

Customers are welcome to borrow items to see how they would look ‘in situ’ – enabling them to visualise the finished result easily.

Top TipslOOkING AFTER

INDOOR plANTs AT CHRIsTMAs

Kenneth Freeman, Head of Innovation, Ambius provides his top tips for caring for you plants over

the Christmas period.

Christmas is coming, and that brings a number of challenges to people looking after indoor plants – whether they are professional interior landscapers or keen home gardeners.

Poinsettia PointersPoinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are among the most commonly used seasonal plants. You will often find them forming part of Christmas seasonal displays and for sale at every garden centre and supermarket from mid-November onwards. As well as the traditional bright red varieties, new types in deep red (almost maroon), cream, pink and white are also available. Unfortunately, poinsettias have a reputation as being short-lived and difficult to maintain, even over the relatively short period that they are in our homes or offices.

Here are ten tips that we can share that will help them to look good for longer.

Poinsettias are not deadly toxic to people, children or animals (although the sap can be irritating)

Poinsettias MUST BE unwrapped from their sleeves as soon as you get them indoors.

Keep warm. Poinsettias originate from the warm climate of Mexico and central America, and don’t like sitting in cold vehicles, cold buildings or watered with cold water. It substantially reduces their life span. Poinsettias will do better in warmer, draught free locations. NEVER place them near cold draughts or outside doorways.

Red poinsettias often look poor under fluorescent lighting. Incandescent or halogen lighting makes them look their best.

Page 32: Stylista Homes Dec 13/Jan 14

32 STYLISTA

White or pink poinsettias will look better for longer display periods (over three weeks). Red ones tend to fade in colour if in low light for over three weeks.

Many of today’s modern poinsettias were bred to have flexible bracts (the coloured leaves around the rather insignificant flowers); thus they tend to weep a little. This is natural. On some, the foliage has the same appearance.

Whilst they can consume a lot of water, poinsettias should never be allowed to stand in water.

Whilst wilted poinsettias may have their life span reduced, soaking the root ball with warm water will often cause severely wilted poinsettias to revive. Revival should occur within one hour, so don’t chuck out your plants until you have tried this.

Poinsettia quality varies WIDELY from grower to grower, and year to year. You often get what you pay for.

… And finally, the answer is no, white poinsettias don’t turn pink then finally “ripen” to red.

WHAT AbOuT AlTERNATIVEs TO

pOINsETTIAs?

If poinsettias don’t get your horticultural juices flowing, there are some good alternative seasonal plants to consider. Here

are a couple to think about.

One plant that you might consider is the Hippeastrum, often erroneously called Amaryllis (which is a related species, but not the one you’ll commonly find). It is a bulbous plant (grown from a large, onion-shaped bulb) that is often in flower at this time of year. Available in a wide variety of colours and flower forms, this impressive and spectacular plant is easy to care for.

The word cactus conjures up images of the spiky, desert plants seen in cowboy films. However, the cactus family is quite diverse, and one member of this group is the Christmas cactus - species and hybrids in the Schlumbergera genus. These plants, originally from the cloud forests of Brazil (where they grow in tree tops at altitudes between 1,000 and 1,700 metres above sea level) are also very easy to look after. They can be induced to produce flower buds by keeping them relatively cool (10°C – 15°C / 50°F – 60°F) for six to eight weeks. Some examples of this species are known to be over 100 years old and they can get very big indeed. A related species, Rhipsalis gaertneri,

is known as the Easter Cactus and usually flowers during the spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

Tips for indoor plants in the winter

If your offices are shutting down over Christmas, or if you are going away on holiday, spare a thought for your indoor plants.

Most indoor plants are a lot more robust than you think, and can manage quite well for a week or two without much thought, but there are some things you can do to ensure that you won’t come back to a collection of dead sticks and fallen leaves.

If the lights are going to be turned off, turn down the temperature a little as well, otherwise the balance light temperature and water will be lost and your plants might suffer.

But don’t turn the thermostat too low – some succulents really can’t cope with temperatures below about 10 °C – Crassulas (money plants) can collapse and fall apart (although they can re-grow, very slowly) and Sansevieria (Mother-in-law’s tongue) will go mushy and smelly. Orchids and poinsettias will also be unhappy if they get chilled.

Don’t be tempted to over-water the plants “just to be on the safe side”. If it is cool, or darker than usual, the plants can’t make use of the excess, and you might damage the roots and the soil structure. If you have an irrigation system installed (office plants usually do), then your plants will manage perfectly well for two or three weeks without worry.

Baubles, lights, silly string and fake snow are best reserved for Christmas trees. As well as looking a little undignified on your nice specimen tropical plant, you could end up damaging the foliage.

Having said that, why not decorate the soil surface with a seasonal top dressing – pine cones or even coloured baubles might look pretty and festive without risking any damage to the plants.

A well-ordered island unit positioned near the window comes available with a variety of drawer sizes,

meaning you’ll be able to store all manner of items away securely and discreetly. The ample space within the handcrafted cabinetry is supplemented by other storage

options in the room, including open storage for shoes and handbags with a bespoke wardrobe ladder - a quirky touch that complements the style and mood of the room.

Every design is unique and customised to a specific brief, which means that Neville Johnson can work with tricky architectural features such as sloping ceilings, doorways or awkwardly shaped rooms to create a professional finish that utilises every inch of space.

Prices start from £3,000 nevillejohnson.co.uk
