INTRODUCTIONThe SU-16 is a semi-automatic rifle chamberedfor the 5.56mm NATO (.223 Remington)cartridge. The SU-16 rifle will accept moststandard M-16 type magazines. The forendcan be unfolded to form a bi-pod for moreaccurate shooting.

The SU-16A model stock has storage spacefor two 10 round Kel-Tec magazines or one 20or 30 round magazine. By rotating the stockdown and forward, the SU-16A rifle can bereduced to a size of 27x7.5 inches(680x190mm) to facilitate storage.

The SU-16B contains the same features as theSU-16A in addition to a lightweight barrel andaluminum front and rear sights (M-16 stylefront post).

The SU-16C features a 16 inch heavy barrelwith a 1/2-28 inch thread on the front of themuzzle to accept standard attachments such

as a muzzle brake. With the rifle unloaded, chamber clear, and safety on, simply unscrewthe knurled thread protector to expose thethread. Apply no more than 20 ft-lbs of torqueto these threads. The SU-16C also features atrue folding stock that can be fired while thestock is folded. The M-16 style front sight ofthe SU-16C model is integrated into the gasblock. The SU-16C contains a MIL-STD-1913picatinny rail and features a dustcover as wellas a case deflecting operating handle. TheSU-16C can not store magazines within thestock and does not contain a rubber butt pad.

The SU-16CA model is a combination of the SU-16C heavy barrel and receiver and the SU-16Astock assembly .

CONSTRUCTIONThe receiver, stock, and forend are made of animpact resistant glass reinforced Zytel. The

receiver has an aluminum insert molded into thefront to accept the barrel and the serialnumber.

The stock houses the firing mechanism andhas storage for two 10 round magazines (withexception of SU-16C). It is ended with a softrubber butt plate.

The firing mechanism is of conventional singleaction type. It has a push bolt safety thatblocks the trigger.

FunctioningAt the start of this cycle the weapon isassumed already loaded, full magazineinserted, hammer cocked, the safety disen-gaged and ready to fire.

When The SU-16 rifle’s trigger is pulled, thetrigger block rotates, lifting up the rear of thesear. This causes the sear to rotate on its axis, disengaging the sear from the hammer. Thehammer rotates forward to strike the firing pin, which in turn hits the cartridge primer ignitingthe powder charge.

Page 5: SU-16 RIFLE...The SU-16 is a semi-automatic rifle chambered for the 5.56mm NATO (.223 Remington) cartridge. The SU-16 rifle will accept most standard M-16 type magazines. The forend

moving once the round is fully inserted into thechamber, but the bolt carrier continues to moveforward until it rests on the barrel extension. The cam path and cam pin cause the bolt totwist and lock with the barrel extension.

The hammer is now resting on the sear whichis pushing back onto the rear of the triggerblock. As the trigger is released the triggerblock rotates, lowering the rear of the triggerblock which allows the sear to move back-wards and rest on the top of the rear of thetrigger block. The SU-16 rifle is now ready forthe next shot.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

The normal storage condition of the SU-16 rifleis unloaded with the stock folded underneaththe barrel.

Folding and unfolding the SU-16A/SU-16B/SU-16C/SU-16CA rifleTo unfold the rifle, remove the assembly pinfrom its spring locked hole in the receiver. Thestock is simply latched onto the barrel withfriction and can be unfolded by simply pulling itapart from the barrel. Fully extend the stockand line up the assembly pin holes. Press in theassembly pin until it is flush with the outside ofthe stock.

SU-16A/SU-16B SU-16C

The hot expanding powder gases drive thebullet forward through the barrel. After about.0007 seconds the bullet passes the gas portin the barrel and some of the powder gasesenter the gas head and press on the piston. The pressure builds on the piston, whichpushes on the piston rod and the bolt carriercausing the bolt carrier to move backwards, unlocking the bolt from the barrel extension. After the bolt carrier moves about 0.41inches(10.5mm) the bolt is fully unlocked from the

barrel extension and the bolt and empty casecontinue to move backwards with the boltcarrier.

On it’s way backwards, the bolt carrier cocksthe hammer and the empty case ejects. Thebolt carrier is gradually slowed down andstopped by the recoil spring. The recoil springthen drives the bolt carrier forward. The topcartridge in the magazine is picked up by thebolt and pushed into the barrel. The bolt stops

SafetyTo achieve operator safety, combined withease of handling, the SU-16 rifle’s manualsafety, when applied, positively blocks thetrigger from rotating the sear. The safety canbe applied at any time, whether the hammer iscocked or not. Only when the red ring on thesafety is fully obscured is the safety engaged.Obviously the safest condition of the rifle isfolded and unloaded. Also consideringunauthorized operation, other modes of storingor carrying will gradually improve readiness atthe cost of safety.

MalfunctioningProper function of your SU-16 rifle is directlyrelated to maintenance and care, and to theammunition you use. Some of the morecommon types of malfunctions which mayoccur are as follows:

Misfire: A failure to fire or an unusual soundupon firing is always a signal to cease firingand immediately examine the bore of thefirearm. It is not sufficient to just pull theoperating handle back and examine thechamber. You must remove the magazine, clearthe chamber, lock the bolt open and inspect thebore visually - and with a rod if necessary - tobe certain it is completely clear of anyobstruction. Failure to detect and remove abore obstruction can result in serious injury ordeath to the shooter and bystanders, as wellas damage to the firearm.

To fold the rifle, simply press out the assemblypin with a small tool or the tip of a cartridge, fold the stock under the barrel, and replace theassembly pin into the spring locked hole in thereceiver.

Folding and unfolding the SU-16C riflestockIn order to fold the stock of the SU-16C fromthe extended position, look behind the grip andyou will find the stock lock. Pull down withyour thumb and hold to unlock the stock andfold it under the grip. The stock will fold over a20 or 30 round metal magazine (not included).

It will snap onto the forend with a lot of force. To unfold the stock, simply pull down to unsnapthe stock and extend it to lock.

WARNING: Do not get your fingers in theway of the closing or opening stock.Beware of pinch points when opening orclosing the stock.

Extending and folding the bipodTo extend the bipod grip the two locking tabson each side of the forend with your thumband middle finger. Pull them back until the bi-podunlatches and then release the bipod. Rotatethe bipod forward until it is fully extended. Ifonly one half of the bipod opens, squeeze itclosed and try again, being sure to use onlytwo fingers to unlatch the bipod.

To fold up the bipod rotate the bipod back untilthe locking holes are aligned with the lockingtabs. Squeeze the bipod together until bothhalves snap into place. Be careful not to getany part of your hand in between the twohalves when you snap it shut.

the last round has been fired. The SU-16 hasan automatic bolt stop so after the last round isfired the bolt will lock open. Remove the emptymagazine by pressing the magazine catchlocated on the right side of the receiver andpull out the empty magazine. To continueshooting, simply insert a full magazine into themagazine well, firmly push it up until it locks, and pull back and release the operating handleto release the bolt stop and feed the nextround. The rifle is now ready to fire.

UnloadingTo unload the SU-16 rifle, engage the safety, push in the magazine catch, remove themagazine, and pull the operating handle fullyback to eject the round in the chamber. Do notobstruct the ejector port and keep fingersaway from trigger and muzzle. With theoperating handle fully pulled back, push up onthe bolt stop and slowly release the operatinghandle. The bolt should stay open. Visually

inspect the chamber to make sure it is empty.Pull back on the operating handle to release thebolt stop and release the operating handle toclose the chamber. Push the remainingcartridges in the magazine forward and out.

LoadingTo load, fill the magazine by pressing acartridge downward on the magazine follower(or downward on the previously loadedcartridge). Continue loading until you haveloaded the number of cartridges you wish toload, up to the magazine capacity of 10rounds. Do not attempt to load your magazinewith more than the specified number ofrounds. Doing so can damage the magazineand can cause a feeding malfunction. Beforeinserting a loaded magazine always tap theback of the magazine against a hard surfacetwo or three times in order to properly seat allthe cartridges to the rear of the magazine.

With the rifle’s safety engaged, hold the rifle inone hand with the muzzle pointing in a safedirection and with your finger off the triggerand outside the trigger guard. Insert theloaded magazine into the grip until it is locked in

WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RE-MOVE A LODGED BULLET OR ANYOTHER OBSTRUCTION BY USING ABLANK CARTRIDGE, OR A CARTRIDGEWITH THE BULLET REMOVED, OR BYANY MEANS OTHER THAN THE USE OFTHE PROPER SIZE CLEANING ROD(WITHOUT A TIP OR BRUSH) ANDREASONABLE FORCE APPLIED TO THEROD. BE CERTAIN ALL LOOSE POWDERHAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BOREAND ACTION BEFORE INTRODUCING THEROD INTO THE BORE.

Failure to Feed: This occurs when acartridge has been fed from a magazine butnot fully chambered. If this occurs, keep thefirearm pointed in a safe direction, remove thatcartridge, operate the bolt manually andcontinue shooting. If necessary, change themagazine. The most common causes are dirt orforeign objects impeding the magazinefollower. Improperly crimped cartridges areanother cause.

Failure to Eject or Extract: A fired case is notfully extracted from the chamber or ejectedfrom the rifle. Again, keep the firearm pointed ina safe direction, clear the gun by operating thebolt, remove the case and continue. Ifnecessary, change the magazine. The mostcommon causes are a damaged extractor, ejector or ammunition. Improperly loaded orsized cartridges can cause this also. If any ofthe above problems are not solved by cleaningor by use of other brands of ammunition, stopfiring, unload and return the SU-16 rifle to ourservice department.

FiringWith the muzzle pointed in a safe direction andyour finger outside the trigger guard, take aimat a safe target, disengage the safety andsqueeze the trigger until a round is fired.Release the trigger and you are ready to fireanother round. Upon firing, the bolt movesrearward extracting and ejecting the firedround and returns to the forward positionfeeding another round automatically whiledoing so. This sequence can be repeated until

place. Check to assure that the magazine issecure. Pull the operating handle back andrelease. This strips a round from the magazineand seats it in the barrel chamber. If you wish to restore the magazine in your rifleto full capacity, press the magazine catch andremove the magazine to load the missinground. Remember to keep the safety engagedand your rifle pointed in a safe direction underall conditions and always keep your finger offthe trigger and outside the trigger guard untilready to fire.

DISASSEMBLYNOTE: Disassembly can be performedwith only a cartridge but a few simpletools such as a small punch and smallpliers can make things much easier. APhillips head screw driver is not neces-sary for general maintenance and noneof the screws on the rifle should everneed to be removed for general mainte-nance.Rifle disassemblyUnload your SU-16 rifle and cycle the operatinghandle to be sure that there is no round in the

chamber. Make sure the bolt is in the forwardposition and the safety is engaged.

CAUTION: Some accessories that aremounted to the picatinny rail on the topof the receiver may interfere with thedisassembly of the SU-16 rifle. It isadvisable to remove any scopes or otherdevices mounted to the rail beforeproceeding with disassembly. With a cartridge or other pointed object pushout and remove the assembly pin. Fold thestock down and forward and press it onto thebarrel. Unlatch the bipod. Grip the recoil springtube, pull it towards the muzzle and twist it 1/4

correctly with the screw head on theinside of the receiver. The rear of thedustcover should be flush with the backof the bolt carrier. Align the operating handlehole in the carrier with the cut-out in thereceiver and insert the operating handle. Pushthe carrier up slightly so that the operatinghandle aligns with the slot for it and the recoilspring tube is parallel with the barrel of therifle.

WARNING: If the recoil spring tube is notparallel with the barrel of the rifle thebolt carrier assembly is not installedcorrectly. Remove the carrier assemblyand install it again paying close attentionto the alignment of the lock tab on therecoil spring tube as you insert thecarrier and also be sure that the boltitself is always in the forward mostposition as you insert the carrierassembly into the receiver.

Check that the forend lock ring is alignedcorrectly and push the operating handle all theway forward, be sure that the piston headlines up and goes into the gas head. Grip therecoil spring tube, pull it forward, and twist 1/4turn so that the locking tab on the recoil springtube goes into the receptacle on the left side ofthe receiver. Pull the operating handle back andforth to check that it moves freely. If it does nottake out the bolt carrier and check to makesure everything is installed correctly andnothing is damaged. Close the bipod andunfold the stock. Insert the assembly pin intothe hole and press it in until it is flush with theoutside of the stock.

Changing the safety operation direction:

The safety button on the SU-16 rifle can bereversed so that the safety can be engaged byeither pressing on the right side, or the left sideof the safety button, depending on yourpreferences. You will need a few tools to flip

towards the top of the bolt carrier. Check theoperation of the recoil spring by lightly pullingon the recoil spring tube to compress thespring. To install the bolt, cam pin, firing pin, and firingpin pin, insert the bolt into the front of the boltcarrier.

NOTE: For the SU-16C and the SU-16CA,the dustcover should be slid on from thefront of the carrier before the bolt isinserted.

Twist the bolt so that the extractor is on theright side of the carrier and the cam pin hole inthe bolt lines up with the cam pin slot in the boltcarrier. Insert the cam pin into the hole in thebolt, be sure that the tab on the cam pin ispointing straight out the left side of the boltcarrier. Push the bolt assembly into the carrieras far as it will go and then insert the firing pininto the back of the bolt carrier, being sure thehalf moon shaped cut is facing up. If it does notgo in all the way, the cam pin or the bolt may

not be inserted correctly. Insert the firing pinpin into the bolt carrier from the left side. DONOT FORCE THE FIRING PIN PIN. If it does notgo in easily, check that the firing pin is installedcorrectly. Check the operation of the bolt andfiring pin to be sure that they move freely.

Rifle assemblyWith the rifle stock folded and the bipodunlatched, rest the rifle on its left side. Take thebolt carrier assembly, pull the bolt out as far asit will go, and twist the recoil spring tube sothat the lock tab is at the top of the bolt carrier.Insert the carrier from the rear of the receiver,be sure not to twist the bolt tube or push in thebolt as you insert it. stock halves at the back of the base of thetrigger guard. You may need another pryingtool to help enlarge the gap. Put your paper cliphook into the gap you just pried open. Startfrom the butt end and move the hook towardsthe trigger, you should be able to hook onto theback of the trigger spring. Lift up on your toolto raise the trigger spring. While holding thespring up, push out the safety, flip it around, and put it back. Release the pressure on thetrigger spring and remove the paper clip hook.Check to be sure that the safety moves backand forth correctly. Remove the pry tool fromthe trigger guard. Tighten all the screws thatyou loosened on both sides of the stock.Check the operation of the safety beforeloading the rifle.

SIGHT ADJUSTMENT SU-16ASight adjustment on the SU-16A rifle dependson the placement of the rear sight. If the sightis placed farthest forward on the picatinny rail,

the rifle will have a different sight radius than ifthe sight is placed farthest rearward on thepicatinny rail. The data below is given forwhen the rear sight is placed on the farthestrearward slot on the picatinny rail. The rearsight of the SU-16A can be removed bypushing out the cross bar in the sight with asmall punch or similar tool. With the cross barout, the sight can be slid forward or off of therail. Reinstall the cross bar to lock the sight inposition. The rear sight of the SU-16B/SU-16C/SU-16CA can be removed by fully unscrewingone of the screws on the side of the sight.

Before making any adjustment, always loosenthe metal screw first. Reverse the Phillips headbit in the included tool and use the hex end toloosen one plastic screw and then tighten theother in 1/8 to 1/4 turn increments. Always endby tightening the right side screw in order toavoid sight blade rotation. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN THE CLEAR PLASTIC SCREWS, thehex strips easily. 1/4 of a turn changes thepoint of impact 1.3" at 100 yards or 1.3 m.o.a. .One full turn is 5.2 m.o.a. By turning the leftscrew clockwise (in) the sight moves to theright and the point of impact to the left.

Before tightening the screws, the post may bepushed up or down to adjust elevation. .007"will change the impact 1 m.o.a. When you arefinished adjusting the sight, lock the blade bytightening the metal screw.

the safety button, including a Philips headscrew driver, a small flat head screw driver, orother thin tool for prying, and a small paper clip.Bend the paper clip out so that it has a smallhook on one end and a handle shape on theother as shown in the figure.

Unload your SU-16 rifle and cycle the operatinghandle to be sure that there is no round in thechamber. Make sure the bolt is in the forwardposition and the safety is engaged. Put the rifleon one of its sides and loosen the four screwson the stock that are closest to the muzzle endof the rifle as shown in the figure. Do notloosen screws that are screwed into thereceiver. Flip the rifle over and loosen the fourscrews that were in the same position as theprevious four you just loosened. Hold the rifleso that it is upside down and resting on it’s top.You may need to remove the sight and anyother accessories that are mounted to thepicatinny rail. Push your small screwdriver orprying tool into the gap in the bottom rear of thetrigger guard so that there is enough of a gapto get your paper clip tool in between the two

chamber, extractor, and adjacent areas whichhave been subjected to the action of powderor primer residue. Remove any residue on theframe with light brushing and a solvent. Aftercleaning the entire gun, use a cloth to apply alight coating of high quality gun oil to all externalsurfaces and wipe clean.

Additional cleaning, after firing 500rounds:Remove the bolt carrier assembly and fullydisassemble it as stated in the disassemblysection of this manual. Thoroughly clean, withsolvent and a brush, the piston head, pistonpin, piston rod, recoil spring, recoil spring tube, bolt, cam pin, firing pin, and bolt carrier. Do notclean the firing pin pin, solvents can damagethe O-ring used to hold it in place. Thoroughlydry all parts. Apply a light coat of oil to the firingpin, bolt, cam pin, and the surfaces in the boltcarrier where the bolt, cam pin, and firing pinslide. Apply a light coat of oil on the piston rodand assemble the bolt carrier assembly andrifle as stated in the assembly part of thismanual. Manually cycle the bolt back and forthto check the function of the rifle. If any partsare damaged or badly worn or the rifle doesnot work correctly, the rifle should not be firedand should be returned to Kel-Tec for servicingimmediately.

LUBRICATION WARNING:Firing a rifle with oil, grease, or anyother material even partially obstructingthe bore may damage the rifle and injurethe shooter and those nearby.Do not spray or apply lubricants directlyon ammunition. If the powder charge ofa cartridge is affected by the lubricant, itmay not be ignited, but the energy fromthe primer may be sufficient to push thebullet into the bore where it maybecome lodged. Firing a subsequentbullet into the obstructed bore willdamage the rifle and may injure theshooter and bystanders. Use lubricantsproperly. You are responsible for theproper care and maintenance of yourfirearm.

WARNING: It is not recommended thatyou disassemble the stock of the SU-16rifle; the hammer spring is constantlyunder tension and can easily injure youor others. If the need arises to lubricatethe trigger assembly do so through theaccess slot behind and in front of thehammer.

SIGHT ADJUSTMENT SU-16B/SU-16C/SU-16CASight adjustment on the SU-16B/SU-16C/SU-16CA rifle depends on the placement of therear sight. If the sight is in the farthest forwardslot on the picatinny rail the rifle will have adifferent sight radius than if the sight is placedfarthest rearward on the picatinny rail. Thedata given is for the sight in the rearmostposition.

Use the included Phillips driver to adjust thewindage with the two screws on the sides ofthe rear sight. Tighten the screw on the sameside of the rear sight that you want to movethe point of impact to. You may have to loosenthe opposite side screw a little. For example: to move the point of impact left 1inch at 100 yards you would loosen (counter-clockwise) the right screw 1/8 turn and tighten(clockwise) the left screw 1/8 turn. For the front sight, use a small tipped tool, like apaper clip or an M-16 A2 style front sight tool(not included) to depress the detent pin andturn the sight post by hand. One click (1/4 turn)will change the point of impact 1.2inches at100 yards on the SU-16B; and 1.6inches at

100 yards on the SU-16C and SU-16CA.Clockwise (in) moves the point of impact upand counter-clockwise (out) moves it down.
